To keep DD off school tomorrow?

VictorianSqualor · 18/05/2008 17:28

DP normally does the school run but tomorrow he has to be somewhere early so will be leaving the house at 6am.
To get DD to school I would have to leave at 7:30am, get a bus (full of people going into the city for work) with 7 yr old DD, 3 yr old DS and 4week old DS2 (in his buggy, on a rammed bus), get off this bus in town, get a nother bus (a shitty little thing that is full at2pm let alone 8am) to the school, and then do the return journey.

I do this journey everyday at home time, but don't mind doing it then because it's nowhere near as busy and I don't leave until 2pm, to have me and three DC's ready tomorrow on time I'll be having to get up about 5am!

She's worked hard doing her SAT's all last week so I don't think one day will be a big thing, or should I make more of an effort and do this nightmare journey to take her?

I wouldn't think badly of you if you let her have to day off to save your sanity, I assume no-one else woud give her a lift if you asked

BroccoliSpears · 18/05/2008 17:31

Hmm... I would say you ought to take her. I think the message that school is not optional is an important one.

But the journey does sound awful and I wouldn't judge you too hard if you didn't.

ElizabethBeresford · 18/05/2008 17:31

Have a nice duvet day the two of you!

I think if you are agonising with this, it proves that you have the right attitude to attendance. The strict guidelines were brought in in my opinion to nanny the people who don't realise that you shouldn't just do this on a whim, or once a week, or if there's somebody you know on Jeremy Vile!

Sounds like your DD deserves a nice Mum & daughter day.

That's my opinion, and my dd has missed two days of school since last Sep. She was sick one of them, and the other time, friends visited us and I got half term wrong! So I let her stay off because it would have been so silly (imo) to send her to school.

MargaretMountford · 18/05/2008 17:32

what broccoli just said

VictorianSqualor · 18/05/2008 17:33

That's the problem BS, I don't want her to think she can have time off as and when it suits.

CG, no-one lives near us, our tenancy came to an end and we had to move quite far away from the school to find somewhere cheap/big enough but we didn't want her to move schools.

Cargirl!! Just wondering if this detail caught your eye, op has a four week old baby.

SheWillBeLoved · 18/05/2008 17:33

Buggar that

The sensible part of me says take her, but the reasonable part says you had a baby 4 weeks ago and could probably do without the hassle so tell her it's sunday when she wakes up in the morning

Blu · 18/05/2008 17:35

Is it a very expensive taxi trip?
You could treat yourself by taking it one way each run?

CarGirl · 18/05/2008 17:35

What I have said wrong????? Yes she has a 4 week old hence I woud say let her have the day off for her own sanity!

misdee · 18/05/2008 17:35

are you sure your dd's dont have an inset day tomorrow. mind do...

paros · 18/05/2008 17:36

could you afford a taxi

seeker · 18/05/2008 17:36

Is it a very silly question to ask why you chose a school that's impossible to get to? What if your car broke down or dh broke his arm or something?

ElizabethBeresford · 18/05/2008 17:37

Cargirl, I'm REALLY SORRY!!! You agree with me! Stay sane and take the day off in these awkward circumstances!

I think I meant broccoli. But actually, never mind me because everybody is entitled to their opinion anyway, so

Blu · 18/05/2008 17:37

gawd, yes, doing it with a 4 week baby and toddler is a nightmare, even when your DH does one way. Do you spend 3 hours a day doing the school run? Is there a friend with a child at the same school who can give her a lift?

VictorianSqualor · 18/05/2008 17:37

It's a ten pound taxi journey (one way).

OP posts:
cluelessnchaos · 18/05/2008 17:37

I cant believe you do that trip at anytime of day, take the week off you deserve it.

ElizabethBeresford · 18/05/2008 17:38

Ha ha! I wish you were my Mum when I was at school cluelessnchaos

VictorianSqualor · 18/05/2008 17:41

seeker, we used to live within walking distance from the school, but we couldn't get a new rental close by when our other rental ended, the school is lovely and Dd had previously been assaulted on numerous occasions at her old school so we didnt want to change her schools again.

We have two cars, so if DH's car broke, he'd use the other one, if it was illness or something MiL would help out, or one of us would be home with the other two DC's whilst the other did the journey on the bus.

I leave the house for the school run just before two and get home just after four blu.

I am amazed that you do this every day, is there any way you can make it easier on yourself,

VictorianSqualor · 18/05/2008 17:47

Yes, I could learn to drive

I'm lucky I don't normally do the school run in the mornings too tbh, we used to pay for a childminder for DP to drop DD off at for an hour before school as he has to leave her school area by 8am to get to work on time, luckily a friend now has her for an hour each morning and drops her at school instead.

OP posts:
bluefox · 18/05/2008 17:47

You have two cars? Do you not drive?

bluefox · 18/05/2008 17:48

Sorry - crossed posts.

cluelessnchaos · 18/05/2008 17:51

it would make a world of difference to you, i passed after dd2, silly question maybe why do you have two cars but only one driver?

hercules1 · 18/05/2008 17:52

Cant you just put the 4 week old in a sling?

VictorianSqualor · 18/05/2008 17:56

One is a company car.

Hercules, I had a CS and it still pulls on my scar if I carry him around too much, I do have a sling ready for this very reason but the buggy is easier atm.
