Pigs in human form

I've just been for a walk around the unique, beautiful Devil's Punchbowl - National Trust property, part of our common heritage, home to many vulnerable species, and I must have walked past 30-40 plastic dog poo bags hanging on gorse bushes or left by the path. Why? Just why? Why do YOU do this? What would it take for you to stop?

Dog owners are disgusting

What I don't get is that surely the most unpleasant part of all is picking the dog turd up on the first place and getting it in a bag. If you are prepared to do that then surely it's not that hard to carry it to the dog poo bin or even home?

This is what completely baffles me about this behaviour as well. If you have no intention of binning it why pick it up in the first place?

At least dog waste on the floor will decompose. Hanging it in a plastic bag is just actively going out of your way to make matters worse.

Dog owners are disgusting

It's the bad dog owners that give the rest of us a bad name.

No, they are not. There are plenty of decent, responsible dog owners. The ones who do pick up and bin the poo, the ones that exercise and train their dogs, and the ones that care for their environment. As with most things, it is the few who don't do the right thing, that give the rest a bad name.

Oilofeveningprimrose · 28/04/2025 05:56

I thought this was going to be about pigs wearing human clothing. No idea why I thought that 😕

Who else is chucking bags of shit into the bushes? Random passers by? Goldfish owners? Nope. It is 100% dog owners. They're disgusting.

BadgeronaMoped · 28/04/2025 07:24

I would find this slightly less annoying if the bags were biodegradable. Such a dirty, selfish thing to do.

DUsername · 28/04/2025 07:25

This absolutely grinds my gears. I would a million times rather they just left the dog shit because at least it would eventually decompose. I counted 12 of those bags on an alleyway near my house - we call it dog shit alley for obvious reasons - recently.

I think these morons tell themselves that they'll pick it up on their way back and then 'forget'.

I will say though, just because 100% of poo bags are left by dog owners it doesn't mean 100% of dog owners do it. I see plenty picking their poo up or carrying the bags. The problem is so many people own dogs now that it only takes a small percentage to leave shit lying around for it to make a noticeable difference to our environment.

Sevenamcoffee · 28/04/2025 07:27

It makes so little sense, in that why wouldn’t you just leave it on the ground if you can’t be bothered. So I’ve always thought it must be that they intended to pick it up on the way back but forgot or went home a different way. So if dog poos at beginning of walk where there are no bins, rather than carry it round all the way they have left it for the way back. I’m not condoning it but I don’t think it’s generally an intention to randomly hang it in a bush and leave it there. It is vile though whatever.

Reason 3,457 why I hate dog owners.

Please don’t tar us all with the same brush! I clean up after my dogs and don’t hang the bag on trees, I take it home.
I don’t take my dogs to cafes or other ‘human’ places. I simply walk them on public paths and respect other people by keeping my dogs away from them.
I agree that there are hoards of dreadful dog owners out there, but some of us decent people do still exist, I promise.

Dog owners are disgusting

Some people dog owners are disgusting.

fixed that for you.

i am a dog owner. I have never failed to pick up and carry out. If that means carrying a warm poo for miles or in my car that’s what you do, I come prepared with a sealable bag and Tupperware in the boot. With people like this if it wasn’t poo it would be food wrappers, cans etc, they are selfish, ignorant people who in this case happen to own dogs. It doesn’t mean dogs should be banned for responsible owners, it means people should stop being dicks. If you have any ideas for that let’s talk about it, I’ve found calling people out doesn’t work before you try that.

unsync · 28/04/2025 08:23

@Ablondiebutagoody Obviously your reading comprehension is not all it could be, so to put it in your vernacular, it is not 100% of dog owners, but it is 100% a certain type of dog owner.

Lavender14 · 28/04/2025 08:26

This drives me crazy! Why bother to go to the effort of lifting it if you're just going to bag it and then litter with it anyway?! It defies sense!

BatFeminist · 28/04/2025 08:29

Round my way there are regular discussions on social media re this: the upshot being that too many dog owners believe that if there are no poo bins or they are full that it is the council or landowners fault, and they are under no obligation to take it home.

I have a dog and I bag and bin. But that is the excuse given. Entitled and irresponsible people

Our village installed a load of poop stations at the beginning and end of various popular dog walking paths. There are bags available and a bin.
We still get bags left in random places. It's just disgusting. The next bin is never more than 500 metres away or so. Surely they can carry the bag for that length of time? Don't get a dog if you don't want to pick up its poop and take it to a bin.

It's a village in the Alps and in winter lots of dog owners just let their dogs shit in the snow and then cover it up with snow. When the snow melts in the spring you get a disgusting mess of dog shit all over the verges.
It's likely that the majority of the mess is caused by tourists with dogs because the problem all but goes away between the tourist seasons and there are only locals there. So many people just don't care and especially not if they don't live there.
