Why can't we discuss how fat we've all become?

1000 replies

Nodinnernogift · 02/05/2025 16:49

Obesity is becoming the norm. Why aren't we allowed express concern or any views that are less than celebratory about this?

I mean seriously why?

If whole parts of your country were in the grip of a meth addiction we would be allowed have a discussion about it.

National campaigns to stop people smoking are applauded.

Look around you. Look in the mirror. We are all getting bigger and bigger. It reminds me of when people would visit the US in the 80s / 90s and come back with tales of huge people and massive portion sizes.

Does nobody care? It's like the Emperors New Clothes. I don't get why it's a sacrosanct topic.

Yabu - it's nobody's business
Yanbu - it's fine to address this as a societal problem

with the increased in neurodiversity within the population there will be increased obesity.

Redpeach · 02/05/2025 22:30

bluesinthenight · 02/05/2025 22:25

That's because fat has become so normalised we don't see it as such anymore. I am fat myself and trying to get slim again. When I put on weight when I was younger I really felt it, but I don't so much now because so many people are even fatter than me.

Over eating has become normalised, I'm not sure fat has

CaptainFuture · 02/05/2025 22:31

GildedRage · 02/05/2025 22:05

@CaptainFuture The Obesity Medicine Association’s definition of obesity is “a chronic, relapsing, multifactorial, neurobehavioral disease, wherein an increase in body fat promotes adipose tissue dysfunction and abnormal fat mass physical forces, resulting in adverse metabolic, biomechanical, and psychosocial health consequences.”

And as per pp absolutely NOTHING to do.with calorie intake? If you were trapped somewhere you still managed to have a calorie intake of 1200 calories a day for a year.... you'd definitely still be obese?..... like the other chronic conditions couldn't resolve in this situation... not having free access to food wouldn't affect obesity?

Comedycook · 02/05/2025 22:31

CaptainFuture · 02/05/2025 22:26

So nothing to do with eating more than you need?

Obviously most people are overweight or obese because they eat too much. But the question is, how can some people control what they eat more than other people can? So for example, my DH feels hungry, he eats, he feels satiated, stops thinking of food...the next time he thinks about it is when he feels hungry again. I however think about food constantly....even when I've been thin and restricting my food intake, it is constantly on my mind...therefore I need to have so much more discipline than someone my DH.

katkintreats · 02/05/2025 22:33

YABU because it’s discussed ALL. THE. TIME. It’s one of the most frequent topics on here, to the point it’s getting boring 😂

CaptainFuture · 02/05/2025 22:36

But @Comedycook if you want to overeat you can, it only affects you. The issue is like on here when people want to use this'its not my fault' attitude and take it forward to personal and working life and expect others to take on their tasks, or restrict their life because of issues related to their obesity.

GildedRage · 02/05/2025 22:38

@CaptainFuture are alcoholics or drug addicts cured when forced to abstain?
No one would say that involuntary forms of treatment work long term.

Back to the behavioral causes of obesity: neurodivergence is one as are past history of abuse and poverty.
Many of the "biggest losers" regained the weight. your person on an island would almost have to come back to a different world and due to the chronic and reoccuring nature of the disease chances are high it would come back because their food choices and quantities are altered due to hormonal and brain conditions.

ilovesushi · 02/05/2025 22:39

Just to throw in a different take, I like that many teenage girls and young women are interested in building muscle now rather than starving themselves. I find it hard to shake off the size zero indoctrination I absorbed in my 20s. My logical brain knows toned, athletic, muscley is good, but the brainwashed part thinks hipbones and ribs are better.

OneTealMentor · 02/05/2025 22:39

Gettingfattertimetostop · 02/05/2025 22:08

A relative visited us recently and when I pointed out the big hill we were driving up was what I walked up and down twice a day they said they’d rather stay fat than ever walk up there.

I’ve put on a few kilos (3.5kg) this year and know exactly why-less hill, more food. It’s time to rein myself back in. My BMI is 22 but I have fat around my middle and chunky thighs and arms.

I’ve never understood how people put on weight, feel uncomfortable, bemoan their weight, but don’t do anything about it and carry on getting fatter. It’s not easy to lose weight sometimes but it’s usually possible. The podiatrist today praised my mum for following her advice because most people don’t want to help themselves and I think that’s reflected across society with people not wanting to do anything that is any effort.

