Epic levels of salmon shrink-flation?!

Is it just me or are the fillets of salmon you buy in the grocery stores (it was Sainsbury’s today) getting thinner by the minute? It has got to the point where I swear “two fillets” are now the size of one fillet just a few years ago. I don’t think they even give you enough salmon to feed two adults anymore.

I don’t buy it anymore. Ditto scampi - one small bag doesn’t even feed two people now.

vipersnest1 · 01/05/2025 21:55

Buy a side of salmon and either ask them to portion it or do it yourself - way cheaper.

Blackdow · 01/05/2025 21:56

I’ve stopped buying it unless I go to the fishmonger and just accepted that it will be expensive to buy three decent fillets to feed the three of us.

shellyleppard · 01/05/2025 21:57

@MulberryPeony my teenage son can happily eat a whole bag to himself 🙄

Fibrous · 01/05/2025 22:00

Same with tins of sardines! The tin is half the depth.

Itchybritches · 01/05/2025 22:02

I’ve stopped buying salmon as I was having to buy so many packs for one family meal!

Branster · 01/05/2025 22:03

Same with most bacon, even branded ones. So thin it'll pass for prosciutto soon.
There's economising and there's cheating.
They're all taking the piss quite frankly with pre-packaged food.

TheChosenTwo · 01/05/2025 22:04

Salmon fillets in a pack of 2 from a supermarket feeds my teenage son one meal.
If we want to feed more of us we buy a side of salmon.
They definitely seem to be much stingier portion sizes than they used to be but we don’t eat it often because dh doesn’t really love salmon, if I get the 2 pack it’s because we are only feeding ds that night (because the rest of us are on leftovers that won’t feed everyone or because we are all in and out at different times).

Laska2Meryls · 01/05/2025 22:06

Also tins of Tuna! They are so much smaller than they were.. (and more expensive 🙄)

Yes I think it particularly irks me that they’re selling them as a two portion serving but shrinking them down to a one person serving. Just do us a favour and sell them as a single fillet and be honest about the portions you are selling!

Yes the other day I opened one and it was like a tablespoon of tuna! I wondered if I had accidentally purchased some sort of tuna product for infants…

You sure it wasn't a tin of posh cat food? 😁

XenoBitch · 01/05/2025 22:14

Yes, I have noticed this too. You get one almost normal size piece, and the other is a bit from near the tail so a lot smaller. And I could easily have both for just one meal for myself.

I get a side of salmon when they are on offer, portion them up and freeze them.

PlutoCat · 01/05/2025 22:15

Morrison's were selling whole salmon at a really good price before Easter. I wish I had bought more than one, but I didn't have room in the freezer.

Anyone know what can be done with the head of a salmon? 😁 Fish stock is the only thing I can think of.

Germygerms · 01/05/2025 22:38

You're absolutely right! And it's so expensive now too (mind you isn't everything).
I tried frozen fillets recently and they're just not the same - they're somehow more dense??
We used to eat salmon once every one/two weeks on rotation. Now it's very much a treat. We had it the other day and the fillets looked small on my 6 & 7 year olds plate. My 6ft 4 17 stone partner polished his measley fillet off in a couple of mouthfuls 🥲

I stopped buying farmed salmon when I read about the horrible lives they have. I’m not vegetarian but strive to buy free range meats and ethically raised. The salmon farms are extremely unpleasant, even the ethical ones.

we decided to stop buying all farmed salmon and only get wild. This doubles the price but I just have to draw a line somewhere. We now have salmon far far less often.
