Smart watch

Are there just another gimmick or do they offer more than just surfing and making a phone call from you're watch. The problem with a smartphone is it the screen is very tiny and it would be a strain on the eyes and as for checking things like health benefits you can do that from a mobile phone so why do you need a Smartphone

I have to say, you do sound a bit daft op. Do you work for the wristwatch marketing board or something? I mean people managed ok before electricity, or the wheel, or any invention. and nobody Is stopping you having an analogue watch.

you’ll have to prise my Apple watch off my cold dead wrist.

PerkyOchrePeer · 08/05/2025 01:03

Ive now become very observant and see loads wearing them. Personally i think they liok hideous. My mother had health issues but lived to 93. She didnt have any fancy device tellung her how to be healthy. She just got on with her life and went to the doctor when required. She never had cancer or a stroke she had TB when she was 18 and smokee 40 a day for years. She had breathing problems as a result of the TB but thats all.

That’s nice @PerkyOchrePeer

I love my smartwatch. I think it looks pretty, does what I want it to and I will continue to wear it.
I am happy to hear your mother was so healthy.

Zanatdy · 08/05/2025 08:06

Very strange thread. Smart watch too big for your wrist, now you’re slating them as useless. Many people find them very useful. If you don’t want to track exercise or be alerted to any irregular heartbeats etc, why even buy one in the first place?

Just because you don’t believe your mother would have benefited from a smart watch, doesn’t mean they are an unnecessary gimmick. I’ve already explained to you how they helped my mother avoid serious heart issues. Why can’t you accept this?

What watch do you have that records swimming please? I used to have Fitbit Versa’s but after around a year they all gave up. I’m looking for a smartwatch that does everything including swimming. I’m a bit scared of spending loads and then it giving up in the pool.

Now I have an Apple Watch but before this I had one from Décathlon.

They're a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

You don't need one.

My mum’s atrial fibrillation didn’t exist? That’s news to me.

Another vote for love my smartwatch and would replace immediately if it broke. I have an Apple Watch (with what I think is a lovely strap). At a glance it tells me where my next meeting is, the weather so I know if to pick my coat, the date and how much I’ve moved that day.

It’s invaluable for pinging my misplaced phone, and for screening calls / texts in meetings at a moments glance without having to noticeably check my phone.

It also links with my life insurance so it’s cheaper if it registers more activity. It’s a much better step counter than my phone which I don’t always carry so is encouraging me to walk and exercise more.

I also don’t care if you or other people want to use or wear them, but I feel lost without mine

PerkyOchrePeer · 08/05/2025 08:33

They make you very anxious and you could become a hyperconduct always thinking about yourself and your health checking every day checking Every Minute checking every hour sorry I've got better things to do with my time if I need to go to the doctor about anything I go to the doctor

No, they don’t make you anxious or turn you into a “hyperconduct”. It’s quite obvious you don’t have a clue about smartwatches or how they operate.

um...well how about you don't get a smartwatch then? Why on earth are you posting? Has someone pinned you down and strapped a watch on you?

Gosh that sounds risky. That poor lord! I suppose you'd know a few, being a peer and all.

Interl0per · 08/05/2025 08:43

I think it's MN trawling for quotes because they need to advertise a smart watch in "Swears By" ;-)

PerkyOchrePeer · 08/05/2025 09:05

People can talk to me until they are blue in the face about the benefits of a smart watch. I am not interested and I'm not going to buy one ever again and the one I did buy I have sent back and I have been promised to full refund so there's no point in me contributing to this thread anymore goodbye

You can talk to me until you’re blue in the face about how ugly and useless smartwatches are, but I’m not interested and I’m always going to have one. Bye!

So why bother with the post? I have a Garmin and only take it off to charge it. I use it for running, weight training etc. Really helps me track progress and understand what race times I’m aiming for.

Deerrobin · 08/05/2025 09:16

You don’t want one, don’t get one.

I use my Apple Watch primarily to read my blood glucose levels from my continuous glucose monitor (I’m a type one diabetic), couldn’t be further from a ‘fad’ ‘stupid’ or something to ‘make me anxious’. Sure, I managed before this tech but this has improved my glucose control beyond compare, allowed me to have two healthy diabetic pregnancies and to improve my athletic performance considerably. Couldn’t give a shit how stupid or otherwise it might look on my thin wrists.

PerkyOchrePeer · 08/05/2025 09:24

smartwatches can contribute to health anxiety for some individuals. The constant flow of data, especially for those with pre-existing health conditions or anxieties, can lead to increased stress and worry. The ability to continuously monitor health metrics, like heart rate or sleep, can inadvertently trigger a cycle of over-checking and concern, potentially leading to unhealthy habits or increased stress.
