Smart watch

Are there just another gimmick or do they offer more than just surfing and making a phone call from you're watch. The problem with a smartphone is it the screen is very tiny and it would be a strain on the eyes and as for checking things like health benefits you can do that from a mobile phone so why do you need a Smartphone

If you don't think you need a smart watch then you're probably right.

I have one but I never surf or make phone calls from it. I find it useful to see alerts and the time without getting my phone out but the biggest reason is fitness and health data.

RichWithNoSelfControl · 28/04/2025 09:15

I have the Huawei GT3, use it for my workouts, tracking my steps, sleep and heart rate. It just looks like a normal watch so the screen is quite big, great for my terrible eyesight.

I find it extremely useful

noblegiraffe · 28/04/2025 09:24

I’ve had an Apple Watch for years and would never go back to a normal watch.

The gameification of exercise (closing rings) is the only thing that has ever worked to make me exercise regularly and be aware of how much/little I am moving. I don’t carry my phone on my person at all times so this isn’t the same.

The messaging is really useful. I use it for reminders all the time. I quite often use it to ask Siri a quick question.

It’s so handy. You can’t surf the internet on it though.

cadburygorilla · 28/04/2025 09:32

I have an apple watch for safety reasons. I live alone and it makes me feel safer that it could contact the emergency services if anything happened to me. It has to be charged every day though which is annoying

lawsly · 28/04/2025 10:45

Like @noblegiraffe, my watch is how I finally managed to build regular exercise into my life.

DecafDodger · 28/04/2025 10:54

the main benefit of my watch is that I get my messages and call notifications on the watch. My phone is normally in my bag and on silent. Watch allows me to see if I need to dig it out or not.
I also use my watch for wake up alarm, and as it's a Garmin, for exercise.

MemorableTrenchcoat · 28/04/2025 11:00

No one is surfing the internet on a smart watch. They offer health and fitness features that a phone can’t do alone.

weareallqueens · 28/04/2025 11:38

I only really use mine for exercise but because my texts and calls appear on it (I can’t answer them) it’s quite useful for work (teacher) as I’d know if my kids’ school was trying to get in touch.

This. 👆
Plus recording swims and exercise classes.
I use the timer all the time - cooking, dying hair, soaking plants in water, making sure I get to appointments on time. As you can change the text size, I don't need specs to read the time. It also displays WhatsApp messages.

ShowMeTheSushi · 28/04/2025 12:12

I was skeptical at first, my husband got me a smart watch since I’m always misplacing my phone. The ping feature is a lifesaver. I prefer tapping to pay, and it saved me when my phone was snatched, was able to put it on lost mode and make emergency calls. It also alerts me when I get calls/messages, even if my phone’s MIA. I use it for exercise. Oh and the walkie talkie feature comes in handy when you’re on the toilet and out of loo roll! 😂

What watch do you have that records swimming please? I used to have Fitbit Versa’s but after around a year they all gave up. I’m looking for a smartwatch that does everything including swimming. I’m a bit scared of spending loads and then it giving up in the pool.

logicisall · 28/04/2025 12:46

@PineappleChicken I have an Apple watch. It's an older Series 6 model but gets software upgrades. The activities tracker can record different types of exercise eg Pickleball, core class, pilates, indoor or outdoor walks/runs, rowing/cross trainer/cycle use, weights etc. In swimming mode, you can input the length of the pool and it tells you which stroke you used and distance you swam. It also tells you calories used and heart rate while exercising.

weareallqueens · 28/04/2025 17:04

Garmins also record swimming.

I actually purchased a smart watch. I got it online and when I tried it on it looked ridiculous on me because I have very thin wrist I didn't think it suited me so I'm sending it back. In hindsightthink smart watches are just a fad and and not worse the money and regular watches are much better

OP posts:
BitOutOfPractice · 06/05/2025 19:51

I wouldn’t be without my Apple Watch now.

i use it for

  • alarms. It buzzes on my wrist to wake me but doesn’t disturb DP
  • control podcasts eg volume, go back 30 seconds, play record exercise. Like PPs have said, it really motivates me to exercise. And I like to monitor heart rate etc
  • i can make and take calls on it when I’m out running. That means I don’t need my phone which makes me feel safer
  • it can locate my phone when I have put it down in the house
  • I can quickly check all sorts of things like appointments and emails
  • it can direct me when I’m walking somewhere without me having my phone out (theft risk)
  • check the weather before I go out
  • oh yeah and it Tells the time.

I certainly don’t use it for internet browsing.

And I certainly don’t think they are just a fad.

I know two people who went to their doctors after alerts from their watches who were then diagnosed with heart conditions.

Edited

I have thin wrists too and my smart watch looks fine. I don’t agree that they’re a fad, and nor would I say regular watches are much better. A regular watch wouldn’t have detected my mum’s atrial fibrillation, for a start. It turns out she has a more serious heart condition, and her Apple Watch allowed them to catch and treat it early.

PerkyOchrePeer · 06/05/2025 20:00

Just dance and research and somebody said this about them

Smart watches as they are now are awful products. They suck as watches, they require daily or at best bi-weekly charging, the faces and straps are ugly and they don't have the tactile pleasure of a regular watch.

You do you then.
Most of us find them dead handy. Even those of us with skinny wrists.

noblegiraffe · 06/05/2025 20:05

My smart watch is great, so handy, I'd never go back to a regular watch. Regular watches are so pointless. Literally all they can do is tell the time and my phone can do that.

A watch which prevented my mum having a stroke, or worse, is not an awful product. Daily charging is a very small price to pay. Don’t be so narrow-minded.

PerkyOchrePeer · 06/05/2025 20:06

Before smart watches were invented people managed okay. I have never had any desire to track my fitness but I just thought because everybody was wearing smart watches I thought I'd get one too. I have a regular body MOT at the doctor so why would I want a stupid SmartWatch to tell me what the Professionals could tell me

You sound more stupid with every update.

Seawolves · 06/05/2025 20:08

I like mine but I wish I could find one that records the steps I take while pushing my little one in his wheelchair. If I want it to count steps then I have to push one handed which isn't always possible.

I’m confusioned! My Apple Watch will never be equal to a Rolex, aesthetically, but most of us who own a smart watch don’t expect them to be. A smartwatch is functional and wearable technology. It’s clearly not for you, you’d already dismissed them out of hand before you even bought one, so I’m not sure why you bothered really.

Are you drunk?

As my mum always says, “If everybody is jumping in the fire, are you going to follow too?”
