Do you hate scented washing conditioner/pods?

If someone’s used highly scented washing products on their clothes, I can’t stand it.

For me.. a (non) scented laundry powder/liquid and washing dried outside is perfect!

Light hearted - DF does, I do not

I will take it on the chin if I’m proved to be wrong!

How boring. I prefer scent.

TimeSquared · 24/04/2025 15:37

Agree with you OP

I'm all about the scent. Love all the scent boosters. People always tell me I smell nice.

Comfort booster is gorgeous.

LavenderBlue19 · 24/04/2025 15:39

Hate them. Stuff from Vinted always stinks, I don't know how people stand it.

Jennalong · 24/04/2025 15:40

Stopped using fabric conditioner when I found out it had animal fat in it . Yuk .

Heremaycome · 24/04/2025 15:40

I used to work with a man who always smelt like fresh washing dried outside.. I just loved the smell of him when he walked past in a fresh shirt, more than aftershave. Now I’m wondering if I’m weird… 🤣

I do agree with line dried though, enhances everything.

I wouldn’t say this. I’d be thinking that you stink. But m, like others. I probably wouldn’t say it to your face.

That's cool. What I don't know doesn't bother me. I'll stick with what others say to me

Heremaycome · 24/04/2025 15:44

I have to say she doesn’t use comfort boosters, and I haven't smelt them, happy to backtrack on that one

I like the unscented ones, some of the scents give me a headache. Got a scented (bold - lavender) one as a substitution this time though and DH keeps going on about how nice the bedding smells so he’ll probably want to switch now. It’s not actually given me a headache this time but I do still find it a little overpowering still.

I’m terrible with smell since being pregnant though, can’t wear perfume, can’t walk past the Lush shop without feeling sick and headachey, can’t stand car air fresheners in a taxi, struggle at my in-law’s house with the various conflicting diffuser and scented candle smells - it makes me feel like I’m getting a migraine. I assumed it would go back to normal once I was no longer pregnant but DD is nearly 5 and I’m still as bad.

Yes! I have to wash it a few times myself and air it thoroughly before I can wear it.

Jessica5678 · 24/04/2025 15:46

I don’t mind a very slight scent - so if I actually go to smell the item I can smell it’s just washed.

I hate heavily scented though - like my relative who uses so many overpoweringly fragranced laundry products I can identify by smell which rooms she’s been in several hours after her visits and I used to have to change my baby’s clothes after she held them because they reeked of Lenor. I suspect she is nose blind and has no idea.

NippyNinjaCrab · 24/04/2025 15:48

A couple of weeks ago I would have disagreed with you @Heremaycome but I've since thought my clothes don't smell nice at all for some reason? It's like they've not been dried properly especially the throws so I've rewashed most of the house with washing pods only and they smell fab, so fresh. I'm working through our wardrobes and doing the same. I used to be the softener and matching boosters person, and even got the new concentrated liquid boosters. I don't know if it's a build up of chemicals but certain things I was wearing like leggings and t shirts even if cotton started to smell musty, not cats piss smell like not dried enough but just "off"
I was blaming my hormones!

HomeTheatreSystem · 24/04/2025 15:49

Don't use them. They make me heave. The scents are cloyingly synthetic and the feel of thicker fabrics like knits and fleeces, is awful.

ouch321 · 24/04/2025 15:50

It's v trendy on Mumsnet in the past couple of years to post stating how much you hate either/ or perfume and scented laundry products.

I love both and if I didn't use scented laundry products not only would I not pick up a garment and think oh that smells nice when I put it on but also I'd begin to doubt myself as to whether I'd put the detergent etc into the machine and accidentally run a wash without any actual cleaning going on.

Agree, i also think it's worn out clothes so much quicker. Some things feel coated and I was using a small capful.

idolikealiein · 24/04/2025 15:56

I volunteer in a charity shop. Opening bags that stink of fabric conditioner makes us all heave. It's revolting. Fabric conditioner coats your clothes in a layer of plastic. Why would you want this?

NancyBellaDonna · 24/04/2025 15:56

They smell horrible. The perfume hurts my nose and gives me asthma.

If you have bought something from Vinted 10-to-1 it will smell vile when you open it - it's like letting a Stink Genie out of the bag.

BTW you can buy unperfumed plant-based detergents from M&S. No guesses as to what I buy.

NancyBellaDonna · 24/04/2025 15:57

I think you can buy non-perfumed disinfectant from M&S too.

I have read that highly perfumed detergents/ conditioners really hurt a dog's nose and upsets their sense of smell.

How boring. I prefer scent.

I prefer good scent that I’ve chosen because it works well with my body chemistry - often known as perfume. I don’t need my clothes clashing with it.

Ophy83 · 24/04/2025 16:01

In UK I go unscented as I find our fragrances overwhelming. In France I go for Persil savon de marseilles. I don't think it's the same Persil brand that we have here (there was once a thread started by an insider from the laundry industry and I'm pretty sure that's what she said). They have a Provence scent and an almond scent, both are lovely and not overwhelming. Worth bringing back

SausalitoSue · 24/04/2025 16:03

I prefer no scent - I have one friend particularly whose house reeks of fairy/ariel or whatever it is and you can smell them coming from a mile off. Bloody love her and whenever I get a whiff from anyone else it reminds me of her! But if I had to be breathing that in 24/7 I’d have a constant headache/nausea.

I get terrible headaches from artificial scents so I'd hate be sitting next to you at work! I know a few people (unrelated) with the same thing, and others who have allergic asthma and start sneezing, wheezing and coughing when theyre around people who use it
