I don’t think I have ever felt the need to start a thread, but the picture of Trump as Pope i just saw on SkyNews is so absolutely incredibly offensive that i just can’t stop myself.

AIBU?!

He’s absolutely unhinged

I’m Catholic and although I found it frankly nauseating I know objectively it’s his ‘right’ to do it - I’ve never been in favour of blasphemy type restrictions, so although I disagree with that poster, they can find it funny if they want to as is their right

It goes beyond religion and blasphemy though - it’s about his sheer arrogance, entitlement and delusion. The fact that he thinks this is reasonable is extremely concerning in itself. We should all be worried about this, Catholic or not.

InNeedOfARefresh · 03/05/2025 20:26

I get that this is very offensive to Catholics. But if you think this is worse than anything else that he has done, I would suggest that you haven't been paying attention.

It really isn't. People are only "offended" because it is Trump. It merely makes him ridiculous.

Odras · 04/05/2025 00:35

I’m admittedly not to best catholic, very lapsed. But I don’t think it’s considered wrong to dress as a priest/the pope/jesus ect..

It’s just in very had taste because the pops just died and it looks like he’s making a joke about it.

It’s nothing anyway. He joked about being pope which is not a possibility at all. It is just a distraction.

YANBU, but Trump being offensive is a bit like the Pope being Catholic

🤣

This.

Panterusblackish · 04/05/2025 02:58

I note with interest that the cowardly custard didn't tweet a picture of himself as Mohammed.

Farticus101 · 04/05/2025 03:30

I am not Catholic but I find it really distasteful. The Pope has just died so he knows this is going to be offensive and yet did it anyway. I don't think he would try to claim he deserves the role of Pope in the same way he thinks he is entitled to Greenland or Gaza, but there is something dangerously narcissistic about him.

QuaintShaker · 04/05/2025 03:45

I don't think it would crack the top 1,000 of worst things he's done tbh.

RipleyJones · 03/05/2025 20:34

So what? So what if people are offended?
I can’t stand the man but still.

If he were a atheist it would be one thing, but he professes himself to be a Christian.

I’m not sure it would be ok if he was an atheist.

Many of the evangelicals think that the pope is the anti christ.

ThisAlertRaven · 04/05/2025 08:34

He's a pathetic excuse for a man. Pope Francis was everything Trump isn't. So disrespectful but what can you expect after he posted the trump gaza AI film.

UName38 · 04/05/2025 08:35

I posted above about not being offended as a Catholic. I am now though offended and hurt by the responses when challenged. If you know something you have done has upset someone else or offended or very upset apologise.
PBS
from catholic Bishops in New York

“There is nothing clever or funny about this image, Mr. President,” they wrote. “We just buried our beloved Pope Francis and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St. Peter. Do not mock us.”

Response from white house
President Trump flew to Italy to pay his respects for Pope Francis and attend his funeral, and he has been a staunch champion for Catholics and religious liberty

JD Vance - met the Pope and being in Rome at Easter would have known how Catholics were feeling
Vice President JD Vance, who is Catholic and was one of the last foreign officials to meet with Francis before the pope died, also joked about Secretary of State Marco Rubio becoming pope, suggesting Rubio could add it to the long list of titles he holds, including national security adviser and acting archivist.

Pope Francis and the church have many failings but he was an incredible man

But the White House rejected any suggestion that the Republican president was making fun of the papacy.
"President Trump flew to Italy to pay his respects to Pope Francis and attend his funeral, and he has been a staunch champion for Catholics and religious liberty," said press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

2 things can be true - you can go to a funeral to pay respects and you can make fun of the papacy.

A mature adult in a position of responsibility like this would not do this.
He is not going to gain support but he is likely to lose support from people.

So why do it?

Abhannmor · 04/05/2025 08:53

He is beyond grotesque. One of my gay friends has always found him very camp. Back when he was running against Hillary he said : 'Trump comes across as a Trojan horse , always with the macho posturing.'
Perhaps the world would be a safer place if he could just go and play with his dressing up box in the twilight of his years.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 04/05/2025 08:53

I saw the picture but assumed it was done by someone anti-Trump to make a point. Was this actually sanctioned by him? If so that is horrendous. I'm not a Catholic but find it offensive

Namerchangee · 04/05/2025 08:54

It’s offensive, sure, but personally I’d save my outrage for the Catholic church and the untold number of children sexually abused under its auspices.

It was posted by him and shared by the official White House social media accounts.

Is he Mr Benn?

This. Why are Catholics not offended by the disgusting and criminal behaviour of their church but offended by this?! They will complain about Trump's disgraceful behaviour but continue to attend their shameful organisation.

And I say this as someone from a Catholic family.

hamstersarse · 04/05/2025 09:28

I’m not typically a fan of the Catholic Church wot wiv all the paedophile harbouring so find it quite funny

JohnAmendAll · 04/05/2025 09:37

It is tacky beyond belief and totally lacking in taste, but then that's Fat Donny all over isn't it.

Dontcallmescarface · 04/05/2025 10:25

I'm an Atheist and even I was "wtf" when I saw it. The man is an absolute bellend who shouldn't be running a bath without adult supervision, let alone a country.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 04/05/2025 11:17

He’s an utter bastard.

I think we have to remember that he isn’t just a deranged lunatic. This is all done on purpose. He has a big team behind him and they are planning every step of the way. They want to continue with this stuff in order to erode our sense of shock over time, so we get used to it. Then when he does the REALLY shocking stuff that he’d like to do, it will cause less of an impact. I think he’d like to do a Putin and get rid of democracy altogether.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 04/05/2025 11:19

And he said something about how he’s like that job a couple of weeks ago, didn’t he?
