To think that snow is pretty to watch but useless otherwise?

I get that snow looks magical when it first falls, and sure, it makes for nice pictures. But beyond that? It’s a nightmare. It disrupts travel, turns into disgusting grey sludge, and makes everything colder and more inconvenient. Unless you’re skiing or building a snowman, what’s the actual appeal?

AIBU to think that snow is mostly just a hassle disguised as something charming?

Skiing is pretty shit without snow

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 26/04/2025 16:57

As a northern New Englander I totally agree.

MemorableTrenchcoat · 26/04/2025 17:00

Snow just is. It’s not “disguised” as anything, it just happens to have an appearance that many humans, and possibly some other creatures, find appealing.

And in other news, the sky is blue.

Coconutter24 · 26/04/2025 17:04

Where in the world are you currently because if you’re not somewhere that’s snowing this is very random

toomuchfaff · 26/04/2025 17:06

So what do you propose? We cancel snow? We complain to a manager to stop producing snow?

Not sure what you AIBU is?

Haha, no complaints to the weather manager! It’s just a tongue in cheek observation - snow looks lovely at first but practically speaking, it’s mostly a hassle. I was just wondering if anyone else secretly feels the same or if I’m being a total grump about it!

You can clean carpets and wool jumpers in snow. It's also handy if desperate and you have run out of ice for a G&T.

Do wholeheartedly agree though, looks fab out the window, shitty slush, cold feet and bleurgh when you're in it

I don't think this is a remotely unusual view. Most people think snow is pretty. Everyone knows it's inconvenient after one day of admiring it and/or walking or playing in it.

Snow is very much needed (in places where you normally get snow) - when it melts slowly, as it should, it contributes to the normal water cycle - in other words the water trapped in snow stays put and is released slowly instead of moving quickly and resulting in draught, erosion, flooding and other extreme weather conditions.

We used to have months of snow where I live, this year we’ve had literally hours. Because of this it’s really dry right now, animals that hibernate in winter suffer because there’s not enough water for them and I expect we are going to have another summer of forest fires and water shortages.
