Will my wedding breakfast sound like an Indian restaurant?

(Sharing on behalf of cousin)

Im getting married in Summer. Being half Indian I am trying to find ways to bring in both cultures. I really like the idea of playing classic Bollywood songs but instrumental versions during the wedding breakfast. But my family think this will make the meal sound as if we are in an Indian restaurant.

90s 00s Bollywood songs can be spectacularly beautiful. And they remind me of watching Bollywood movies with my grandparents.

If you went to a wedding with Bollywood instrumental music playing in the background (quiet enough so people can still talk) would you get reminded of an Indian restaurant?

I think it’s pretty. People are suggesting no music but I think I that is also a bit dead

Sounds amazing to me!

olympicsrock · 26/04/2025 13:40

Sounds beautiful, very atmospheric. Have what you love

Neveranynamesleft · 26/04/2025 13:42

I would like that too, as long as it wasnt loud, just gentle background music. I think it's a lovely idea.

Yes sitar and Indian flute can be spine tinglingly gorgeous

I was going to suggest sitar too. I think Indian music in the background during the meal sounds wonderful. No music will make the whole thing sound like a canteen imho.

Your wedding. You do you.

AllTangledUpInDaisiesAndDiadems · 26/04/2025 13:43

It's your wedding!! Details like this are what make a wedding uniquely yours and add charm.

(I'd love it as a guest and it really wouldn't make me think of a restaurant/curry house, not that that's actually a bad thing)

The only thing is I would say is make sure it's not too loud.

Olinguita · 26/04/2025 13:44

90s/00s Bollywood music is its own kind of magic and I would love this at a wedding! Play some A.R.Rahman classics and it will be the perfect vibe.
For what it's worth I'm a white woman married to an Indian guy and we walked out of the church to "Jai Ho" at our wedding and I walked down the aisle to another South Asian song

Tereseta · 26/04/2025 13:46

It's your wedding and I think it sounds lovely! For our wedding we had a pianist playing heavy metal songs while we ate, it sounded great and loads of people commented positively on it.

Zeitumschaltung · 26/04/2025 13:48

Is there a half of your family that is objecting more than the other? Is the objection maybe driven by something else?
You should absolutely have the music you want. It wouldn’t remind me of an Indian restaurant but people tend to feel very positive about Indian restaurants so I wouldn’t have thought that was a negative association anyway.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 26/04/2025 13:48

I would love the vibe. I really like Indian music.

Oldandcobwebby · 26/04/2025 13:50

That sounds fantastic! And the food... I wish you and your spouse many years of happiness x

mindutopia · 26/04/2025 13:50

I’m curious what food you’re serving as part of your Indian-English fusion menu, purely because I wish I’d thought of that myself.

HappiestSleeping · 26/04/2025 13:50

It is your day (both of you), and you should do what you want a stuff what anyone else thinks.

Tarkan · 26/04/2025 13:52

I think it sounds lovely! I love quiet instrumental music of any kind when I’m eating at a wedding. I feel the chatter and clatter of plates echoes much less if there is some nice music playing.

And I technically got married in an Indian restaurant (actually the function room upstairs but the restaurant catered it for us). We’re not Indian but the restaurant was in an old church so the whole building was absolutely beautiful with the church architecture and Indian decor inside, and even now, 7 years later, people still talk about the amazing food. 😁

I hope you have a lovely day, people will have opinions on what you should do but it’s your day so go with what you would like.

Round123 · 26/04/2025 13:53

I’ve been to over a dozen weddings in the last 2 years. I would absolutely love it! Something different!!

Ihopeyouhavent · 26/04/2025 13:54

I had a guy play the Spanish guitar during our wedding breakfast. DH's family adored it.....go for it!

Maddy70 · 26/04/2025 13:57

That sounds perfect

SalfordQuays · 26/04/2025 13:57

Yes it will sound like an Indian restaurant to most of the non Indian people there, because the only time they’ll have heard this kind of music will generally be in Indian restaurants. However beautiful the music is, many people will make that association. Doesn’t mean she shouldn’t have that music though.

Theoldholeyjumper · 26/04/2025 13:58

You’re never going to please everyone, especially when it comes to music, and it’s your day so pick what’s going to make you happiest.

That being said I think that would be lovely way you start the day.

SunnieShine · 26/04/2025 13:59

Sounds excellent, I wish I was going.

Gettingbysomehow · 26/04/2025 14:00

My mum married an Indian man when I was three and we all went to live in his country for some years but I'm back in the UK now so Bollywood music was a staple of me and their children together growing up. As was combining both cultures.
For a wedding breakfast I'd prefer something like Ravi Shankar in the background as its gentler but heck it's your wedding have what you want....not too much loud singing and dancing through trees though 😁
I'm thinking of Bollywood circa 1970s.
And as long as you don't have paisley wallpaper and a plastic bar nobody will think Indian restaurant.
I had biriani and ashard legumes for my wedding breakfast, vegetarian of course and morris dancing. Everyone loved it.

CautiousLurker01 · 26/04/2025 14:03

Can you stretch to having a real Indian musician/group playing for a bit?

I had a string quartet playing at mine (sorry if that sounds pretentious, but DH and I both play instruments and his DGfather was church organist) and I have Iranian family who’ve had live music at weddings in the past (and a disco/normal band in the evening). It was brilliant to experience it live.

AliceMcK · 26/04/2025 14:04

I’d not think that at all. I’m not even certain I’ve heard Indian music at an Indian restaurant, if I have I’ve completely forgotten about it.

I’ve been to several Indian functions and weddings, I love Indian music and would love to hear it during a wedding breakfast.

Mypoorbody · 26/04/2025 14:06

I’d prefer no music. If you are going for Indian prefer original versions of Indian classical music.

Although I’m Indian heritage I’ve not followed Bollywood so just tunes, but great to have both heritage represented.

perfectstorm · 26/04/2025 14:08

I think it sounds bloody lovely.

Most traditional weddings are done to a template. After three, you could predict it all in your sleep, because the venues churn them out. Still lovely when you care about the couple, but still. Any variation on the norm, in a natural and tasteful way as this clearly would be, is welcome!
