Why can't we discuss how fat we've all become?

1000 replies

Nodinnernogift · 02/05/2025 16:49

Obesity is becoming the norm. Why aren't we allowed express concern or any views that are less than celebratory about this?

I mean seriously why?

If whole parts of your country were in the grip of a meth addiction we would be allowed have a discussion about it.

National campaigns to stop people smoking are applauded.

Look around you. Look in the mirror. We are all getting bigger and bigger. It reminds me of when people would visit the US in the 80s / 90s and come back with tales of huge people and massive portion sizes.

Does nobody care? It's like the Emperors New Clothes. I don't get why it's a sacrosanct topic.

Yabu - it's nobody's business
Yanbu - it's fine to address this as a societal problem

Read ultra processed people by Dr Chris Van Tulken. It is literally one of the main points of issue. That UPFs disrupt your hunger signals, making you eat more and consume more calories.

I’m sorry but you must be able to name one “compound” or ingredient that actually does this.

ultra processed foods do not share ingredients or have common ingredients so if it’s explained in the book you must be able to identify just one ingredient that’s is doing this- frankly quite stunning impact- of disrupting hunger signals

3luckystars · 03/05/2025 13:04

BodySlims is a really fantastic programme I did with my sister last year. It’s all about this discussion, and you start thinking about what we are all doing to ourselves, how we got into this situation and you also walk one hour a day, every day. It’s a fantastic and life changing programme in that it changes your mindset towards food.

we use food for a lot of fixes

You would need to fix your head or no weight loss solution will work long term (except the drugs and they do work but some people don’t want to take them and that’s ok.)

I would highly recommend BodySlims anyway

Funny that, different postcodes have a different obese : not obese ratio. It's almost as if it has some relationship with socio-economic background/fresh food availability/affordability (etc.)

Before making judgements or jumping to the old trope about 'just eat less, move more - simple!'. Please read 'Why we eat (too much)'. The old way we think about obesity is beginning to be debunked and challenged.

But, in answer to your original question. Yes we should be able to discuss it, and yes, there should be more education and campaigns to change it!! It's not healthy at all!! We need a good shake up - while understanding current scientific understanding around the condition.

So not just upfs then...like I said cooking from scratch is not a magic bullet which will cure obesity.

The original point that was said is that food is now awful. What? I shop at the fishmongers and get fruit and veg at the greengrocer. I’m lucky I can do this. I wouldn’t say my food choices are awful. Surely fresh fish some decades ago is the same as now?

It’s not really true. The vast majority of postcodes will have some obese and some not obese people. (I mean, generally- it’s not like the whole country get weighted to actually know)

if you mean there are pockets of obesity which also correlate with poverty then of course that’s true. But you’re taking in a very generalised way about post codes in a way that isn’t really accurate

It’s hilarious that you’re still attempting to justify your obesity.

It’s hilarious you won’t admit that you haven’t a clue what you’re talking about.

Chipsahoy · 03/05/2025 13:11

If you look at America, we have become more and more like them and they’ve had obesity for a long time. They have had convenience foods and fast food for longer and sedentary lifestyles. I remember the first time I went to America about twenty years and being so shocked at the drive through everything. Even banks.

I am slim but it’s genetics, dh battles with weight as does members of family. So I don’t think you can blame one thing.

I was just making the point that it's possible to get fat by cooking from scratch and avoiding upfs...and also that food nowadays is just much more exciting and flavourful even when you cook yourself as we have access to so many more ingredients from across the world

This is why it’s flawed to say “Spanish/ French/ Swedish/ Russian people don’t have an obesity problem”

they do. But even where it’s not that bad, it will be in 20 years. Like you I remember being gobsmacked at fat people on Jerry springer. Now look, that’s us.

its not skill or education, its developing, getting richer, catching up.

Still waiting for the compound or ingredients that disrupt hunger signals so you can demonstrate how much you know.

id also challenge you to find one post of mine that details any information about my own weight or eating habits, before you just turn into a 6 year of screeching YEAH BUT YOU FAT because you’re panicking about saying stupid things

No I know. I just didn’t understand how food is awful now, real food. A fish is a fish no? @mummytoonetryingfortwo

Fish is full of microplastics these days.

No tsk. A fish now has a compound in it that disrupts hunger signals! We just don’t know what it’s called, or where it sits on the “ingredients list”

Augustus40 · 03/05/2025 13:23

Amazon has just delivered oatmeal to me to add to my evening weetabix. Hope it helps! It supposedly reduces hunger.

Unfortunately I have always had a large appetite though I do control carbs as much as I can.

I am 17 stone and at that weight and my height being 5 ft 4 in I am a fat cunt. Today is the first day of my weight loss journey so no UPFs will enter my mouth. I am a lot like conedycook I cook everything from scratch and I do tend to eat more than I should. Ideally I would like to go down to 11 stone.

Not the point of this thread but I personally love snag tights. I don't wear any other make. Even when younger and very slim I struggled with tights due to my height, and found them really uncomfortable. I love that I can wear tights that fit and are actually comfortable!

Not only people , I volunteer in a charity shop , if anything vintage comes in , the sizes are tiny .
I reckon a vintage size 14 is a today's 8/10 .

Yes, vintage clothing tells the story.

Also look at vintage plates and bowls. Very small compared to now, even up through the 1970s.

I’d love to tell you what your issue appears to be, but it’d only get deleted. Still, I’m sure everyone on the thread is getting the picture.

Which is why every woman wore a girdle. The shape wear, including for bikinis, was brutal. The bra tops were moulded, so boobs looked a lot bigger.

Obesity is primarily linked to poverty. It's growing across Europe, including the much admired France, were the population is below average earnings. The food industry was allowed to provide us with rubbish, addictive food. While our lifestyles have seen a drop. It's natural to seek out dopamine hits, every species does it. The combination of sugar, fat and carbs (the average £1.50 pizza) provides that.

Incorrect. Nobody I knew wore girdles or moulded bra tops 😆 That sort of clothing was too expensive and reserved for the much older woman. We just didn’t need it. Sorry to ruin your narrative but I was a teen in the 70s and know how it was.
