To throw DD(2) knickers away when she has an accident?

That's it in a nutshell.

She's 2 and 4 months, she initiated potty training a month ago so we went with it and she is broadly dry. However she has stopped doing poos on the potty and is doing them in her knickers 🤢

She seems to wait to do an enormous poo and it's often quite soft (she eats a lot of fruit) and it goes everywhere 🤢

I'm honestly sick of scooping sh*t out of tiny little knickers and then them still coming out stained from the wash. The pair today I put in a nappy bag, poo and all, and binned.

NB we do put her on potty routinely (going out potty, coming home potty, after dinner potty) but her poos have lost all routine (maybe she's withholding?!).

Am I being unreasonable?!!! And any advice?!!

Yeah always. Didn't happen often, maybe 5 times in all. Life's too short

sesquipedalian · 26/04/2025 20:34

When my DD was potty training her son, not only did she dispose of poo pants, she told nursery to do so as well. She says they’re cheaper than nappies and life is too short!

the really bad ones I throw away - one thing you could try if you can’t afford to keep spending on pants is to hold the pants in the toilet whilst you press the flush (obviously not with your hand in the water too!) and let the water flush the worst away then wash them as usual

Just hold them tight if you do this, I've lost a few pairs of pants as the flush was much harder than I expected!

I would never chuck, always wash, but then I did do cloth nappies and wipes so probably have a high tolerance.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 26/04/2025 21:25

Thank you all! I feel marginally less bad now. Not sure I could have coped with cloth nappies tbh, precious idiot I am!

I binned the messy ones but the more solid ones I emptied and put through a hot wash.

Cloth nappies weren’t too bad as you use a liner in them. The liner catches the mess and you just fold it (the liner) over and bag it.

Lascivious · 26/04/2025 21:30

Not remotely unreasonable. I’d bin every time.

absolutely bin the pants.

I’ve recently gone through this stage and altered my LO’s diet to avoid slushy poos. highly recommend doing this!

What have you changed if you don't mind me asking? My little one eats everything but his poos are always squishy 😫

BlueTitShark · 26/04/2025 21:34

Dc2 had issues either faecal incontinence/soiling due to constipation.
If I had put his soiled pants in the bin, I would have needed 7 new pair of pants each week. Just not possible, even with the cheap Tesco ones.

So yes I can confirm they wash very well.

snackatack · 26/04/2025 21:35

if your child is pooing in their pants everyday why are you not using nappies?

crumblingschools · 26/04/2025 21:43

@Mysleepingangel apple juice was the trigger for DS.

If that was an answer to my post, this is because dc2 was at school, aged between 4yo to 6yo. Under paediatrician etc…
it wasn’t a ‘I can’t use the toilet’ issue (which is what nappies are for) but leakage.

HTH

It wasn't to you at all.. it was to the OP who stated their child was 2 years 4 months.

Yeah I'd like to know too! I've tried to up her wholegrains and focus on veg more to increase fibre!

Yes just throw them away. Excess landfill won't be a problem in your lifetime. So who cares. Oh, your daughter might, her children might..

saraclara · 26/04/2025 22:02

I know that the Mumsnet demographic tends to the well-off, but seriously? The vast majority of responders so far would see knickers as a single use product?

Apart from being a bit pathetic and a waste of a lot of money, it's a shocking waste.

nyancatdays · 26/04/2025 22:07

There are worse things people do in this world and far worse wastes than binning a few small pants. It’s fine to bin them OP.

yummyscummymummy01 · 26/04/2025 22:22

My son went through a stage like this. I bought cheap ones and binned them. I had three under three and have never felt remotely guilty about it.

PNDshame · 26/04/2025 22:23

I bin them. I'm keeping matalan I'd underwear deportment in business by constantly stocking up on 10 packs of pants 😔

crumblingschools · 26/04/2025 21:43

Ah I see.
Mine doesn't have any apple juice although he regularly has an apple daily. I'll try to cut this out.

Theunamedcat · 26/04/2025 22:32

Have you tried encouraging a poo? Blowing bubbles sitting on the potty apparently helps

FumingTRex · 26/04/2025 22:41

Toddler diarrhoea is often caused by too much fruit, and many of the heavily marketed toddler snack products are particularly bad as they often contain apple and dates. You want to reduce fibre and increase fat- so give soft cheese on a cracker rather than a fruit based bar.

My DS pooed his pants regularly for nearly 5 years, so throwing them away wasn’t really an option!

crumblingschools · 26/04/2025 22:51

Toddler snacks can be sweetened by apple juice rather than sugar

Endofyear · 26/04/2025 23:06

I never binned them - just tipped the poo in the loo and soaked pants in napisan before washing. They didn't stain. Maybe cut down on fruit for a bit while you're still training so things are a bit more solid?

Surroundedbyfools · 26/04/2025 23:42

I’m sure the eco warriors will be along to tell you how wasteful and bad for the environment binning clothes is but wen my environment involves scrubbing shite out of tiny pants that’s bad for my mental health so chuck them in the bin and move on. Life’s to short to scrub shit
