Anyone else watching it on Bbc 2?

Bringing up memories of being around 21 and how very young I really was.
Film seems so basic, watching it now

I ache to go back to those days

Love the soundtrack. Leo was miscast for me, but I do love it.

fashionqueen0123 · 27/04/2025 22:41

yup soundtrack is amazing used to play it over and over in my bedroom

Fortheloveofthenineties · 27/04/2025 22:43

Ooh and I remember Yeke yeke as part of the soundtrack, such a tune

Baby faced Leo

No mobiles/internet shown so far

Leo just didn't fit the book for me, but I could park it...

murasaki · 27/04/2025 22:56

But I am well known amongst friends for being an arse if I've read the book before the film. I have how it should be in my head. Much better the other way round.

Mumdiva99 · 27/04/2025 22:56

I'm not watching now but.did watch a few years ago.
I remember reading it at Uni. Around the same time I read Trainspotting and High Fidelity and Notes from a Small Island. Aah I would like to go back and do it all again.
Leo looks Sooooo young.
Oh to have youth again.

BrandyandGinger · 27/04/2025 22:58

I love that film. I hadn't read the book and I thought Leo was very good in the film. He was the right mix of naive and cocky. Robert Carlyle and Tilda Swinton were very memorable in their smaller roles.

CigarettesAndLoveBites · 27/04/2025 22:58

If IRC it should have been Ewan McGregor instead of Leo as Richard. I think they went with Leo to appeal to the American market. He's not right at all and I always imagine Ewan in the role when I watch it.

Yes, he had a massive fight with Danny Boyle about it. They didn't speak for years.

RitaAndFrank · 27/04/2025 23:01

Loved the book. Hated the film.
Richard (main character) was not American and he did NOT shag Sal or nick the French girl off her boyfriend.

ThDanielDay · 27/04/2025 23:02

Bottled it by not giving you to McGregor, the video game scene is fucking cringe

10/10 nostalgia, no notes

Jabtastic · 27/04/2025 23:03

I didn't know that about Ewan McGregor and Danny Boyle! I feel real nostalgia for the book and film and I'll definitely watch it on IPlayer, thanks OP!

One of those studio interferences that miss the whole point of the book and the lying in the sand "multiverse" scene which was the whole point of the ennui soul searching journey of Richard

Moominstar · 27/04/2025 23:06

Hi op what would you do differently / do now if you went back to those days?

herbalteabag · 27/04/2025 23:07

I didn't know it was on. I loved the book which I must have read in my mid twenties. The film wasn't as good but I still watched it. I don't know if I will enjoy either in the same way now but I'll still look it up.

Exactly. In the book Richard was bumbling, awkward and typically British. He was not a pretty American fuckboy. The whole film was a sell out to the American market and as you say, completely missed the point and glossed over all the deeper beauty of the book.
the soundtrack was amazing though and reminds me of when Dh and I got together 😍

Fortheloveofthenineties · 27/04/2025 23:10

I read the book too, but still liked Leo in it

This also reminds me of a hedonistic youth!

maybe I need to buy a flight to Thailand and relive it…..but what about the kids 🤔😂

Big question…! So many things I would have done differently…maybe…or maybe not as the whole course of my life would have changed
I really do ache to go back though

How about you?

We all ache to go back, surely!
Film was OK.
Book was excellent.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 27/04/2025 23:17

Oooooh I loved the soundtrack. It was the first time I’d ever gone to the pictures by myself- I was at a uni open weekend.

I loved the book so wasn’t mad for the film, although I watched it quite recently and thought it wasn’t as terrible as I’d remembered. I think I’ll read the book again, I thought it was wonderful as a teenager.

Ilikeviognier · 27/04/2025 23:18

Me too….i went to Thailand in the early naughties and did The whole ko Phan Yang thing. What a soundtrack too! I’ve been watching it again tonight but got to go to bed otherwise I’ll never get up for the school run in the morning! Life in the fast lane nowadays. 🤣🤣
