Starting a thread about irrational fears - what are yours?

Here are mine -

The fear that a large spider will land on my arm when I’m pouring a kettle/will run up my leg šŸ•·ļø

The fear that a heavy object will land on my head when walking down a flight of stairs.

Fear of a person/ghost(!) standing on the other side of a closed door.

A horrible face appearing in a dark window.

Being sucked into an escalator 🤣 (child of the eighties here!)

A helicopter hovering by my bedroom window at night 🚁

The fear that something will appear when I am washing my hair and get shampoo in my eyes šŸ‘€

I changed my shower curtain to a screen because everytime I showered I had a terrible fear of someone grabbing me through the shower curtain.

Also that someone is going to grab my legs from under the car when I’m getting in or out šŸ™ˆ

That I will fall- sometimes I even imagine myself falling or going over on my ankle, whilst I'm walking.

That a spider will crawl on me at night while I'm asleep

That someone will walk up the stairs behind me when I turn the light off and go up to bed.

Anything to do with my feet, struggle to wear flip flops or sandals because I just constantly think something will fall on my feet or someone will stand on them. Tbf a heavy object did fall on my toe when I was very young and I nearly lost my toe so obviously some unresolved trauma there

I spent one night alone in a rented old house surrounded by bushes and overgrown gardens before my furniture arrived in the truck. There was no electricity, no furniture and no curtains at the windows. Even though I am the most pragmatic and sensible person in the world, those big, black open windows really spooked me once it became dark outside. I was convinced that I’d see something or someone looking in at me.

The car one isn't so unusual.
I worked for Volvo many years ago and they had lights installed under the door mirrors so that you could see if anyone was lurking under the car in the dark.
Apparently in South Africa, car thieves used to lie in wait under cars with a knife and slash at the heels of the owner before taking the keys and steeling the car.

Sorry if I've just made your fear worse!

To be fair I think that would freak a lot of people out!

HazelKoala · 25/04/2025 10:59

I think they're all rational fears as they could happen.

The irrational part only comes in if you worry excessively about them as they are extremely unlikely to happen.

Irrational fears are more like worrying about bears in England. Or sharks in a swimming pool.

Oh my gosh that’s my worst fear! 😨

Funnily enough one scene in hostel gave me the fear of the back of the ankles! šŸ™ˆ

Anyone who's been to lightwaves leisure centre in Wakefield will know the big grills they had in the pool for the wave machine. Definitely could have kept sharks behind there. Was definitely one of mine as a kid. And maybe now too tbh.

WhySoManySocks · 25/04/2025 11:15

Spiders

Elevators

Family members being replaced by zombie body doubles, or worse, two versions of my husband appearing in the kitchen and me not knowing which one is real and which one is the zombie copy

squashyhat · 25/04/2025 11:20

Staying in large hotels, I have visions of all the people above and below me tucked up in bed like me and waiting for the whole thing to collapse like a pack of cards. I have never stayed in a war zone and the two earthquakes I have experienced have been so slight I slept through one of them. šŸ™„

Oh gosh yes I feel really upset when I see people walking about busy streets and on public transport wearing only flipflops.
Their feet look so vulnerable.

Not helped by my friend telling me the gory details - she likes doing things like that - of how she walked up concrete steps in fliflops and caught her big toe on the edge of a step and the nail came off.

Makes me feel ill.

morethanspice · 25/04/2025 11:27

That double decker buses will tip over. Not often on a bus but they scare me

dddilemma · 25/04/2025 11:31

Butterflies - can't even look at a picture 😭

UmopapIsdn · 25/04/2025 11:32

When in the car with DH I have to have the radio playing just in case he suddenly develops telepathic powers and hears my daydreams (which are often years long epic stories of other lives I’m living in my head).

This is beyond irrational but I'm not risking it!
