One about sleep

Is it ok for my 6 year old to sometimes have difficulty falling asleep? Some days he takes 10 mins, others it can be an hour. Is this just the norm for some kids? No known or suspected SEN. Not being naughty and getting out of bed, just not falling asleep. Once asleep, he stays asleep for 10-12 hours. Would you be worried?

Sounds very normal. Do you not have the occasional night it’s hard to nod off?

Pickledonionmonstermuncher · 24/04/2025 22:34

Yes of course but I thought as a general rule, kids were so shattered by the end of a school day, they all go out like a light? I’d say he falls asleep on average about 30 mins after lights out, but often it can be 45 mins to an hour

It wouldn’t even cross my mind to be worried.

Pretty much everything I’ve read said for good sleep hygiene children should take no longer than 20 minutes to fall asleep. My child more of than not takes longer than that, sometimes significantly

As parents we can't worry about every little facet of our children's lives. There seems to be a thread popping up every day on here wondering aloud whether they should be 'worried' about something or other.

And of course we worry about our kids, but they all seem to be 'worried' about the same thing. Kids are kids. Some fall asleep quicker than others.

I just wanted to know if other people had kids the same age who were similar

Normal, mine struggled sometimes.
Audiobooks are good 👍

You’re way too anxious about this. Children are just human beings. Not every child will conform to every guideline and recommendation. It’s fine. You need to chill out.

I slept brilliantly as a baby but after reaching the age of about four, I doubt I ever fell asleep within twenty minutes ever again. I used to be awake for at least an hour, often longer. I was still a perfectly healthy and happy kid.

One child never slept more than 8 hours - down easily but up at the crack of dawn. He’s 21 now and is the same. Other child the opposite. Struggled getting to sleep but can sleep in til noon or later. Just accept that children are as varied as adults in their sleeping habits.
