Come on mumsnet, creep my lifestyle!

Inspired by the personal stylist post - I’m wondering what is the best thing you’ve bought for yourself?

Mine has 100% been my peloton and all the dumbbells. First exercise I’ve ever stuck to!

A personal trainer and laser eye surgery

I'm in the best shape of my life (nearly 40) and I can see properly.

I will be getting a multi focal lens that will fix all distances. It is 9100 with a blue light discount down to 8200. Can’t wait!

I’ve tried those as contacts and they ARE lovely but they are tedious in dimmer conditions. Is it the same for your procedure?

@FlakyMum, I got Trans PRK laser eye surgery 8 months ago (I'm 44). I had terrible eyesight with bad astigmatism. Recovery time for this was longer but it was the type of surgery best suited to me. I got it done at Moorfields in London and it cost me just under £5K. Recovery time was approx 2-4 weeks, but my surgeon said that sight will keep improving over a few months. When he saw me 3 months afterwards, he said the sight was better than 20:20. It's brilliant!!

I do love seeing how posters are doing things to look after themselves. So often, we put ourselves at the bottom of the pile (I know I certainly did in my 20's and 30's). :)

Thanks for the info, I've got my consult a week on Tuesday and had a telephone interview the other day; apparently as I wear varifocal glasses I will probably need lens replacement not just laser zapping?! And will need a week off work. Around £6k she said.

Top to toe laser hair removal 🥲

wow, how much did that cost?

LittleArithmetics · 10/05/2025 21:40

I've been having electrolysis for a while on the dreaded chin hairs. It's a work in progress but there's definitely been a great reduction in hair. The best thing is I no longer spend time every morning plucking, and my skin is much better as the plucking was giving me spots and ingrown hairs.

OTOH I had laser eye surgery about 10 years ago and have had dry eyes ever since.

bevm72yellow · 10/05/2025 22:47

A comment about laser surgery to correct vision. Cataracts become very common in the population as they age ( causing decreased or blurry vision). It is a fairly simple surgery procedure to remove a cataract and give life changing vision back. It is much more difficult to remove a cataract when the eye has been lasered therefore satisfactory vision is not guaranteed.

I'm seriously considering this. At the moment I pay £90 every six weeks for a full leg, Brazilian and forearm wax. And to be frank, it's not that great, and I struggle with ingrown hairs etc.

My chin is now getting decidedly fuzzy, so I'm thinking it will be much cheaper long term to get it layered. But I'm fair skinned so not sure it will work?

Mary46 · 11/05/2025 12:04

I was disappointed in laser. Got lip done 6 sessions . It grew back. She said face is hormonal area. Works well for others.

mikado1 · 11/05/2025 12:17

Laser if contrast between skin and hair colour
Electrolysis if hair and skin are fair. Laser won't 'seem fair hair on fair skin, as I understand it. I got 4x lip sessions and it sorted it but then I had my kids so I'll need to do it again. I cut the hair close with a nail scissors - recommended instead of waxing by beautician. Same with chin.

the actual lenses are puresee inr. They get good reviews. I am not sure that the lens replacement lens are equivalent to contact lenses. But I am not sure.

54 is absolutely fine, it’s for people of all ages. It’s costing me around £6k and I believe it’s on lower end because my prescription is relatively straightforward. It all depends on the individual. I’m going with Optical Express as I responded to an ad on Facebook. I didn’t look at others so no comparisons to make but the service has been good so far. (Surgery is later today) I didn’t go through a GP or the NHS at all.

It’s worth getting a free consultation- they examine your eyes thoroughly and check medical history etc. They’re a business so will try to sell but there’s no obligation and you have to be a suitable candidate.

Good luck!

how did your surgery go? I’m booked for July 8th

I'm going with Optical Express too, and electrician i know had his done with them and he said its life changing, you can imagine fiddling with little wires, screws etc. Please let us know how yours goes!!

angieloumc · 11/05/2025 18:12

Mine has been under eye fillers. I have (had) hollows under my eyes and got to the age of 54 and thought I’m really going to have to do something about it.
The first clinic I saw told me I would need a surgical eye lift at £6000! And I wasn’t suitable for tear trough fillers.
The second was an aesthetician who said I was suitable for them and did them for me. It really has been transformative for me, I feel so much more confident in myself and don’t mind seeing myself in the mirror now. I think I look great!
However I am still fat, so have just started Mounjaro, hoping that transforms my life too!

Hmm I can't quite remember and it was 2018/19 but perhaps around £2.5k.

Honestly it's the best thing I did. I was quite hairy including on my tummy it was embarrassing and stressful. Fair skin and dark hair is the ideal they say. I'm mixed race but dark brown hair and it worked fine for me.

I am struggling with this. At first I quite enjoyed finding and plucking the odd stray hair but its hard work as they seem to grow really from time to time. But now its an obsession and I check and find them several times a day. I also have trouble with damaged hair follicles or something so keep getting sore angry spotty red marks which I am struggling to get rid of. My hairs range from white thick hairs to the odd fine dark one to stick out fine light ones on my chin and tash would it work for me and do you have to grow them first and is it not painful?

Just to add that after lens replacement surgery you can’t develop cataracts. That is one of the advantages.

It's suitable for both dark and white hairs as the treatment doesn't depend on hair pigment (as laser does). The very light fluffy ones, my electrologist is not really bothering with as there are so many of them, she's mainly focussing on hairs with either pigment or a bit of thickness to them.

You do have to grow them out before each session, and you can't pluck in between, only shave. I was shaving between sessions and then I'd stop around 3 days before my appointment. But now there are so few hairs, I've stopped shaving and just let the stragglers grow.

It's a bit painful, but not too bad.

I would say you need to find a good electrologist. I initially went to someone who wasn't very skilled, and there wasn't much progress at all. When I switched to a different salon I immediately realised the other lady had been doing it wrong, and then I started seeing progress. The hairs should slide out without resistance when they've been treated, if it feels like they're being plucked they haven't been treated properly.

It is a long haul - for me it was about 3 months before I really saw noticeable progress. I'm now 6 months in, and I could see the whole process taking maybe 9 months up to a year, but the appointments get further apart - I was doing every 2 weeks initially, I'm now on 3 weeks and I think I'll go to 4 weeks soon.

Of course I do! UK people pay a fraction of what it actually costs - if you compare domestic fees to international student fees. So any degree for a fee-paying UK person is hugely subsidised by the 'state'.

and if they werent "subsidised" by the state then higher education would not be available to the vast majority of people who were not born into wealth. So your issue is?

My wonderful Westie. He enriched my life beyond measure and I tell him he is the best male I’ve ever lived with
My new mattress. It’s a Sealy ortho luxe.
Can’t believe how much difference it has made. Much less pain and I get a few more hours sleep( insomniac)

I have had 3 westies .. one as a child and my 2nd as an adult… she sadly died at 16 last year but I have a 3 year old. I have adored each and every one .. such joy and comfort and love.
