Why can't we discuss how fat we've all become?

1000 replies

Nodinnernogift · 02/05/2025 16:49

Obesity is becoming the norm. Why aren't we allowed express concern or any views that are less than celebratory about this?

I mean seriously why?

If whole parts of your country were in the grip of a meth addiction we would be allowed have a discussion about it.

National campaigns to stop people smoking are applauded.

Look around you. Look in the mirror. We are all getting bigger and bigger. It reminds me of when people would visit the US in the 80s / 90s and come back with tales of huge people and massive portion sizes.

Does nobody care? It's like the Emperors New Clothes. I don't get why it's a sacrosanct topic.

Yabu - it's nobody's business
Yanbu - it's fine to address this as a societal problem

We have lost sight of what a healthy weight is. I have recently lost 30 kg Mounjaro. I was a size 18 now an 8 and slap bang in the middle of healthy bmi. What shocked me was that at size 16 (the national average for adult females in be the UK ) I was still 82 kg which was nearly 20 kg overweight.. that’s over 40 lbs of fat that mostly sits around the middle. .. and this is considered normal. We have ‘normalised’ being fat.
I believe that half the problem is that we have forgotten how to feel hungry. We spend so much of our day filling our faces that we have lost the ability to feel truly hungry and then and only then - eat.a protein heavy meal with slow release low carb veg legumes and nuts. Do that and you won’t ever need to snack .

Well said.

The normalization of fat is a massive public health problem.

bumblingbovine49 · 03/05/2025 13:32

Probably 🤔.

There you go! All fixed. Turns out all you needed was a nasty peice of work on the internet to insult you and now you’re all skinny! Who know, eh?! The cure of lack of self control!

JosephsCoat · 03/05/2025 13:40

Thanks to the couple of posters who have already pointed out the fucking obvious to Blueskies25 as well as their very poor reading comprehension skills.

Mmm, I found myself hoping the taxpayer didn't fund that poster's education.

Best of luck...but please don't call yourself a fat cunt!

Thank you I won't call myself that. I do like who I am and what I look like. I am only losing weight for my health and not to be slim for others. I don't really want to be slim only a reasonable weight for me.

JHound · 03/05/2025 13:48

You can express your views. People do it all the time. Fatphobia is the norm.

OonaStubbs · 03/05/2025 13:48

There should be massive restrictions on the sale and marketing of unhealthy foods.

Actually what should happen is all retail sale of food should be banned. The only food should be a government supplied rudimentary paste that comes through a tap in your home that is specially designed to supply all nutritional needs but be fairly unappetising. IMO this simple step would end the obesity epidemic in one fell swoop.

KimberleyClark · 03/05/2025 14:20

I’m fat. 5ft 2, 11st 12, size 14. I am trying to address it. Like @bumblingbovine49 I did Weightwatchers 12 years ago and lost 2stone and went down to a size 8, I was 1.5st lighter when I started WW than I am now. I’m too scared to donWW again in case the rebound weight gain is even worse this time. I have an underactive thyroid which doesn’t help.

MarkingBad · 03/05/2025 14:25

Blueskies25 · 03/05/2025 11:10

Are you trying to imply that being overweight is solely a working class issue because I can assure you it is not

I don't know what you read or how you decided to interpret it, but it wasn't in my post that suggested that at all

Commonsense22 · 03/05/2025 14:27

I am currently overweight after being slim for most of my life. People are always finding excuses for me - i have been through tough times, multiple pregnancies, perimenopause ect.
But no, i know I am overweight and overeating is the problem.

I see many threads on mn saying a size 14 or 16 is healthy. It is very rarely so unless people are very tall or have a wide bone structure. It's generally overweight. We need to say that, i think it's the generalisation of those sizes being the norm which is more problematic than body positivity for the much larger sizes.

Individual cases all have reasons and are not to judge. But we shouldn't be aiming for 14 as a national average size imo.

What happens to all the excess skin after people have lost weight? Unless someone can afford surgery then isn’t that just as bad?

Of course it isn’t! Excess skin can arise from any weight loss, but there’s no way it’s dangerous for your health in the same way being obese is.

Allseeingallknowing · 03/05/2025 14:38

Zempy · 03/05/2025 14:32

If there is a lot of excess skin, then it can affect mobility, cause problems of sweating and infections in the folds, not to mention the mental aspect of having ugly, redundant skin marring the achievement of losing tons of weight. Not many can afford to have several surgeries to remove it.

I was talking about cooking from scratch though...I cook from scratch a lot but the food I make is imo far nicer than what previous generations ate...like I said, boiled veg, potatoes, unseasoned meat. Nowadays I have access to different ingredients, TV shows and the internet showing me how to cook different more exciting dishes....

Absolute nonsense.

I'm an excellent cook. Was brought up by a mother who was very interested in food. Always ate great things, I learned to cook because I wanted to eat.

BUT!

I just don't eat too much. I eat enough. And then stop.

The reasons people overeat are complicated I guess. But it's nothing to do with eating great food.

That sounds like an excuse.

I’m personally sick of the body shaming nonsense, I don’t think a size 16 is shameful but I do think a 26 is shameful. As adults we have control over our bodies & to allow our bodies to get to that state is shameful

I don’t think either size 16 or 26 is shameful per se but both are overweight.

I am a size 8/10 and appear slim with clothes on but I have belly fat, upper arm and upper leg fat, which I need to lose for my health.

It is 100% my fault and 100% in my control - I know what I need to do, I am just not good at doing it. If am offered a biscuit at work I pretty much always accept it and a second one. Whereas there are several people that will always decline it - some say if they have one then they will be tempted to have more so they just say no.

Potato1234 · 03/05/2025 13:08

The original point that was said is that food is now awful. What? I shop at the fishmongers and get fruit and veg at the greengrocer. I’m lucky I can do this. I wouldn’t say my food choices are awful. Surely fresh fish some decades ago is the same as now?

I really wish it was - unfortunately fresh food isn't the same now as it once was. Fish is generally farmed now and waters are way more polluted. Fruit has more sugar due to selective breeding patterns. Everything has more microplastics and chemicals. Not much we can do but it sucks.

GoodCharl · 03/05/2025 14:53

Weightloss injections should be available via gp with less restrictions eg not have to wait to being really ill before you qualify but with the stipulation that you still need to pay for them. That way proper monitoring can take place, dietary advice etc. plus with people self funding, they will take it seriously. Food noise is real for some people. Taking that away is a game changer

PinkArt · 03/05/2025 14:58

Blueskies25 · 03/05/2025 12:50

Your issue seems to stem from a complete lack of self control

Whereas your lack of self control appears focused around being a bit of a dick to people online for no obvious reason. Have you tried just controlling your impulse to make shitty comments?
It's a shame for you that you couldn't understand the huge amount of self control that decades of weight loss will have taken. Well done you for being superior to the fatties though.

Which is why I don't buy fish from the supermarket and shop seasonally and locally.

I no longer live in the UK. But went back to Britain a few weeks ago. I was utterly shocked how obese everyone is. It's a real health crisis

Everyone?
Lots of us aren't obese.

I see you couldn't resist a judgemental dig at the end...it's not an excuse. I said I was fat ..I'm not stupid. I'm simply saying it's perfectly possible to get fat by eating real, home cooked non upf food

BritishFoodFan · 03/05/2025 15:11

I eat salmon about twice a year, fished from the river Tweed, it's punishingly expensive and a seasonal treat.

See also sea trout, native oysters, local lamb, rose veal, meat and fish shouldn't be cheap.

I don't know why you're fat. I know why I'm not.
