What have been your "grief" stages of being made redundant?

If anybody has been following, I was made redundant last week.

At first I was like "great they've made the decision for me" which is still true. About a few weeks before I came to the conclusion that they'd never invest in me, and I would never gain the experience needed for my next role. I also concluded that I thrive at much bigger companies.

Yesterday I was angry because I felt used. I basically came in, delivered what they wanted and now they're kicking me out. It would have worked a lot better if they had just given me a "consultancy/fractional" role.

Today, well the self doubt is starting to creep in. Mostly because I'm sure I did something wrong, but it's impossible to know what, so I cannot grow much more from this experience beyond knowing what I DON'T want in my next job.

AIBU to have been feeling this way?

That's surely subjective? I don't think there's anything about lack of self-respect to ask if I can keep the phone (as potentially the laptop, but I hate it so I genuinely don't know why I would).

You’ve nothing to lose by asking for the laptop and phone but I suspect they’ll say no as they’ll want to ensure they’re fully wiped of all company data and often they’re leased.

I think you're getting a hard time re the phone / laptop.

At my place this request is not unusual and accommodated if it can be (depending on age and how many times it's been round the block etc).

Once you get to a Head of role, I think it's easier for businesses to 'let go' (but call it redundancy) when it's just not working out. You said in an earlier post that you were only going to stick around to make up time for your CV, so there's something that wasn't working out from your end at least.

Rightly, your ego is bruised, but they've come to the same conclusion as you already had done, so they've not really done anything wrong.

I'd stretch out my leaving date too. You've got the summer off.

Try to shake off this feeling. Tell your DH to stop saying demoralising crap (if he is).

What I'm trying to do right now is to drag things as much as possible to get another month's salary, and keep the company phone/laptop

But I'm also thinking that I might make my life more miserable and it might not be worthwhile for the sake if the extra pay/gadgets.

Sorry but this sounds like veering on CF thinking.
Don't stoop low.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply!
Both the phone and laptop have had previous owners, so they're not new by any stretch of the imagination, but the phone is certainly an upgrade to mine (I was thinking of changing it around August).

I'm with you, that they figured out that something just didn't work out on their end. I'd like to know what it was, but I'll never know.

For me it became clear that they'd never invest in my development, and that I'd never learn/be exposed to the things I needed in order to progress in my career.

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't awful, I think it was perfectly passable, but not for a long term career.

You Op, You “didn’t work out on their end”

and the way you intend to approach your departure will confirm to them that Damn… they made the right decision!!

How exactly? It's not uncommon (apart from here on MN) to ask to keep the devices.

When we’re talking about someone being kicked out a few weeks after probation? Giving them a mobile and laptop? If you say so OP

when are you going to ask?

During the last meeting (if I decide to). Again they didn't have to pass my probation they simply could have extended it.
