Relatively lighthearted as I probably won’t say anything but… sitting here with a cup of tea staring at it.

YABU - it’s fine
YANBU - annoying

Think you should do some gardening in your garden then you’ll have something to look at on your side of the fence

UnstableCow · 03/05/2025 19:53

Toootss · 03/05/2025 19:46

I penned this to inspire you OP:-

The Fence and the Trees
A fence once stood in a quiet field,
Of weathered wood and iron sealed,
It marked a line both firm and plain,
Yet bore no malice, bore no chain.
On either side, the tall trees grew,
With leaves of green and bark of hue,
They whispered low in morning breeze,
And danced in dusk with graceful ease.
The fence would watch through seasons’ span,
The laughter of the leaves began,
And though it split the earth below,
The roots ignored the line they know.
The oaks would lean with gentle grace,
And shade both sides in their embrace,
Their branches reached across the line—
A quiet pact, a soft design.
The fence would creak, the trees would sing,
Of boundary and blossoming,
One held the space, the other grew,
Each faithful to what they must do.
So here they stand—both wood and will—
In meadow wide and evening still,
A fence, some trees, a sky above,
A lesson drawn in quiet love

What, your fence or patch of dead grass

Essydubz · 03/05/2025 20:00

Honestly, and as respectfully as I can as a keen gardener, I would be more worried about staining your dry parched looking fence and tending to your lawn. Maybe add a flower bed and reduce some of that patchy grass. At least your neighbour is trying. And again, I don't mean any malice. Hugs S

Frostynoman · 03/05/2025 20:00

I would agree that the lack of straight lines and uniformity is somewhat irritating. Nothing a gin wouldn’t sort out

Sortofdontwantto · 03/05/2025 20:01

Surely you’d rather look at some plants rather than a vista of identikit box houses as you currently have. It’s depressing right now

VivIsBlonde · 03/05/2025 20:02

ThirdStorm · 03/05/2025 16:38

They’ll definitely fill out, hiding the frame and be beautiful your side. I think it’s a Red Robin and they are glorious. I look out on these behind my fence.

I would absolutely hate to have to look at that every day!
I don’t like trees they just make a mess in our garden when they drop leaves and as for blossom or anything else that flowers!!!

Mumsgirls · 03/05/2025 20:03

Haha wa waiting for the sofa in the front garden with the scrap washer and a trampoline

Laurensorrenson · 03/05/2025 20:06

@Whitelotus5 ...yes your garden is indeed a bit of an eyesore. Don't worry I'm sure you can pretty it up by planting things.

LillyPJ · 03/05/2025 20:06

If it's your fence you don't like, plant something there, like a hedge or a row of espalier fruit trees. If it's the supports for the trees on the other side you don't like, it'll look much better when the trees are more mature.

GlomOfNit · 03/05/2025 20:10

Could you possibly be referring to the espaliered fruit tree saplings your neighbour has tastefully planted along his/her side of the fence? Gardens are for plants and modestly sized trees. These aren't even blocking your light or view, and they won't - they'll be slow growing and will always have that shape.

Your boring, flat and unadorned fence, however ... how boring is THAT?!

LillyPJ · 03/05/2025 20:10

CautiousLurker01 · 03/05/2025 18:32

The frames for the trees are fairly temporary but normally used when planting trees. They’ll probably be removed by next year? They’ll provide much needed privacy for you both in time.

No - those kind of frames stay in place.

@AlmostSummer25 Try with OP’s fence photo! 😀 She needs more suggestions.

Okay, as I said technically challenged AI virgin, I don't even know where to start??

🤣🤣🤣🤣 it's okay you can laugh at me 🤣🤣🤣

I'm glad you like it, but for me that's a bit big so close and a bit overwhelming. I wouldn't mind the height if it was a tree like an oak or even a willow,

It might be less overwhelming in real life too might just be the photograph

LittleGreenDragons · 03/05/2025 20:20

PicklesMacGraw · 03/05/2025 17:36

What a snide comment.

OP the trees will look good soon. It’s just because they are new that you are noticing them so much.

No it's not but yours is. I have no idea if she likes flowers from her picture as it's devoid of life but if she likes a particular sort then we might be able to recommend something.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 03/05/2025 20:20

Shove a trellis on it and buy some climbing plants. Honeysuckle is your friend, also climbing roses, passiflora, white jasmine, clematis . . .

You don't have to look at that! NB paint it with preservative before you plant anything.

ThirdStorm · 03/05/2025 20:28

@AlmostSummer25 ive let it get a bit big really, it’ll get a trim at the end of the season!

Cotonsugar · 03/05/2025 20:31

I’m wondering what’s keeping the trellises standing upright? Gusty winds and they will blow over. They probably want to have some privacy. A few years down the road and the mature trees will look great.

TrainGame · 03/05/2025 20:32

Whitelotus5 · 03/05/2025 16:32

And yeah I was referring to the 4 giant trellis’s that popped up today - genuinely lighthearted, I realise they will look better when they’ve grown in.

OP, YOUR garden is the garden eyesore.

I can't stand a plain lawn with nothing in it. Your garden is horrible.

I'd be delighted if I were you that someone had stuck a bit of nature in and tried to blur the horrendous box like feeling of estate-style houses with those grim fences outlining everyone's tiny little box.

There's nothing quite like a mature garden. Do you like fruit? Veg? Most of it's produced due to bees cross-pollinating. Perhaps you could try doing your bit? Plant a few things for Mother Nature instead of mocking your neighbours?

Whodathoughtit2 · 03/05/2025 20:33

You are obviously BU. But so are the fence snobs, the red brick snobs. The person who made the dead body comment is definitely NBU however

AlmostSummer25 · 03/05/2025 20:15

I like trees but I agree that fallen leaves and blossom create a lot of work. Column type of trees work better, especially in small gardens😊

She might be mocking her neighbours but you’re being rude about the op’s garden too. Not everyone is a gardener/has the time for the work.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago.

The second best time is today.

My point is, whatever time the OP puts in, she will reap 1000 fold.

I can't believe someone would be annoyed at pleached shrub/trees going in, trying to soften the boxes that they've all got.

OP just needs to give her head a wobble.

And it's in AIBU. You expect direct responses. So that is what she got.

if this was in 'gardening' fine. But it's not.

It seems like OP expected everyone to agree with her, and perhaps it's a shock to find out others actually like green stuff.

Utterknowitall · 03/05/2025 20:47

@Whitelotus5 I have pleached hornbeams and I had forgotten they looked like that once upon a time!
