To think that most people don’t really want equality - they just want their group to win?

Everyone talks about wanting fairness and equality but I honestly think most people only want it when it benefits their side. Once they get an advantage, suddenly fairness isn’t a priority anymore. AIBU to think that for a lot of people, “equality” is less about true fairness - and more about securing a better spot for themselves?

it does seem that way for a few in society

Definitely some do. But lots of us want a more level playing field and spend our work lives and home lives trying to make the world a better place.

Flytrap01 · 27/04/2025 20:28

but the thing is most of society is never level or equal to begin with, because there will always be someone better, smarter, different etc

I dont think that many people have the "us and them" attitude.
Trying to force this division doesn't help anyone.

I think most people want equality without suffering any detriment themselves. In many cases that’s impossible. I don’t think it’s cynical on their part, so much as wishful thinking (or a lack of thinking).

Many also want equality of opportunity only when they no longer need opportunities themselves.

I am probably guilty of all of those things.

I think that’s true and people worry about certain initiatives being executed imperfectly and disadvantaging them.
