Will I get sacked from work?

Familydyn · 01/05/2025 07:16

I didn’t go work Monday and Tuesday as I had high temperature and felt very unwell. Forced myself to go in yesterday but felt like crap. On my way driving home get a call from my youngest school saying he has high temperature and feels sick. So I haven’t gone in today as I have no one to leave him with. I left a message at work saying I can’t come in as son is unwell. I don’t work Fridays do today is my last working day. I’m really worried I’m going to get in trouble. I was late last week as he was unwell again and had to drive to my family to leave him there. Couldn’t do that today as he wouldn’t let me leave his side. He’s 5. I feel like work might think I’m making it all up. They did see the state of me yesterday as I looked a mess

if you’ve been employed for over 2yrs you can’t just get the sack. Correct processes must be followed by employment law. The only thing they can do is put you on a performance plan or refer you to occupational health if attendance is an issue.

In any case, it seems like you are overthinking it. Is there a reason you feel so anxious about work? Do you have a shitty manager or culture?

This.

You do have a DH problem however.

Emergency Parental leave.

This really is not a thing in all businesses

You need a sick note if you are ill for more that 5 days and you are allowed emergency leave for sick dependants (also children) but this is usually unpaid. And the expectation is to sort something out in terms of childcare if the sickness is more than a few days. I lost my job when DC was in nursery and had frequent ear infections as I wasn't able to sort out someone else to look after DC. I think it's quite common here to dose up children with Calpol and send them to nursery or school as the system isn't really very supportive of working parents in such circumstances (esp if they do not have a support network to step in). I have friends in Europe who get 10 days paid leave if the child is ill. The UK is very far behind.

For a child we have 120 days paid a year. Never ever any questions asked. If a grandparent takes care of the sick child so the parent can work they get paid instead.

BumbleBeegu · 01/05/2025 13:11

@UnstablePelicanis that a typo? 120 days PAID parental leave each year??

Where on earth do you live? I can’t even comprehend how businesses can afford this 🤯 That’s 4 MONTHS paid leave to look after a sick child! 🤯

Why? What good is it to test these days? Just go back to bed and keep away from other people. The same as you would with any other virus.

Thoughtless, the only excuse would benot having enough money. It’s just a virus if you’re healthy, but for some people you’ll be giving them a life-threatening illness

Not a typo. Sweden. And that is 120 days per child, so could in theory be more days.

Wow! This is very impressive 👍🏻👍🏻

Your husband is a disgrace for failing to pull his weight. Even if the majority of childcare falls on you by choice, when someone is unwell he should be stepping up and helping out.

I think you need to reassess your relationship rather than concern yourself about your job. Your child is sick, they caught it off you. These things happen.

But you said you felt like a single parent. That's a big problem.

UnicornBubble · 01/05/2025 14:03

You’re entitled to sick leave and parental/dependents leave. The only way you could get into any “trouble” is if you have frequent absences for sicknesses etc, then your employer can go through processes to see whether you are able to continue working for them or not. But from what you said, you are rarely absent so shouldn’t need to worry about that.

PurplGirl · 01/05/2025 14:18

You’ll be fine. As long as you’ve followed the absence reporting procedure, you’re fine. In future, my advice is don’t be a hero - stay off long enough to recover properly yourself. Especially if it’s something likely to be contagious (esp stomach bugs), as your child will often go down with it too and it gives you a buffer. Parental leave is all well and good, but honestly, it’s just easier to stay home in sick leave together. (I’m not suggesting faking being unwell to look after your child - I’m saying that if you’re still feeling unwell, don’t be a hero, two birds, one stone).
Im sorry your OH is a deadbeat.

WhereIsMyJumper · 01/05/2025 14:24

Of course you’ll be fine OP.
Imagine how common it must be to have whole households go down with the same virus like dominoes. You catch it first and are ill, then your kid is ill and you have to look after them. I wouldn’t bat an eyelid if it was one of my staff.

Your husband is another matter though!

What country is that? It's zero paid days here. Guess somewhere in Scandinavia?

Adrinaxo · 01/05/2025 15:23

No people go in sick for weeks at a time on and off all of it as long as this isn't usual

Parental leave is often limited to time to make alternative childcare arrangements in an emergency ie first day off or collect from school and unpaid. Whether the employer will let this week pass depends on the nature of work/cover, op sickness record to date, company absence policy, whether op can take as al, unpaid or make up hours. At very least there may be a back to work meeting. Why will dh not step in occasionally to share the load? If not you need a back up plan.

It’s worrying how your own husband won’t feed his child. I hope someone tells social services, because he shouldn’t be near his child. It’s worrying that you are allowing him to live in the same house OP. I am guessing this is not the only problem either. It’s your responsibility as a parent to act on it. The blame is also on you. Poor child living like this.

Thank you everyone. Sorry for the confusion I do live with my DH but I’m like a single parent as he doesn’t help with childcare it’s all on me. I was in such a state yesterday I kind of feel relieved to be home today. I think I might have Covid so don’t want pass my germs onto people. Do we even test anymore for Covid?

You say "think I might have Covid so don’t want pass my germs onto people" but you went in yesterday and would have gone in today if it wasn't for the sick child? So you really don't care about passing germs, do you?

EleanorReally · 02/05/2025 08:37

it is not like you are new in the job
why on earth should you get the sack

TY78910 · 02/05/2025 09:29

You wouldn’t get sacked for this. It’s not persistent absence.

Also, if you take 2 days off sick and 1 day dependent / parental leave then they are two different types of absences. They would only be looked at together if there was a high level of overall absence, which you say there isn’t.

UnstablePelican · 02/05/2025 12:27

This. It’s definitely not about caring about passing it on.

And who cares about covid tests now anyway?

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 03/05/2025 19:43

If you're in the UK they absolutely won't and can't sack you for this, they might want to discuss what happened and they might even do this formally and say they will monitor your attendance in the future, but especially if you've previously only had 3 days off sick in 2 years then I'd be surprised. I worked in HR and we'd apply a formula to absences, generally we'd be worried about regular short absences (I'd call them the Monday club because normally its monday mornings off), people who are messing workplaces around or who have a long term condition they need support managing, or who can't cope with work tend to regularly (like every six weeks or less) have a day or two off sick. That isn't the case here.
Don't worry and focus on your own health and looking after your son. Working in a school you're bound to get ill, I can't believe you're the only person ever off sick there or ever off with childcare issues (happens at least termly at my kids school - and I'm not complaining because kids are germ factories!!)
