Is a size 14 big?

Just that really. Been somewhere between a size 12-14 for the past 20 years. Even when I lost two stone I still fit into my size 12 clothes. Now I’m about 12 stone at 5,7 and a solid 14.

I definitely feel better around the 10.5 stone mark. I’m really struggling to lose weight. Sometimes I look at myself and can see a roll around my belly or feel like my face looks bloated and neither of these things make me happy or confident.

Equally when I’m dressed well I think I look ok. I know it’s totally subjective but in your opinion is a size 14 what you’d consider large? I don’t think I look obscenely overweight but I definitely would look and feel better with a few stone off.

More about height. Im in a 12 jeans. But everyone (my kids/mum etc) is calling me fat. Im 12stone 5'4. Bmi about 27

MerlinsBeard1 · 01/05/2025 12:21

If you were 5'2 I'd say yes. It also depends where your fat is located, belly fat is unhealthier than say thicker thighs and hips. You sound fine to me.

MrsPlantagenet · 01/05/2025 12:23

Is size 14 big? Who cares. Size doesn't matter, only happiness matters.
Skinny toned bodies look good. Larger voluptuous bodies with rolls of fat look good.

What saccharine nonsense. Rolls of fat don’t look good and even more salient - it’s extremely unhealthy.

Yes exactly, personally. Not everyone is overweight as a size 14

A size 14 is the equivalent of a size Large.
Just because most of the UK are overweight or obese, and a size 14 is 'normal' because of these stats, it doesn't mean it's not overweight.

we as a nation have lost sight on what a normal healthy weight is. A size 14 in the 80s is not the same as a 14 now. As a nation we are getting bigger and by attitudes like yours and the 'body positivity' movement, a size 18 won't be classed as overweight soon as it's the norm.

im not saying the above is aimed at you personally, but as a whole, being a size 'large' will indicated that person is overweight.

RebeccaRedhat · 01/05/2025 12:25

Im and 10 and my bmi is overweight! When I was an 8 I felt too thin. I was a size 26 4 years ago - that was an awful feeling every second of every day.

Are you happy as you are? That's all that should really matter, but no, I would say nowhere near big x

Maybethisallthereis · 01/05/2025 12:27

To me yes because I am 5ft4 and a size 8 and weigh 56kg. However to me my size is normal for me…

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 01/05/2025 12:27

I'm 5' 8 and would feel large at 12 stone.

I'm currently 10st 10 which is just about right for me (between size 10-12)

That's me. I'm short and definitely fat.

You're taller so might well not be at all

Ankleblisters · 01/05/2025 12:29

Shop sizes are completely meaningless. I have clothes that range from UK size 6 to (one pair of baggy shorts) size 14 and they all fit me fine. I'm really short (5'2) and have a 'strong' build.
My mother is even shorter than me and wears a 12-14. She's not overweight and never has been.
I'd say for someone as tall as 5'7 size 14 definitely doesn't mean big. But it also depends on lots of things.
I don't think clothing sizes mean anything at all as long as you are healthy and comfortable.

JillMW · 01/05/2025 12:34

For me that is too heavy. I am overweight but wear a size 12 most brands. I have clothes in my loft from the 1980s when I was 3 stone lighter that are size 12, they are considerably smaller. Vanity sizing and the “ oh 14 is average” are unhelpful.
What is important are health indicators. It might be worth getting a health review at your gp if you are entitled to one. If not most gyms have equipment hat will give you a good indicator of percentage fat, muscle, bone density and fitness levels as appropriate for your age, If all is good then you can be confident that you are acting and exercising effectively. If not you can make changes

Emmz1510 · 01/05/2025 12:35

I would say it’s not, but it does depend on so many factors- your height, the individual clothes shops and how you actually feel in your own skin.

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 01/05/2025 12:35

Halve your carbs and fats and double your fruit and salads. Your skin will be clearer your hair will be glossier and you’ll have more energy.

EnhancedVampireEyeballs · 01/05/2025 12:37

I'm 5'7". Size 6, 7 and a half stone. I'd feel huge at anything larger. But I'm anorexic, so absolutely nobody should follow my lead with regards to weight.

Ihopeyouhavent · 01/05/2025 12:39

I went from an 8 to a 14 during Covid and went up to 83kg. I'm 5'4 and felt afwul so big, my tummy and face, i hardly recognised myself.

Thankfully im back to a size 8 and 57kg.

But's its all about perceptive.

StMarie4me · 01/05/2025 12:41

Only just noticed the OP’s reference to ‘obscenely overweight’ so over and out. How judgemental and rude.

feistyoneyouare · 01/05/2025 12:42

Annnd bingo. 🙄

Nottsandcrosses · 01/05/2025 12:42

Another point about the poster that mentioned weight blindness

That is absolutely true!

At a size 14 i would always say i carried it well but hated the way i looked in pictures and thought i "looked skinnier in person" however after loosing over 2 stone I can now see i was overweight, big all over, my face, the tops of my arms, my thighs and calfs even though my stomach was relatively flat.

People that are saying size 14 is not big have just adapted to the increase in standards over the years.

Im not judging, i was that size and many people around me are that size and bigger, however if we dont admit its an issue I worry the obesity epidemic will only get worse.

Bingo?

the world is getting fatter, and it's a problem. Sorry you're offended by that.

okydokethen · 01/05/2025 12:49

I’m obese and a size 14

SisterAgatha · 01/05/2025 12:49

I was a size 10 and still 11 stone with a BMI in the overweight range so really sizes don’t mean anything.

Arraminta · 01/05/2025 12:50

I'm 5ft 6" and at my heaviest I was 12 st 8lbs and a stout looking size 14. I told myself (often) that I looked really okay, sometimes even very nice, and that at least I was a dress size smaller than the UK average, also I was above average height.......all the usual stuff that you tell yourself.

Then I went and lost 3 stones on Mounjaro. Total game changer. I'm now a slim size 8/10 and look and feel infinitely better. I look younger, I move like a younger woman. Today, I look far better in just jeans, t-shirt and simple make up than I ever did before in my 'best' clothes and full on make up.

Movinghouseatlast · 01/05/2025 12:50

I think at your height it's not 'big', no.

I was size 14 at 13.5 stone, 5 foot 2. Now size 12 at 11 stone.

purplepenguindancing · 01/05/2025 12:52

I’ve noticed that women I know who were never particularly thin but have put on a few pounds as they got older, e.g. after menopause or after they had kids, often see 14 as their target size. That’s the size where they no longer feel fat. And 12 is spoken about as a dream size.

And then the women I know who are more into diet and fitness and have generally always been a bit more body conscious seem to see 10 as their target size and 8 as their dream size.

Not a judgement but just an observation! And I think shows that it’s all about individual perception.

Finallydoingit24 · 01/05/2025 12:52

The research shows that in terms of risk of premature death, those who fare best are people with BMI 27 interestingly enough. The OP is overweight but really not by much and I don’t think many doctors would be concerned unless she carried the weight on her stomach. If you contract a serious illness then being slightly overweight will stand you in good stead.

SapporoBaby · 01/05/2025 12:55

Being brutally honest, I think that it is generally a bit overweight but not massively so. It’s not small but it’s not very large. It’s curvy for sure.

Id say a 16-18 is big as that’s the last of the sizes carried by many mainstream shops. 14 is not quite there but is edging up to it.
