Disagreement between 2 people on whether they are “average”…

Stats are
Person A - 50k
Person B ~70k
so that’s an annual income of ~120k

Cars
A-2014 owned outright
B-2025 owned outright

Buying house worth 500k.
Will have joint equal deposit of 220k

cash savings
A-20k
B-50k

A has 2 primary dc - separate 30k for Uni Costs saved already

Average or not average?

OP posts:
moofolk · 04/05/2025 22:44

Well above average

Wishitsnows · 04/05/2025 22:46

Well above average

verycloakanddaggers · 04/05/2025 22:46

Do you really need to ask?

The income is significantly above national average for working households. The house value is significantly above national average.

Edited to add: deposit significantly above average. Savings significantly above average.

DollydaydreamTheThird · 04/05/2025 22:46

Depends where you live. That's above average for my area.

Average especially with current standards of living. Sadly 50-70k annual salary won’t get as much as it used to.
And a 500k house, certainly in the the South East of England will only get you a 3 bedroom semi.

Swiftie1878 · 04/05/2025 22:47

Well above average, but not wealthy.

You don't need to prove a statistical fact, the stats are there for all to see.

Other person thinks stats are skewed…don’t ask! 🤣

XWKD · 04/05/2025 22:50

Above average, but still fairly ordinary.

SapporoBaby · 04/05/2025 22:50

Above average - you can find out what % of the country you are based on housing, income etc using this calculator by the IFS https://ifs.org.uk/tools_and_resources/where_do_you_fit_in

EmmaJane2025 · 04/05/2025 22:51

Why are you striving to be ‘average?!’

One thinks it’s all very average, other person thinks they are doing well and above average.

Then the other person seems to be below average at maths.

You can't argue with that kind of bollocks, let them think what they want. Everyone has the right to be wrong!

CuriousGeorge80 · 04/05/2025 22:58

Honestly I think it depends completely where you live. Parts of the UK that would be well above average and parts it would be below average. So statistically of course it’s above average, but if you live in certain areas it won’t feel that way at all.

WeAreAllBucked · 04/05/2025 23:02

It is def not average. But is not super wealthy.

DoYouReally · 05/05/2025 00:40

A is average.
B above average.

Yellowcakestand · 05/05/2025 00:44

Couldn't even dream of earning or saving anywhere near those amounts

MiloMinderbinder925 · 05/05/2025 01:22

The median gross annual earnings for full-time employees in the UK was £37,430 in April 2024.

Took 2 seconds.

DoAWheelie · 05/05/2025 01:33

Way above average. Most of the households I know are sub £30k, my own included.

So they don't trust the ONS but think a survey of random mumsnetters up past the watershed will be a valid sample? 🙄
Suspect you "both" know fair well you're above average. If this is true and not a shitpost then I hope whoever is unconvinced isn't making that salary in the sciences or education.

Statsquestion1 · 05/05/2025 06:22

DoYouReally · 05/05/2025 00:40

A is average.
B above average.

They were thinking more so as a couple @DoAWheelie yeah I think that’s where the person thinking the set up is not above average is b CV coming from, they are looking at friends/family and colleagues who earn more etc

OP posts:
CurlewKate · 05/05/2025 06:25

Oh, of course that’s well above average. Don’t be silly.

DisforDarkChocolate · 05/05/2025 06:27

Average in some circles but definitely not average overall.

HoskinsChoice · 05/05/2025 08:05

'A' is not average! The average salary is about £37k so at £50k they're earning more than one thousand pounds above the average - that's a lot of money!
