Sides. No. It is side dishes. See also mains (Shudder)

I made lamb at Easter. No, you cooked it.

Cooked to your liking. Well they woudn't deliberately cook it otherwise if they wanted to stay in business...

Pan-fried. What else would you fry it in?

I came here to say that too , I could understand it if they said shallow or deep fried but I'll be buggered if if I will try to fry something without a pan.
I agree about the phrase dirty food , why would you refer to something that you want to sound appealing?

Not quite the same but anyone that says 'a cheeky' whatever, glass of wine , chocolate, cake.
How the heck is cake cheeky?

There's a place in Leamington that advertises itself as an 'Eatery and Drinkery'....

I'm planning on visiting in the middle of the night with a large pot of paint.

There is a "Cakery" near me.
I did go once and had a full English Breakfast strangely

icecreamcrackers · 24/04/2025 17:58

Moist

Dartmoorcheffy · 24/04/2025 17:59

Nibbles
Picky bits
Nom nom

Squaffle · 24/04/2025 12:19

Oh and also (thank you for indulging peri-menopausal rage), we have family friends who refer to all meals as “eats”- as in “come over on Sunday for some eats”… they are so lovely but it makes me want to scream into a pillow every time

Oh my goodness nooo I’ve never heard this before!!
I can’t unsee it now ..

OlivePeer · 24/04/2025 18:02

lemonyfox · 24/04/2025 17:45

Entirely irrational, but people who say “tinned toms” or, even worse, “chopped tinned toms”.

I get this one! I think it seems jarring because tomato is pronounced more like t'mato, so tom doesn't flow as a shortening. Although I also dislike "choc" for chocolate and can't use the same excuse there!

Gonksmum · 24/04/2025 18:09

@70isaLimitNotaTarget - I'm not exactly sure which expression you mean but I know how annoying the food IG/ Facebook reels ( are they the same thing!?) people can be. There's one that a couple of women I've seen do when they taste food- a sort of shoulder wiggle and an 'mmmmm' face. It's extremely annoying!

stripedrollerskates · 24/04/2025 18:09

CherryRipe1 · 24/04/2025 11:55

Cook off and fry off, it's cook and fry. Also every ingredient described as beautiful, as opposed to ugly? Hand finished crisps. Sounds disgusting. Smashed avocado and now smash burgers. Piss off.

Thank you. Thank you. ‘Fry off’ gives me the rage!

canthavethatonethen · 24/04/2025 18:11

'Fry it off' - no, just fry it.

'Supper' - especially when said by Nigel Slater.

Glindaa · 24/04/2025 18:15

lol I am agreeing with this post & all of the comments 😂
my peeves might be controversial but I cannot stand in when people say ‘nom nom’. Instead of yum. There’s a cookery book stupidly titled ‘ pinch of nom”
Also really hate it when people “picky bits” for nibbles etc

canthavethatonethen · 24/04/2025 18:18

'Foraged' anything. Sounds like the chef has just been clambering about in the bottom of the hedge bordering the restaurant car park.

GustyBaloo · 24/04/2025 18:19

icecreamcrackers · 24/04/2025 17:58

Moist

That's all encompassing. The word shouldn't even exist in any situation.

Shudder

Glindaa · 24/04/2025 18:22

Bakes instead of cakes

GustyBaloo · 24/04/2025 18:28

AtomicBlondeRose · 24/04/2025 15:08

Your kids get Mexican blow for dinner...😮

It saves money on food and therefore saves any irritating terminology.

What's not to like? 🤔😂

LittleBitofBread · 24/04/2025 18:53

Oh God, so many of these.

The words portion and batch both make me intensely embarrassed; I can't explain why.

I really hate 'heaping' as in 'add a heaping tablespoon of yoghurt'.

Acommonreader · 24/04/2025 19:09

Sleepinggreyhounds · 24/04/2025 11:59

Pan-fried. What else would you fry it in?

I think it’s opposed to deep fat fried?

Wincher · 24/04/2025 19:11

Many of mine have already been mentioned but worth repeating;

Mac n cheese - we are not American! It’s macaroni cheese!
Plate up
All the trimmings
Chunks (of anything really)

And small plates/sharing plates are all very well but why do they have to have three of things?? I know it looks better but generally there are either two or four of us eating! Went to Yo Sushi the other day and everything came in twos or fours which was much easier for sharing. Slightly off topic I know…

Acommonreader · 24/04/2025 19:13

MrsMoastyToasty · 24/04/2025 13:11

"Deconstructed" as in "Deconstructed cottage pie" * . No you're too lazy to put the ingredients together, so it's mince and potatoes.

*usually served in a" ground breaking, forward thinking " restaurant by a wanky hipster type with a man bun.

My dc have been known to ask for a deconstructed cheese sandwich. So bread and cheese then 🙈😆

Acommonreader · 24/04/2025 19:19

SeventeenClovesOfGarlic · 24/04/2025 16:44

'Washed down with'. Disgusting phrase.

Weirdos round here refer to cafes as restaurants as 'eateries', not sure if they call the toilet the Shittery, or a pub as the Drinkery.

Edited

The Shittery !!! Excellent, I look forward to seeing this sign on an Eatery or Drinkery walk soon .

RaffleQueen · 24/04/2025 19:22

yorkies and roasties
posh anything
crusty bread especially if it’s a hunk slathered in butter
mac n cheese
plant based
sammich
snappin’ for packed lunch
a ’nice’ meal posters in here often suggest going for a nice meal as if anyone would choose a horrid one
nugs
a tipsy dessert
dubai chocolate

LittleBitofBread · 24/04/2025 19:25

Oh God I've just remembered, a friend of mine calls baked potatoes 'bakies'.
God love him, he's a good friend (and I have been the grateful recipient of the aforementioned many times), but I have to practically stuff my fist in my mouth so I don't scream.

NancyJoan · 24/04/2025 19:26

Did you go for some food?
What shall we do for food?

You mean dinner/lunch.

lovemycbf · 24/04/2025 19:29

Picky tea makes we cringe for no particular reason
dirty rice/fries also make me feel sick

Lucelady · 24/04/2025 19:41

Drizzled (sounds like snot).

And piles /heap. Both disgusting. A favourite of Mr O.

Unforgettablefire · 24/04/2025 19:42

Iammatrix · 24/04/2025 12:10

I really hate the word ‘portion’. It actually does make me squirm!

Me too! Even seeing it written makes my teeth curl 😣
