Lovely smelling homes

How do some homes smell so nice! Sort of across between clean laundry and freshly baked cakes?! I hate anything scented so don't like buying diffusers etc. We do washing several times a week and our home never smells like this!

I also clean!

Everyone is noseblind to their own house

I agree with this, with the exception of my teenage son’s room

JDM625 · 27/04/2025 17:02

-No cat litter trays in the house 🤢
-No furry animals living in the house (Yes friend, I CAN smell your guinea pigs)
-No smoking
-No cooking inside that permeates and lingers- kippers/sardines

-Tiles or wooden flooring
-Regular washing of cushions, curtains and soft furnishings
-Window/doors open

mackawhack · 27/04/2025 17:04

We clean ourselves and change into clean clothes a couple of times a day. I never keep on the same clothes I cook in on, then sit around in our furniture in smelly clothes

this isn't normal surely

I'm not , i have an extremely strong sense of smell ,i also have 3 dogs.
I wash bedlinen ,towels ,throws and cushion covers regularly ,hoover pretty much daily , clean my sinks daily ,work surface every time its used ,toilets daily.
Windows are open daily and i burn lovely candles quite often.
All these things i would do regardless of dogs as a family of 5 can cause a bit of a stink on occasion !
I don't have plug ins but i do often buy fresh flowers.
I work with animals and i have been to many homes with animals in that smell as clean as mine ,equally i have been to disgustingly stinking ones too !
I'm certainly not a slave to cleaning and it only takes a few minutes once your on top of things .

UnstablePelican · 27/04/2025 17:14

How can you never open your windows OP!?
They need opening every day.

No shoes inside (would never ever happen where I live, nor carpets). Wash filters on kitchen fan very often.

Lookingtomakechanges · 27/04/2025 17:18

Avoid every artificial diffuser and 'freshener'.
Cut some fresh lavender or a little orange peel and leave in a saucer.
If the room actually smells bad, some vinegar in water in a bowl near the window.
Open the windows at least once a day even if cold, and whenever it's warm outside.
Have mostly hard floors and wash them weekly. Shampoo rugs every few months.
If you find soft chairs/sofas get a bit smelly, cover them with throws and wash as needed.

faerietales · 27/04/2025 10:41

I've been told a few times our home smells really nice.

We open the windows and air the house for at least an hour a day, often 24-7 in the warmer months. We have two open now, for example.
I vacuum and mop the floors daily.
We have blankets on our sofas that are washed at least once a week.
We have a wax burner and burn scented soy melts constantly when we're at home and awake.
Beds are changed every week with fresh linen.
No damp clothes lying about - we either line-dry or use the tumble dryer.
We don't use fabric conditioner - just supermarket own brand non-bio washing liquid.
Toilet is cleaned twice a day and we have nice-scented cleaning sprays that we use in the bathroom and kitchen everyday.

We have three cats and a dog, but no DC. Litter trays are emptied regularly and no pet food is left lying around. All the dirty dog towels and bedding etc. are washed regularly so nothing is left sat around.

Edited

This is amazing, but I have to ask how you find time for all this, mopping daily etc. do you have daily schedule?

RentalWoesNotFun · 27/04/2025 17:42

Neom essential oil diffuser kit is on QVC today as the Todays Special Value.

Charge at home and take in the go. Sounds good for £45 I think it is. Today only if there are any left. 60 day trial. Return for full money back except postage both ways.

faerietales · 27/04/2025 17:44

@Fairislesweater I wouldn't say a schedule as such, just a routine of doing certain things on certain days/at certain times, if that makes sense.

But as I said I don't have DC to worry about and both DH and I work part-time so we have plenty of free time.

