You are given the power to make three things illegal. What would you choose?

I know people will post silly things that irritate them but think seriously. What three things would you make completely illegal right now?
Here's mine:

  1. The right to buy your council house
  2. Owning more than one property.
  3. Not keeping your cat contained in your own home. With hefty fines if it is caught killing any wildlife.

Many scientists in the uk including those that work for RSPB are cat owners. It’s not a stretch to say their research could be biased by wanting to find evidence to support that cats aren’t a problem. Sure, there are bigger environmental problems, but if cats are continuing to kill the remaining decimated garden bird population then it’s a problem. It would be slightly less of a problem if there were no overarching environmental problems.
It’s hogwash to say cats only kill the “doomed surplus”. There isn’t a surplus and I see with my own eyes how they’ll lie in wait for the bird parents to return to the nest to feed the chicks & pounce. If a cat is around when chicks fledge the nest they’ll simply kill every single one of them, strong or weak. It’s just what cats do. Maybe it is a good idea for cats to be kept indoors during nesting season.

I'm guessing you'll believe no source, however credible, that doesn't agree with you "because they might be cat owners" so it's probably best to leave it there.

I’m guessing that you take studies as gospel and don’t realise that studies have bias ( either due to the charities donator base or even the researchers themselves). You should try critical thinking sometime.

And yes if I was a cat lover and bird lover and rspb started saying “cats are a problem , they need to be kept indoors etc”, then I’d probably be disinclined to support that charity . It’s called not biting the hand that feeds you.
I like cats , I don’t own any, they do kill a lot of garden birds, strong or weak.

Birds have been PROVEN to kill huge numbers of worms. I've seen it with my OWN EYES. Perhaps something should be done about that?

Wow, you've got me there. My mind is totally changed. Have you thought about writing a paper yourself? I think people would really like to hear where you're coming from with this, it's important they hear this.

Just a tip - don't use emojis in the article, they make you seem illiterate and undermine your argument. Use words instead. Get a grown up to help you.

  1. smoking/vaping of any kind
  2. dogs in restaurants and shops (unless legally registered guide dogs)
  3. People being able to stay in social housing once they can afford to rent privately
  4. Just for good measure - reversing the law that says infant formula can’t be discounted
MonteStory · 28/04/2025 17:33

You really think professional scientists aren’t able to mitigate personal bias? Charming to refer to their work as hogwash - what was your last published paper about, perhaps we can all critique that?

Two things can be true at once - cats kill birds and this would be reduced by keeping them in at dawn and dusk
AND
Cats do not pose a SIGNIFICANT threat to the general population of birds

They DO post a significant threat if the garden bird population has already been decimated by other factors over the years.
It’s like saying poachers aren’t a threat to a species because it’s more about habitat decline. Do we wait until species become endangered and the genetic pool reduced before taking action ? Well, yes, that is typically what happens - but it shouldn’t. If cats kill a lot of birds then let’s do something about it to help the already struggling Uk garden bird population.
And yes, scientists can try to mitigate bias but if you think studies are without bias then you’re misinformed.

  1. Farting on public transport
  1. Singing in the rain
  1. The movie the sound of music

😎

Brutalass · 28/04/2025 18:24

I don't have a problem with cats per se ... (although I'd prefer if my neighbours cats didn't use my garden as a toilet 🙄)

I do, however, have a massive problem with

1.Animal cruelty of any kind

2.Snooking (sniffing running snot back up the nostrils very loudly - just blow your nose already!!)!
3.Bullying - at any age!

  1. Alcohol and cigarettes.
  1. Reproducing or owning an animal without first having to pass an intelligence test, prove you're financially secure enough to take care of it, attend a course relevant to whatever you're spawning/owning, and in the case of animals, have mandatory insurance, a licence with strict conditions and endorsements.
  1. Doodles and other mongrels purposefully bred and given silly names.

I'm having 4 because I agree with the poster above about child maintenance. There should be very serious consequences for parents who don't pay for their children.

MAFSsaddict · 28/04/2025 19:08
  1. puppy farms already are illegal but I would make it illegal to buy any puppy not from a registered breeder (and strict controls on the criteria of what constitutes a registered breeder. Left to my own devices I’d say no puppies at all until the shelters are cleared but appreciate that is extreme.
  2. ban on Botox, or a milder version anyone under 40.
  3. KFC! Re chicken welfare!
NB: I am not a vegan but we are not meant this much chicken on demand!

Cyclists pay extra? Motorist have to pay VAT on the purchase of their new car, vehicle tax and taxes on petrol/diesel. I suspect the amount of road tax cyclists pay towards roads, pales into insignificance, compared to motorists and especially owners of new cars?

Road tax doesn’t exist. But roads are paid for out of general taxation so all taxpayers regardless of whether they own a car or not pay for roads. If drivers did pay for roads they would pay a lot more as actually they are subsidised by general taxation. That’s for road building and maintenance. Before you get to the impact of pollution. They can also use motorways which cyclists cannot. Thees a stat somewhere of how much active travel infrastructure generates - it’s something like for every £1 spent it saves £5 die to pollution reduction but health benefits, reduced congestion, spending etc. But the proportion spent on roads versus cycling and walking infrastructure is gargantuan. If it were up to me I’d tax drivers per mile driven for any journey under 5 miles unless they really couldn’t travel by other means. So many short journeys driven when they could be travelled walking, cycling or public transport. Particularly in cities and towns.

Runssometimes · 28/04/2025 19:23

@BlueandWhitePorcelain also dorm forget petrol cost duty has not risen for many years unlike almost everything else.
