Will my wedding breakfast sound like an Indian restaurant?

(Sharing on behalf of cousin)

Im getting married in Summer. Being half Indian I am trying to find ways to bring in both cultures. I really like the idea of playing classic Bollywood songs but instrumental versions during the wedding breakfast. But my family think this will make the meal sound as if we are in an Indian restaurant.

90s 00s Bollywood songs can be spectacularly beautiful. And they remind me of watching Bollywood movies with my grandparents.

If you went to a wedding with Bollywood instrumental music playing in the background (quiet enough so people can still talk) would you get reminded of an Indian restaurant?

I think it’s pretty. People are suggesting no music but I think I that is also a bit dead

I would love it!

Sauvin · 26/04/2025 13:20

What’s wrong with sounding like an Indian restaurant? I love Indian restaurants!

itsnotabouthepasta · 26/04/2025 13:20

I think that sounds amazing! I think it would make your wedding feel really unique

Robinredd · 26/04/2025 13:20

Sounds like it would be beautiful.

8dateslater · 26/04/2025 13:21

I think it sounds completely fine and I wouldn't think anything of it except probably like it

I'm not sure why sounding like an Indian restaurant would be particularly bad though, most restaurants have some sort of soft playlist and wouldn't be horrified if it sounded more like an Indian restaurant than any other

MereNoelle · 26/04/2025 13:22

It sounds lovely. We had flamenco music playing through ours.

PinkyFlamingo · 26/04/2025 13:22

Sounds great!

SillySeal · 26/04/2025 13:22

I'd love it

NotSafeInTaxis · 26/04/2025 13:23

As long as the food matches....

As long as the food matches....

food will be Indian-English fusion

I'm Indian. I'd hate it, I'm afraid. I'd go for a fusion artist like Nitin Sawhney. Plenty of edgy, funky Indian musical artists out there.

Baital · 26/04/2025 13:26

I would assume it was because of your heritage.

I'm not sure what the problem is with Indian restaurants?!

chattyness · 26/04/2025 13:28

Could you have a mix of Bollywood and other instrumental music you enjoy?

purpleme12 · 26/04/2025 13:28

I don't go to Indian restaurants enough to know

But what's wrong with having the same music as an indian restaurant has?
Isn't that all it boils down to?

And I think you should have the music that you want

vincettenoir · 26/04/2025 13:29

I think Bollywood classics sounds great. But if you want to appease your family by making sure it doesn’t sound like an Indian restaurant go for songs with lyrics. Indian restaurants tend to have instrumental songs only.

Merryoldgoat · 26/04/2025 13:29

Sounds fab as long as it’s not too loud to talk.

Thelondonone · 26/04/2025 13:30

I cannot remember the music during any wedding breakfast I’ve ever been to, including my own…. As long as it’s not loud I couldn’t give a shit. I also like Indian restaurants.

PhilippaGeorgiou · 26/04/2025 13:31

The person whose wedding it is gets to pick. If your cousin likes it then that's what happens. Her family should butt out - they aren't getting married. Her day, her choice.

mindutopia · 26/04/2025 13:34

I have no idea, but I would love it. Some sitar music too. Are you having Indian food? That would be a bonus for me.

BobbyBiscuits · 26/04/2025 13:34

I don't think people will suddenly mistake your beautiful wedding for a restaurant of any type?!
Unless it was held in one which they're nothing wrong with.
Just have music whenever you like. I'd say make sure it's not too loud just so conversation can flow easily. But then of course turn it up when everyone hits the dancefloor.
Your wedding sounds lovely. X

I don’t want funky that’s the thing. I want nostalgic, sentimental music that has a place in my heart. Mohabbatein, Veer Zara anyone?

Yes sitar and Indian flute can be spine tinglingly gorgeous

I think that’s so rude and disparaging to say don’t have beautiful Indian music, reflecting your culture, because it will sound like an Indian restaurant.

SnoozingFox · 26/04/2025 13:38

Do you need to have music? I've not been to a wedding which has music playing during the food.

murasaki · 26/04/2025 13:38

My relatives string quartet often play Bollywood music for Indian/mixed weddings, it always seems to go down well.