TicTac80 · 27/04/2025 17:47

I'm told my place smells nice (but people are maybe just being polite as I have four cats and 2 DC, inc one teenage son!). Maybe the following helps:

-We have windows open all the time...even in the winter. I think this is the thing that makes the biggest difference! If we are out for the day (school/work/days out), we have them partially open (when they're open a chink, but still locked if that makes sense).
-The cats have automatic litter trays. These are cleaned and emptied weekly. The cats also have dry food (as per vet recommendation). Their feeding bowls are covered ones (microchip read) so maybe that helps too.
-All our floors are wood or tile, and they're hoovered and mopped daily (by robovacs). Once a week, I go over all the floors with a normal vacuum cleaner and a steam cleaner. Mop heads, filters etc are cleaned frequently! Cleaning cloths also washed frequently (or they end up stinking!).
-bedding is washed weekly. Sofa covers, cushion covers and throws washed monthly. Curtains every 3-6 months.
-I don't allow any food upstairs (and no drinks upstairs apart from water).
-kitchen cleaned every day/after use. Washing up done straight away. Rubbish bins taken out to wheelie bin every other day. Bathroom cleaned frequently (i.e. wipe things down, clean WC daily, and use shower spray in bath/shower).

The one thing I can't do/haven't figured out yet is how to clean the filters on my kitchen extractor fan. I can't see a way to get at it, and it's bugged me for ages!! I've searched online for instructions, but to no avail.

Open windows makes a big difference in terms of freshness. I’ve recently become a ‘windows open every morning’ person I can I smell and feel the house is just fresher in general.

I try to do this but have terrible hay fever that starts with tree pollen in spring and carries on until September. I also have neighbours who are really noisy so that limits when I can open them as the shouting and arguing is horrible.

Phoebepeeby · 27/04/2025 17:48

We never purposefully open our windows so this will definitely help.

Never purposefully?

For us it’s windows open daily.
Clean home with textiles cleaned regularly.
We do bake bread most days!
Living far away from traffic! We prefer eau de farm.
We do have dogs but they are bathed often (and I think we might be a bit nose blind but no one else has ever commented).

Everyone is noseblind to their own house

If only that were true.

amicisimma · 27/04/2025 17:49

Fresh air - windows open regularly, specially during cooking.

Fresh flowers.

No pets or ghastly artificial smellies - diffusers, sprays, candles, plug ins, laundry products, etc.

BankHolidayBonanza · 27/04/2025 17:50

It's very individual.

Some people think their house smell lovely, when I think they absolutely stink. Think visiting a Lush store or the Duty Free Perfume Section.

You also get used to smells, so they might not even realise how strong the chemical smells are.

I prefer a house that is clean - I can't imagine not opening the windows for at least 1 hour a day, soft furnishing clean and washed when possible and so on.
I have diffusers or candles in the kitchen to get ride of the smell of food too, it's the only room that could smell. (and the loos, obviously!)

BankHolidayBonanza · 27/04/2025 17:51

We have windows open all the time...even in the winter.

you are brave, I am too cold for that!
Only the loos have a window opened all year round, I don't leave windows opened more than 1 hour or so for the rest of the house in winter- my heating bills are high enough 😂

Rhdyghdh · 27/04/2025 17:53

In the winter a pot with orange peel and cloves on the woodburner or stove.

spring, grow hyacinths.

Summer some roses.

Air the house well.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 27/04/2025 17:56

I'm an absolute slattern with a dreadful dog but I try to keep the place smelling nice by opening windows frequently, even in the depths of winter; cleaning the floors regularly (I have tiled flooring which helps stop smells); putting rugs outside in dry weather (I've found it's most effective if you can leave them out overnight in freezing weather, I assume the cold helps kill any smelly bugs); washing throws and cushion covers regularly.

Apparently my house smells quite nice according to impartial visitors.

spottydinosaur · 27/04/2025 17:57

My house always smells fresher when the windows are cleaned

TheSpottedZebra · 27/04/2025 18:00

Only 2 people have mentioned bins.
Empty your bins, people!
Giant kitchen bins, on heated floors, give me the absolute horror.

Letshavetea1 · 27/04/2025 18:04

I think it’s about keeping on top of dusting, wiping all surfaces, cleaning bathrooms and kitchens, vacuuming and mopping. Also about opening windows. Change beds and towels frequently. All of this to be done at least weekly. We have no pets in our house which I think helps.

Letshavetea1 · 27/04/2025 18:05

Also I agree about empty and wash out bins frequently.

intrepidpanda · 27/04/2025 18:09

No pets. No smoking, air the house regular (even in winter)
