Lovely smelling homes

How do some homes smell so nice! Sort of across between clean laundry and freshly baked cakes?! I hate anything scented so don't like buying diffusers etc. We do washing several times a week and our home never smells like this!

I'm interested in this too!!

I like nice, expensive scented candles & i think airing the house out a lot is probably a good plan!

HappiestSleeping · 26/04/2025 23:42

Don't have a labrador. Mine rolled in something earlier and currently stinks. 🫢

I think it’s a combination. Fresh air, windows open every day, washing fabrics regularly eg cushions and throws, no pets. And not using synthetic air fresheners or plug ins. Natural scented cleaning products, not lots of fabric conditioner.

I'd love a nice scented reed diffuser, the ones I buy are usually awful - either too strong or too chemically.

DumpedByText · 27/04/2025 01:03

Windows open and Valentte diffusers. Reasonably priced and they smell amazing.

Same here. I have a few of those diffusers
If I give people a card or present they always comment how nice it smells
I also burn wax melts which I know some people hate, and I have windows open most of the day

wash coats, throws, cushion covers often to get rid of any cooking smells (open plan)
Hoover and clean regularly
method rhubarb floor cleaner

It’s fresh air rather than smellies here. My extractor fan vents to outside which may or may not make a difference.

isitmeamithedrama · 27/04/2025 01:41

Open windows at every opportunity, wash linen like bedding, cushions covers throws etc regularly.
for fresh, not over powering , reed diffusers I use one from dunelm called bergamot.

Iamwearingmyglasses · 27/04/2025 01:46

Open windows makes a big difference in terms of freshness. I’ve recently become a ‘windows open every morning’ person I can I smell and feel the house is just fresher in general.

bibliotek · 27/04/2025 01:52

I really wish there was an upmarket plug in diffuser which diffused essential oil aromas. I find the water/steam diffusers draw too much attention and the aroma doesn’t persist.

coxesorangepippin · 27/04/2025 01:54

Windows open lots

Iamwearingmyglasses · 27/04/2025 02:00

Hide little essential oil dapped cotton balls in cushion cases was another one I read a while back! Still yet to try it..

Loveautumnhatewinter · 27/04/2025 02:29

Neal’s yard room sprays.
Puressential rooms sprays. Both very natural and not synthetic - anything synthetic gives me migraines.

I also sprinkle citrus essential oils onto my rugs - helps the house smell ‘fresh’. And open the windows!

Everyone is noseblind to their own house

SallyDraperGetInHere · 27/04/2025 02:43

Don’t have teenagers!

HiRen · 27/04/2025 03:09

Clean everything: carpets, curtains, sofas, cushions, bedding. Everything washed regularly and replaced when necessary. Housework kept on top of. Laundry not piling up. Cooking smells banished. Buns emptied. And yes windows open as much as possible.

violetcuriosity · 27/04/2025 03:35

People always walk in and say my house smells nice, I don’t do anything particularly special. Some of the things I do that might help- Bleach toilets regularly, zoflora diluted with water when I mop the floors, occasionally dry clothes on the airer inside/on radiators, cook any heavy scented food with the windows open, windows and back door open as often as possible, at least once a day. I never use plug ins or candles/diffusers because my partner thinks they’re toxic x

catgirl1976 · 27/04/2025 06:12

Purdey and Figg cleaning products
Valentte wax burners (I hide them but they smell great) plus Valentte room sprays
M&S apocothrapy calm reed diffusers
lots of fresh air

ToysRus56 · 27/04/2025 07:14

Ive woken up to this hive of absolute gems!! We never purposefully open our windows so this will definitely help. I feel I clean all the time but I don't tend to clean rugs that sort of thing...I did once buy a reed defuser but it was just horrible - it was a pretty nice one which I hid in a corner in the hall but that precise corner ended up smelling like a teenage boy about to go on a date and had just discovered deodorant. Not exactly subtle. Interesting, would never occur to me to wash coats or cushions covers. We went into a friend's home yesterday and it just smelt wonderful. I even peaked to see if I could see what washing detergent they were using 😂 I don't think our home smells bad, just not like that

Few drops of vanilla essence on a baking tray in warm oven (after you’ve switched it off but it’s cooling down).

FaceOrf · 27/04/2025 07:35

Use a diffuser with essential oils. I love lime oil and there’s nothing synthetic about it.

One3C · 27/04/2025 10:10

I burn sandalwood incense. The fragrance lasts for hours especially for the porch which I can't leave open.

TheSandgroper · 27/04/2025 10:18

Well, if you never open your windows, your house will not smell nice, that’s for sure.

Open windows every day. When I lived in England, even on the cold days, I would walk around our (teeny) house and open every window, count to ten then go and close them all. All the air got exchanged and it just felt fresh.

Your washing should be dried outside as much as possible and dried properly.

If a room is particularly funky, strip the bed and wash everything, get quilts, blankets, pillows and soft toys outside and stand your mattress up with the window open. The weather needs to be dry, not necessarily warm. Cold, clear weather will do just as well. If you think that’s not enough, open the wardrobe and drawers to air as well.

I regularly get our pillows and quilts outside, even the sheepskin mattress cover. Shake and bash. You will be horrified at the crud thwt flies out.

Work around the house, one room at a time and get it clean and fresh. By the end of summer, you won’t know yourself.

Keirawr · 27/04/2025 10:25

Keeping it clean, avoiding pets especially dogs, and opening windows when cooking.
