Why does every female radio DJ sound like an ASMR channel now? (light hearted)

What even is ASMR supposed to do — help you relax, tingle, fall asleep? Brilliant. Except I’m just trying to hear the name of the artist, not be lulled into some weird fake hypnosis.
Not everything needs to be whispered, husky, or said with a weird fake smile. Sometimes I just want to know who’s singing. That’s it. No trance induction required.

I like a robust female voice personally - bonus points for a regional accent. Also very annoying when they don’t name that tune.

giddyauntie123 · 27/04/2025 20:26

I swear it's got worse over the years, please just stick to your normal talking voice

Yes I’ve noticed this, you can almost hear the spit moving about as they talk and it gives me the ick, I’m not sure why!

Thwart · 27/04/2025 20:38

Thank god Marianne Hobbs is off 6music. She was the worse for this. All breathy and aroused - bleh!

IMustDoMoreExercise · 27/04/2025 20:44

Absolute Radio have the best female djs.

giddyauntie123 · 27/04/2025 23:47

@Changethenamey It gives me the absolute ick too.
Stop being so breathy and dribbly — you’re talking into a microphone, not giving it a blow job. It's embarrassing.

It's only female radio hosts that do this?

You liken a professional radio announcer to a woman giving a blow job?

Your internalised misogyny is showing.

Embarrassing is, indeed, the word.

Gymnopedie · 28/04/2025 01:48

Mylene Klass on ClassicFM, Friday and Saturday nights. If she isn't drawling she's doing the breathy, aiming for seductive, voice.

Monty27 · 28/04/2025 01:53

Do you think they're being seductive? 😂

BurntBroccoli · 28/04/2025 02:37

Yes to this!
Angela Griffin’s voice with massively deep intakes of breath after every sentence.

Sophie Ellis Bexter sounds like a little girl with a flat but squeaky voice. Not a DJ voice at all.

Jo Whiley on the other hand has a lovely radio voice.

ObelixtheGaul · 28/04/2025 04:02

Well, didn't we have decades of the men on the radio doing that transatlantic drawl beautifully taken the piss out of by Paul Whitehouse and Harry Enfield as Smashey and Nicey? 'Poptastic, I'm doing this for charridee'.

giddyauntie123 · 28/04/2025 08:21

Yes, Jo Whiley has a lovely radio voice
I find Cerys Matthews does it a bit now too and she didn't previously

There was someone covering Sara Cox this evening- very nice voice whoever it was. Cheerful, nice timbre.
