Reform winning big

1000 replies

Keirawr · 02/05/2025 06:21

Reform had a good night, winning county councils, probably will win a mayoral seat and won the parliamentary by election also.

You don’t have to be a Reform voter to acknowledge that they are taking votes off Labour. Or that they are being electorally effective.

No doubt the ‘basket of deplorables’ crowd will be along in a min with their usual quips calling reform voters names, having learned absolutely 0 from Brexit. Insult the voters at your peril.

These same people also totally miss the point that winning is winning. Feeling all moral and superior about ‘oh well, what will they actually do’ changes nothing.

Perhaps those who label everyone that wants immigration limiting as ‘racist’ Will think again. But likely not.

Or they're single issue voters who haven't thought through the implications, and have been misled into blaming immigrants for why things are so rubbish at the moment? I don't actually want to believe the alternative about so many of my fellow citizens.

The single issue voters are adding up... I refer you to exhibit one - Brexit.

Toootss · 02/05/2025 07:19

But unless you vote for Reform and get Labour worried they won’t do anything with immigration.

EasternStandard · 02/05/2025 07:20

They are growing in support whether Labour keep making excuses and losing it I guess we’ll see.

BallerinaRadio · 02/05/2025 07:20

thinktwice36 · 02/05/2025 07:12

@ColinOfficeTrolley you are proving my previous points unfortunately. Yes, the influx of numbers into some communities IS impacting them. Schools places, health services, housing. It matters to some parts of the electorate, even if it doesn’t to you.

The issue is governments not bothering to build more infrastructure, and also 'us' deciding we didn't want more people from Europe to come and work here

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 02/05/2025 07:20

Local elections tend to be a protest vote. As do parli-by-elections. Similar things happened with BNP a few years ago. They didn't last. I don't think this would be a reliable indicator of what would happen at a Westminster election.

TwoFeralKids · 02/05/2025 07:21

I would never vote Reform but there is a bit difference in our area since we have Roma live here. It is so much more dirty and rundown. Other immigrants seem fine.

SurfeitofLampreys · 02/05/2025 07:21

I agree, good night for Reform and further evidence that the two big parties have completely failed to affect any meaningful change or properly address people’s concerns.

Truly depressing that some people think Reform is the answer though.

Icanhearabee · 02/05/2025 07:21

CharSiu · 02/05/2025 06:46

I find the move to the right scary it’s happening over huge parts of Europe. Left leaning intelligentsia always look down on groups like reform. We all get one vote regardless of it we have researched parties and understand policies or have almost zero understanding. The refusal to tackle immigration is at the root of all this, I write this as the DD of immigrants who arrived in 1959.

I agree with this.

OlivePeer · 02/05/2025 07:21

thinktwice36 · 02/05/2025 07:13

@OlivePeer single issue voters or not, if that’s the issue that’s got them out to vote then their POV has to be at least listened to and not dismissed out of hand if you want their POV to change?

I remember during the run up to the Brexit vote, people saying they didn't care about the facts. That will stay with me forever. Someone who has shown they care more about immigration than the NHS is unlikely to change their mind when presented with data. That's why I find it frightening.

Alexandra2001 · 02/05/2025 07:22

What on earth has happened to the Tory vote??? its fallen off a cliff!

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 02/05/2025 07:22

Alexandra2001 · 02/05/2025 06:55

I think the bigger story here is the demise of the Tories...

@Alexandra2001 , well yes The Conservatives are set to receive a hammering but the we knew that they had fallen from grace with voters. The really big story (aside from the astonishing success of Reform) is the appalling results for Labour after only ten months in power.

BottleBlondeMachiavelli · 02/05/2025 07:22

Toootss · 02/05/2025 07:19

But unless you vote for Reform and get Labour worried they won’t do anything with immigration.

I keep hoping that’s what’s happening but even if that’s motivation for voters, Labour have done nothing helpful so far to address it.

mids2019 · 02/05/2025 07:22

I think one thing that is a factor is Islam and the dog whistle messages used effectively by reform. Many fear the diversity in our inner wards of our major cities and certainly many people do not want expansion of Islamic culture and social attitudes.within the UK e.g. entrenched misogyny.