I have ADHD and many users of WLI have said on mumsnet that it really helps with their symptoms. A health worker above said they should be available almost no questions asked which I disagree with but I’d love a month or two of WLI for less ADHD symptoms and a BMI of 19.

Wouldn't adhd meds have the same effect?

You are bang on with that point. 👏

Jennifershuffles · 02/05/2025 22:42

It's talked about ad nauseum.

GildedRage · 02/05/2025 22:44

@Comedycook well for starters men have different metabolisms than women.

That being said genetics play a role in appetite and again the more obese a person is the adipose tissue and release of hunger hormones along with direct effects on other hormones means it's a bit of a vicious circle at one point.

ForPearlViper · 02/05/2025 22:45

Nodinnernogift · 02/05/2025 16:55

Actually this is very true. We have a hobby that takes us around the country most weekends and I have joked how certain postcodes have a direct correlation with different BMI averages.

I feel like we are losing a grip of what's normal.

OP uses 'we' a lot in the first post suggesting she includes herself in a wider 'we' getting bigging but this second post discloses the real intent. Let's make ourselves feel better by putting down others.

So that's that then. Nooones EVER responsible for any choices they make....
Everything that's wrong or difficult is something they can't help (poor lamb, DONT JUDGE YOU EVIL SHIT!) or someone else's fault! Even with simple stuff like deciding what food to put in your mouth!

GildedRage · 02/05/2025 22:48

@OneTealMentor adhd meds can be extremely appetite suppressing BUT the meds do not cover 24 hours per day. generally they struggle to cover 6 hours and dr's don't prescribe more due to the potentially addictive nature of many of the meds.
the issue is the dopamine sugar rush that is very rewarding to the adhd brain (i don't have adhd but have very close experience 3 kids, parents, grandkids etc.)
all in my family have a strong craving for sweet and salty.

Booboobagins · 02/05/2025 22:49

We need to curb the obesity pandemic now before it gets out of control.

I think it was Poland that had an issue with heart attack rates and low mortality. The government decided to invest in education programmes. Teaching people about nutrition, cooking etc. I dont know if they interfered with food in shops but it worked. 10 yrs later mortality increased significantly. Less general ill health etc.

Would education help? Maybe for some people, yes. I dont think it would be a bad thing at all.

I was slim, I used to run - I think its the best form of exercise for general health but especially mental wellbeing. I got a problem with my knee and had to stop running. I'm too young for a knee replacement so I get steroid injections. These added to my sedentary lifestyle = obesity. I really want to run again and every other form of exercise other than things I can't do like step, aerobics, dance, just don't interest me.

I bought a weighted hola hoop but honestly the thought does not interest me at all. I'm going to buy a fitness trampoline and a pair of those carbon fibre trainers. I think that might just give me the type of exercise I crave. Wish me luck!

GildedRage · 02/05/2025 22:50

@CaptainFuture don't throw the toys out the pram, for some people mainly those who are chronically obese there is more at play than free choice. That is why the wli are very helpful for a certain category of people or weight loss surgery etc.

I’m a higher rate tax payer. I‘m paying for obese people to ruin their bodies and put extra strain on the NHS. There is far too much coddling of fat people in this country

how do you know that some fat people are not higher rate tax payers too or is being a porker something confined to the lower orders? One of my family members is significantly overweight, they are also on nearly £70k p,a

Comedycook · 02/05/2025 22:52

Very interesting...I am very much like this too. In fact I sometimes just crave strong tastes so will even dip a spoon in mustard and eat it...sounds crazy writing that down. If I am eating and have finished, I sometimes pour a little extra salt on plate, dip my finger in and taste the salt...

So 25% of what I’m on. It’s a fact that obese people will, across their lifetimes, cost more than they pay in. But I also think it’s obvious that across most firms, especially in the city, the highest positions are fit, healthy people.

I don't put food in my mouth though. Still morbidly obese.

The people who don't have free choice into what food that they eat, absolutely need safeguarding referrals. No-one should ever be force fed, and agree it's appalling if there's people being made to ingest food they are vehemently against. Please make.sure you are reporting this to relevant bodies.

You're PEG fed? Hopefully your SALT and dietician are sorting this. What a safeguarding failure for you to become obsese under their care!

Do you think alcoholics and drug addicts have free choice?
