Plant a clematis to grow up your fence. Add some roses and hebes and lavender at the bottom. You’ll start to have a real garden.

I thought you meant the bare fence and wanted ideas for planting to soften it.
The pleached trees will look great when the grow in, but will take a while. You need something to divert the eye from the fence- like your own planting!

Paint your fence dark oak and put a feature like a bird bath or some other ornament in front of it. That will give you a focal point against a neutral background and detract your eyeline from what you don't want to be looking at.

they won't look crucified for very long, they will soon grow over the trellis and will look lovely, much nicer than the plain red brick of their house
