My kids nanny has warts!

So we just got a new babysitter and I noticed that she has some warts on her hands. I don’t want my kids to get warts as they are hard to get rid of. I think I’m going to get a new babysitter. Aibu?

I’m 24. I just get grossed out easily.

Good luck with the nits and worms stage.

Get a new babysitter? I wouldn't work for someone who thought I was gross.

I had a wart on my knee as young teen, tried everything to get rid of it but nothing worked. Then one day Irealised it had gone. I played with it and picked at it loads but it didn’t spread and I never got any on my hands.

DS had a knee wart. It was huge and ended up being the size of a pea!

DH insisted on going through this whole rigmarole of getting a piece of raw meat, rubbing it on the wart then DS had to go and bury it somewhere in the garden and to keep the place secret.I could scarcely contain my derision and scorn.

The wart was gone in just over a week, you could almost see it shrinking before your eyes!

Sorry OP, that doesn't help your dilemma over your babysitter.

Fizbosshoes · 05/05/2025 12:16

I had several warts on my hands in my very early 20s which I hated. I did not know they were contagious and I booked a manicure and the beautician was similarly horrified as the OP, and I've never felt so mortified I my life!

I found a treatment to get rid of then which smelled horrendous but worked well.

Bestfadeplans · 05/05/2025 12:17

I think its beyond rude to call them gross. I'd rather be sacked than confronted about something I have little control over.

JustMyView13 · 05/05/2025 12:17

Clear nail varnish on them stops them spreading. Picking it off is great fun too. That’s how I killed off all of mine.

My younger sister never caught a single one from me. Other than the nail varnish trick, we broke all the rules (shared hand towels, swam together, played together).

I’m not commenting on whether they’ve been back since because I don’t want to jinx it. Read into that as you will.

Edited to state the obvious: Don’t use the clear nail varnish for anything other than the warts. And certainly don’t share it! 😬

My mum gave my 50p for mine (not a bad amount in the mid 70s) - one of her country superstitions was that if someone “bought” the wart from you it would go. Didn’t work though.

I’m having them wear flip flops at the pool and I told them not to touch anyone that has warts.

Oh my god. 🤣

I thought you had to sell it to a gypsy?

The other method that works is to go to three funerals and, as the bells toll, say “Please take my warts with you”.

Maybe it’s time to inform yourself, do some reading, and grow up.

EleanorReally · 05/05/2025 12:22

i dont think they are contagious

why dont you ask her?

Feed her after midnight and see if she reproduces.

Wait, no, that's Gremlins. Sorry!!

Wow, you’re not going to enjoy parenthood at all if this tips you over the edge, just wait for the impetigo, worms and cold sores!

MoominMai · 05/05/2025 12:42

My sister was a primary school teacher and when we all lived at the family home, I had no clue as I regularly go them. Few years living alone, they finally all disappeared.

Then ONE night she stopped over with her kids and DH and not long after they were back! 😭

Notsosure1 · 05/05/2025 12:50

AlertCat · 05/05/2025 10:48

Not far off the sort of bullying I saw at primary school- ugh, don’t touch Kevin, he’s got warts! I don’t want to sit with him/play with him. My mum says I shouldn’t.

it wasn’t warts at my school (or Kevin), but it could have been.

just think about what you’re actually teaching your kids @YourHangryFox

I agree.

I think we know the type of person the OP is - “Don’t play with them Samantha, they’re poor!” She is likely to have been a horrible little bully at school and is teaching her kids to view ppl with undesirable conditions (they didn’t ask for!) as gross. How sensitive and kind you sound.

OP, I hope you get a lot of warts.

I think people.r being a bit harsh. I personally wouldn't want a nany with warts on her hands because I wouldn't want my children to catch them either. They are a co.plete pain to get rid of. Obviously it's a v delicate issue and I feel for the nanny, but I am with you OP

Gloves

seaelephant · 05/05/2025 13:07

Blimey, you'd have thought I was a devil child. My hands were covered in them growing up and I'd wave them in other children's faces when they annoyed me 😂your kids will already have encountered them at school

FloatingSquirrel · 05/05/2025 13:07

HairyGarden · 05/05/2025 12:09

Honestly OP, I am embarrassed for you. You are a grown woman, with a child. Stop speaking (and worse thinking) like some awful caricature of a spoiled teenager.

Really? You think not wanting warts is like a "spoiled teenager"?
It's no different to someone avoiding coldsores. They're unpleasant and contagious and people should be covering warts to reduce the risk of passing them, not just going "oh well, I have them so it doesn't matter if everyone else gets them".
If your friends child had headlice would you leave your child's hair down and let them rub their heads together, or would you tie their hair up and say to not touch heads until it's cleared? It's just common sense.

CleanShirt · 05/05/2025 13:09

This. The mind boggles.

@FloatingSquirrel

No, I think all the “eeeeeew, it’s sooooo gross” whining about an extremely common issue makes her sound like a spoiled teenager.

Can you please direct me to the part of my post where I suggested that it was okay for people to spread them?

TheGreenIsAlwaysGrasser · 05/05/2025 13:30

YANBU. I think it's disingenuous for most people to pretend that they wouldn't care catching this kind of thing, and that we all need to be kind and put ourselves at risk of catching something we don't want.

Same with cold sores. People get SO defensive if you try and avoid people with active cold sores and make sure you never share any drinking cups etc but why WOULDN'T you try and avoid catching them if you can??

Lifelong illness, sometimes really painful, often embarrasing. Same with fungal nail infections. You're doing the right thing for your kids tbh.
