Will I get sacked from work?

Familydyn · 01/05/2025 07:16

I didn’t go work Monday and Tuesday as I had high temperature and felt very unwell. Forced myself to go in yesterday but felt like crap. On my way driving home get a call from my youngest school saying he has high temperature and feels sick. So I haven’t gone in today as I have no one to leave him with. I left a message at work saying I can’t come in as son is unwell. I don’t work Fridays do today is my last working day. I’m really worried I’m going to get in trouble. I was late last week as he was unwell again and had to drive to my family to leave him there. Couldn’t do that today as he wouldn’t let me leave his side. He’s 5. I feel like work might think I’m making it all up. They did see the state of me yesterday as I looked a mess

Phone your boss and tell them what you've said here.

Familydyn · 01/05/2025 07:18

@Nomoreidea policy is to leave a voicemail and email which I’ve done . I’m worried they might think I’m taking the piss

Emergency Parental leave.

Familydyn · 01/05/2025 07:19

@Eccythumpy i wrote in email I think we both have Covid. So will they take today as parental leave or another day of sickness?

Itchyblister · 01/05/2025 07:20

How long have you been there?

what is your absence rate? (honestly)

Temporaryname158 · 01/05/2025 07:20

you won’t be sacked if you have followed policy and this is a one off.

if you are late, calling in sick and taking parental leave every week that’s different.

make sure you aren’t late in future, if you have to drop them off somewhere, you have to get up earlier. Lateness doesn’t reflect well but everyone’s Ill sometimes

Familydyn · 01/05/2025 07:21

ive been there 2 years. Prior to this I’ve taken 3 days off

Eccythumpy · 01/05/2025 07:21

@Familydyn you need to tell them that you need Emergency Parental Leave.
Your workplace should have policies that cover this.

Can your son's dad care for him when he's off school?

In the past I have left him with him but he doesn’t feed him! I couldn’t leave him like this today especially as I feel like crap

I think that is really unlikely to cause a problem. But take today as emergency dependants leave rather than sickness leave for yourself - you aren’t ill

And you have a good relationship with your manager?

He doesn't feed him??

HermioneWeasley · 01/05/2025 07:26

Unlikely to be sacked if that’s your record and you have 2 years service. Since you’ve said you need today off because your son is unwell they are unlikely to put it down as your sickness. Do you know what your parental leave pay policy is?

if your childcare is otherwise fragile and you’re going to have to take time off at short notice and be late when making alternatives then you need to otherwise be a model employee - early, flexible, helpful, productive. Then theyll
know you’re not taking the piss when you have no choice.

I am ill. I forced myself to go in yesterday and would have gone in today if he wasn’t unwell

Op I recall your other thread a couple of days ago

you have some very very serious issues that need to be addressed and your absence rate will likely deteriorate. Go to a GP. Explain to your manager you have some health issues that are being addressed. You may need to get signed off

What about when you leave your son with him on his access days? Does he not feed him then either?

PicaK · 01/05/2025 07:51

You know it's not easy as a manager - because you have to manage stuff like this of someone not turning up. It's why they get paid more.
But that doesn't make them uncaring gits. Turn it round - how would you feel in their shoes? A bit aarghh because it's a ptoblem to manage. But filled with evil thoughts and plotting to get rid of them? Really? You'd want them to get fit and well, you'd sympathise cos they looked rubbish. You'd have a back to work meeting next week just to check all OK, nothing you can do.
2 years and 3 days is minimal - wouldn't you care about thus employee and just hope she can rest, kid recovers and gets over it this weekend.
Employee comes in (like you) showing appreciation of extra work they had to do - all good. Employee swans in, points to legislation with a tough, don't give a stuff manner - different thing

If you would have gone in but didn’t as your son is ill, and you told them you aren’t coming in as your son is ill then it’ll probably be unpaid parental leave rather than sick leave.

Familydyn · 01/05/2025 07:58

Thank you everyone. Sorry for the confusion I do live with my DH but I’m like a single parent as he doesn’t help with childcare it’s all on me. I was in such a state yesterday I kind of feel relieved to be home today. I think I might have Covid so don’t want pass my germs onto people. Do we even test anymore for Covid?

OP posts:
PicaK · 01/05/2025 08:01

Work in a school. No testing. No being off even if you do test and it's positive- unless you feel rubbish cos you're ill.

blackgreenandgrey · 01/05/2025 08:02

of course not. You took sick leave on Monday/Tuesday and emergency dependants leave on Wednesday. Both are your legal entitlement. Have you informed your manager about both absences?

BCBird · 01/05/2025 08:03

Out of interest OP , are you a teacher? I.am and we have to do voicemail. I'm.off today ill. Look after yourself.

BCBird · 01/05/2025 08:04

Just saw you work.in a school after asked.
