Will my wedding breakfast sound like an Indian restaurant?

(Sharing on behalf of cousin)

Im getting married in Summer. Being half Indian I am trying to find ways to bring in both cultures. I really like the idea of playing classic Bollywood songs but instrumental versions during the wedding breakfast. But my family think this will make the meal sound as if we are in an Indian restaurant.

90s 00s Bollywood songs can be spectacularly beautiful. And they remind me of watching Bollywood movies with my grandparents.

If you went to a wedding with Bollywood instrumental music playing in the background (quiet enough so people can still talk) would you get reminded of an Indian restaurant?

I think it’s pretty. People are suggesting no music but I think I that is also a bit dead

Has everyone RSVPed? Any spare seats? Asking for a friend, well, no, asking for me.

Happy to be your plus one

People will love this. Congratulations.

I'm half Indian too, and actually hired out an Indian restaurant for our reception! It was awesome - the food was an amazing buffet, and we had really bright and beautiful flower arrangements. So your music plans sound good and pretty restrained to me!

To the people asking what’s wrong with sounding like an Indian restaurant, come on now. No one wants their wedding to feel like an Indian restaurant, or any other kind of restaurant. Or a shopping mall. Or a lift. Because all of those places have instrumental music and while perfectly lovely, it’s not the vibe you want for your wedding.

I’m not saying it WILL sound like one, but let’s have some honesty around what OP is asking.

OP, I think a PP raised a really pertinent point - out of those coming to your wedding, how many will be familiar with Bollywood music? If people are familiar with the music, I very much doubt they’d think of an Indian restaurant for a second. But, as a PP said, if the only place your guests will have heard instrumental Indian music is at their local restaurant, then yes, there may be that association. Only you know your guests.

If it were my wedding I wouldn’t have any music during the meal because I find the combined noises too much. I take the kids to a local cafe-style place for a weekly meet and I come away feeling exhausted from the combination of noises as they play background music (I’m autistic). But I very much doubt there are many people with my ridiculous over sensitivity and I’m sure that people will love the ambience your planned music would provide.

Personally, I don’t think you should give it a second thought. You sound like you know exactly what you want and it sounds really meaningful. I really don’t think you should worry at all. Have what is special to you.

I was hoping you meant there would be bargis, samosas, aloo gobi etc way better than any English meal! I think the music is a lovely nod to your heritage.

It really doesn't matter what anyone apart from you and your husband think.

Sorry I missed the line about the food. Even better!

I think that’s so rude and disparaging to say don’t have beautiful Indian music, reflecting your culture, because it will sound like an Indian restaurant.

It’s her family who have said it. They're part Indian.

I think you should have the music you want. Maybe intersperse it with other Indian music genres to break it up a bit if you’re concerned. Otherwise have the music exactly as you want it.

Sounds lovely.

I’ve been to a traditional Indian wedding. I’m sure there was lots of Indian music but I don’t remember, the food was fab though.

It sounds like a great wedding.

What @SpidersAreShitheads said.

If I were there, I would assume any music played were the choice of the B&G, and if people from 2 different cultures I would expect there to be elements of both at the wedding.

However I think music playing during the meal (any music) is too much. Really not needed, and, for many, better without.

soupyspoon · 26/04/2025 16:59

Whats wrong with Indian restaurants and why does everything have to be 'modernised'

Bring back flock wallpaper and Indian music and old fashioned tables and chairs.

Cant stand this new trend for glass tables and black chairs, trying to be all Manhattan c1995.

menopausalfart · 26/04/2025 17:02

If it's what you want and it'll make you happy, do it. One day, that's all yours and your husband-to-be.

afig · 26/04/2025 17:54

Music is personal, so I'd do whatever pleased me (and my fiance). Something that brings back happy childhood memories is perfect for a wedding.

TumbledTussocks · 26/04/2025 18:20

Sounds amazing, I’d love it - but most importantly it’s YOUR day!
Have the music that gives you joy.

Mermaidsarereal · 27/04/2025 12:27

I got married 6 months ago, the only advice I can offer is... it's your wedding! Honestly, I tried so hard to people please and it drove me mad. If you want that type of music, have it and if people moan, they can leave!
