Come on mumsnet, creep my lifestyle!

Inspired by the personal stylist post - I’m wondering what is the best thing you’ve bought for yourself?

Mine has 100% been my peloton and all the dumbbells. First exercise I’ve ever stuck to!

I was surprised too! I think it’s because Vit B12 is water soluble so you can’t really overdose on it like you can with Vit D or Iron (which can both be toxic if you have too much - this is why it’s so important to check your levels first!)

I have had several now and I can feel it when I need another. Interestingly, it makes any symptoms of a deficiency slightly worse for a few days but then you level out. One surprising one I found was night sweats. Thought I was perimenopausal but nope. Was low B12!

I'm definitely going to book some tests through Thriva - thanks so much again!

Weight loss injections, life changing.

Helped me lose a significant amount of weight over the last year, off two medications I no longer need, blood pressure normal, more mobile and starting to exercise again.

Well done. 💐

Dyson Air wrap hairdryer and Dyson air strait both absolutely game changers. I can style hair to make it look bouncy and swishy or straight. Love em

What type of hair do you have? I am of the naturally curly, only a hairdresser can tame it variety. I am wondering if those products might make up for my poor operating skills, lack of of patience and hair with a mind of it's own?

Studying A’ level Art 30 years ago ( paid for these myself adult education) . I always regretted not putting in for the exam as suffered with anxiety but realise learning basics such as the colour wheel have helped me so much with clothes , make up, interiors, making greeting cards .
Working, studying and qualifying as a D.S.A has meant a lifelong care of my own teeth too.
Working, training and qualifying in Nursery Nursing meant that although I didn’t realise it at the time it really helped me feel more confident as a Mum in his early years. Harder now he is older lol.
Yoga , I don’t do it now but I suffer from inflammatory arthritis and the yoga moves I learnt then help me get out of the bath now and up of the floor .
self help books such as Dr Chatterjee.

NamechangeRugby · 06/05/2025 22:52

Gym membership with unlimited Yoga classes & swimming.

2 week residential cookery school somewhere very beautiful in my late 20's. Would love my kids to have opportunity of the same.

A really decent bike, joy to ride, use it all the time.

Brookes trainers

100% wool winter jumpers - so warm & useful

Herb seeds yonks ago - they now self seed in garden & I use in cooking all the time.

Tattoos. Best money I’ve ever spent.

An Open University diploma in advanced creative writing. I already had a good degree and didn’t need any more qualifications but I really wanted to do the creative writing courses for fun. I got a distinction and it was a big confidence boost for me.

A top of the range Kindle.

A personal trainer.

Thirty-two years ago, my navel piercing. Still got it and still love it.

I made a list of ‘50 things before 50’. There were a couple of big things, but otherwise all fairly manageable things I’d said ‘one day I’ll do…’
Doing them has enhanced my life in all kinds of small but significant ways-I see much more of friends (some of the things include groups of people) my teenage children have become involved in some of the activities in ways I never thought they would, I’ve met new people and some of the activities have meant my views have changed and my life has been richer as a result 😊
I certainly won’t end up doing all 50, but I don’t care-some feel irrelevant now, and I’m doing other stuff which feels more meaningful as a result of the things I have so far done. I’ll definitely do a ‘60 before 60’ list.

What were some of the things on your list?

uncomfortablydumb60 · 07/05/2025 00:01

My wonderful Westie. He enriched my life beyond measure and I tell him he is the best male I’ve ever lived with
My new mattress. It’s a Sealy ortho luxe.
Can’t believe how much difference it has made. Much less pain and I get a few more hours sleep( insomniac)

Psychotherapy. Changed my life.

Woofie7 · 07/05/2025 00:13

Exactly this. Make sure you know what type of therapy you want . C b t and emdr are my faves. But I’m not at all keen on psychodynamic . Then look at BACP registered in your area . Read their blurb and see if you get any good feelings .
if you don’t know what the types are you can google them .
try again it’s well worth it .

Weight loss injections
Counselling
Equals - confidence and greater sense of self esteem.

Studying age 50 opened my mind
Cold showers when I am feeling lethargic or miserable

Actually making a plan to follow my own dreams, and focusing on that and not everyone else’s lives/needs/wants.

What is equals please, an app?

Surprise mostly.

I think they thought I'd just quietly nod and promise to try and do better, just like every other meeting.

But then in their defense, they were very supportive, and pulled strings for me to leave sooner than my contract stated and I left on pretty good terms with them in the end.
But they did get someone new lined up to take my job within 48 hours of me handing in my notice, which was a big "wow, it really is Just A Job" moment for me. I'd made the job my be all and end all, but it turned out I was SUPER replaceable.

We always are. Despite doing a brilliant job. Giving it our all. It's a hard lesson to learn.

Could I ask why you’re not keen on psychodynamic? I’ve just started seeking a psychoanalytical counsellor and I’m struggling massively with the approach. It’s not structured which I struggle with.

I’ve had CBT for reactions to trauma events in the past and that worked well but need to deal with a more “whole of life” situation.

SlB09 · 07/05/2025 09:48

@Pushmepullu yes, what was on your list?!! I'd love to do this but some inspiration would be great 😃

Woofie7 · 07/05/2025 09:53

Pinkfloralcurtains I think I like the other types of counselling better as I feel I want to be able to do practical things if I’m at home with the feelings and Mind chat.

pshychodymic I experienced was very much about “ how do you feel? What do you think you can do about that?”

but I think at least try a few of each type and in-fact most counsellors, psychotherapists do most types or mix them.

definitely try it see what you think . Definitely BACP. Registered .

Fact remains, degrees are heavily subsidised, students pay a fraction of what it really costs - ask any international student what they pay and then realise that the 'investment in myself' was a massive charity donation on the part of tax payers.

Education is not "charity". Some countries have free universities fully subsidised by government.

There is nothing wrong with taxes being invested back into society, especially in education. It's how it should be.

Kilt · 07/05/2025 12:32

This is a sad post because mine is moving from my beloved Scotland in the 1980’s (due to the wrecking of my country by The then government (don’t mention the T woman) Employment was impossible to find or keep. We moved to the affluent SE of England and have flourished financially. So sad the various governments forget about my homeland that’s still suffering. My homeland is making progress slowly but it’s too late for me to return. I would be very poor had I stayed in my homeland but here in the SE of England I have a comfortable lifestyle.

Having a breast reduction at age 40 - had huge boobs since teens and they were even worse after childbirth!
Literally changed my life in terms of confidence, activities and lifestyle.
Now 20 yrs later I'm considering laser eye surgery - anyone had it done?

Wanderdust · 07/05/2025 13:08

Oh yes, I should have said laser eye surgery too! Do it! I wish I'd held off longer tho, got 10 years out of it. Now 40 and I need a low prescription for driving. But still don't regret it as my prescription was terrible before!