Maybe reform is the party which tacitly aligns with reduction of non Christian faith the most and so has a following based on this. People may not be explicitly racist or anti non Christian faith but in the ballot box these biases may have a huge influence on voting patterns.

GustyBaloo · 02/05/2025 07:22

Coolasfeck · 02/05/2025 07:13

Well one of the reasons is the main stream media act as his personal PR and comms team. There is not a day when he’s not front page on a major title. It’s quite baffling as well as sinister. Trump showed us that people love celebrity. He wouldn’t be president if he hadn’t been on the Apprentice. Many people think big name = winner, and want to jump on board.

He wouldn't be president if he hadn't been on The Apprentice?

🤣🤣🤣

Fucking someone get me out of this nightmare.

HeySugarSugar · 02/05/2025 07:08

Don’t be so patronising. I’ve worked in and around politics and politicians all my life. There are some good politicians with integrity but there are many that aren’t. Farage definitely has none - he is entirely self serving. He is not remotely interested in “the people”, he is like his mate Trump and interested only in making money for himself and his very rich mates. It’s very frightening and I feel desperate for those people in this country who will genuinely suffer because of it.

In all fairness there are no political debates on social media these days where people from whatever side don't come away feeling patronised. You see it all the time people resorting to smearing and insults of anyone who has voted differently to them. I apologise if my comment that all politicians are slippery self serving power hungry liars has offended you, but that's my honest opinion of the state of politics.

Lex345 · 02/05/2025 07:23

I have sky news on at the moment and just watched the acceptance speech and then interview with Andrea Jenkyns and am actually gobsmacked; putting people in tents and jibing at someone's accent-and this person was elected in? Horrible to see this kind of attitude in the UK; they may as well have rocked up in MAGA hats

Catsandcheese · 02/05/2025 07:23

I'd also like to know about their policies. I don't believe they have any. What changes will they bring ? They will save the health service by reducing immigration but simultaneously make people pay for their health care? How is that helping anybody?

OlivePeer · 02/05/2025 07:23

GustyBaloo · 02/05/2025 07:19

Exactly! That's the fear.

ladymalfoy45 · 02/05/2025 07:23

My home city was shafted by the Tories in the "80s.Three industries decimated because it was 'cheaper' to produce coal, textiles ,and ceramics abroad.
As a country we no longer have the ability to revive these industries.
i fully understand why Reform are gaining momentum but they ,as a party, should cease with the racist rhetoric and provide practical and economical solutions to the reliance on overseas products that filled the gap after all our country's industry was decimated under the Conservative government.

She is a truly horrible person and the people who voted her in deserve her.

It's the people who didn't vote her in that got her I feel sorry for

ColinOfficeTrolley · 02/05/2025 06:55

Unfortunately, I am in the Runcorn and helsby constitutency. Reform won by 6 votes.

I am absolutely devastated.

The turnout was actually less than last year.

If the wankers who voted for them, think they are going to make brown people disappear, they're mistaken.

Reform will do absolutely fuck all for our borough.

I'm yet to hear one of their policies other than 'labour are rubbish'

I feel like moving.

The Labour candidate campaigned to close a hotel used to house asylum seekers - yet still lost. You should be directing your anger towards the appalling thug Mike Amesbury and a weak, spineless Prime Minister who lacks the balls to have an adult discussion about immigration. Those are the real reasons you have a Reform MP. The message to Keir Starmer is very clear.

ColinOfficeTrolley · 02/05/2025 07:24

ThejoyofNC · 02/05/2025 07:11

You've got to be joking? Have you read/watched any news AT ALL in the last year?

Of course I have, but you've not really answered my question. You've just came back with another question

thinktwice36 · 02/05/2025 07:24

@OlivePeer ignoring then by dismissing them as stupid and/or racist is not going to make them change their mind or disappear. What is the alternative?

The NHS is an outdated and mismanaged model that simply cannot cope with the demands placed on it in today and needs changing - but that’s a whole other thread…
