To splash £2,000 on a week’s holiday as a treat for a new job

I recently got a new job that means my salary will double from £2k a month to £4k a month. It’s taken years to get here through doing an extra qualification. I don’t have big savings and am renting.

I have the chance to do a week’s trip that would cost £2,000. AIBU to think sod it and splash £2k on a holiday as a reward for getting a new role?

Steady on - surely you need to settle into the new job first!

I’d save up money and annual leave and go somewhere long haul for 2 weeks. A once in a lifetime holiday possibly.

don’t spend it just for the sake of it

ManchNic · 04/05/2025 23:29

I'd definitely go! It's only 2 weeks wages now! Can you afford it?

Eenameenadeeka · 04/05/2025 23:34

I'd personally wait and see how you settle into it first.

slamdunk66 · 04/05/2025 23:37

I mean I spend that 4/5 times a year on a holiday so yanbu.

ShineBrighterxx · 04/05/2025 23:42

Do it ! Where are you going to go ? These opportunities don’t come around often - take it !

No3392 · 04/05/2025 23:43

Go for it!

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 04/05/2025 23:43

On the face of it, it sounds fine. We don’t know about outgoings/debts/savings.

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 26/06/2025 23:24

Absolutely do it! You deserve it. You’ve worked hard. Enjoy it.
and congratulations!

keepingsanity · 26/06/2025 23:27

Do you have a probationary period? Once that’s over I’d maybe spend half that so £1k
save the other half or pay off debt

Lavender14 · 26/06/2025 23:31

Congrats op!!

Personally, I'd do something smaller now to celebrate (because this is worth celebrating) but if you don't have decent savings and have high outgoings then I would agree with pps who are suggesting holding off until you're established in the role and know it's a fit you're happy with. If it were me, I'd focus on saving that 2k for a few months to build up a comfortable pot, and then go and do an amazing long haul somewhere exciting so you can go guilt free and know you've covered your own back.

Horseebooks · 27/06/2025 00:11

Do it, sod the settling in / saving up, just do it

iamnotalemon · 27/06/2025 00:12

Definitely treat yourself! Where are you thinking?

IDontHateRainbows · 27/06/2025 00:20

Yes, but I'd get through probation first. What if it doesn't work out?
