This 'brand logo' is despicable? (Possible TW)

Apparently theyre called 'Aape' but you can clearly see that they have changed the first 'A' to have a little flick coking off it that clearly makes it look like an 'R'.

If they're both 'A's why are they different? Theyre all capitals so its not lower case.

Who would wear this shit??

It seems deliberate to me. It reminds me of the TV show Nathan Barley, which parodied this sort of thing with a magazine called Sugar Ape, who decided to shrink the font on the letters SUGA in their title in an attempt to be edgy and provocative. That was satire back in 2005, so it’s a bit tragic that brands are still trying this sort of thing.

Yeah that's exactly what came to mind for me as well.

Nathan Barley has turned out to be depressingly prophetic. Not surprising really that Charlie Brooker went on to do Black Mirror.

The other one whose comedy turned into prophecy is Ben Elton - climate change as retail opportunity and billionaires building space rockets to escape it.

How many of you writing in to complain about a legitimate brand name have written to complain about the grooming gangs?

Who is one meant to write to to complain, the Grooming Gang Union?

Brands know exactly what they are doing when they release stuff like this. Remember the Balenciaga bondage bears campaign? Controversy can be great for business.

Remember the photo of Dolce & Gabanna simulating a gang rape as attractive. That was the day I swore I would never ever buy anything of that brand again. They thrive on a little controversy, then pretend it never happened.

Mylegishangingoff · 23/04/2025 21:27

On their other items it is clearly aape. It looks like it was just a bad font choice on that particular jacket not something the brand sets out to do on all of their clothes.

If you sell 100 pieces of clothing with your brand name on, the right number for the name to look like the word "rape" is precisely zero. This isn't a mistake they should be making even just once. Especially if they are (or aspire to be) a well-known quality brand: this sort of thing should be picked up well before the item goes into production.

SpookyMcTaggart · 24/04/2025 11:22

PullTheBricksDown · 23/04/2025 21:38

it is clearly aape

Oh yeah, that well known word aape, it's definitely that

Exactly. I read 'rape', as would most people. The double aa doesn't really crop up in English. The company knows what it's doing, it's deliberate.

Dotjones · 24/04/2025 11:25

I can't get too worked up about it. Scunthorpe is still on the map and on roadsigns and that has the actual c-word in it. The AAPE logo is just a bad font.

Don't be so ridiculous! Are you so out of touch that you didn't bother to see it's a Tokyo 'sister' brand to A Bathing Ape?

It looks nothing like rape and it's your mind that is twisting it.

No it isn’t. It clearly looks like rape.

Never heard of that brand, though I’m quite old.

You’ve lost me now! I’ve looked and looked but the skinny dick doesn’t appear! Must be me!

think yourself lucky - perhaps you have never seen one, so can’t relate?

It was a male pointed this particular logo out in a group (conspiracy theory) conversation about hidden signs, symbols, logo, be they Masonic or other
secret societies, fraternities, many of which are hidden-in-plain-sight,
on buildings, coats-of-arms, how we build sensory associations,
subliminal imagery, seen in the film of the man in the bear suit walking across
a room full of people which observers deny yet swear the same in woodlandis
a real yeti
visual manipulation, jingles, the insidious development of the Nike tick,
the human brain as computer does not always allow us to see, recognise, acknowledge what is presented before us as often, we see what we want to see
which isn’t always there anyway

Lol what? It’s an arrow going from a to z to show they have everything. Amazon are not great but they’re not proliferating skinny dicks, I don’t think 🤣

No, you'll be wanting Bad Dragon for that.

Anyone who goes on about Masonic symbols actually saves you a lot of time, because you know that everything else they're going to tell you about is a pile of bollocks that doesn't require your attention.

Seriously, step away from the University of Facebook.

in your bombastic opinion

I am not on Facebook
I am describing part of a fascinating lecture on mindbending

no one of my conversational acquaintance ‘goes on’ about
Masonic symbols or anything else

neither would they completely misconstrue a narrative

I'd never heard of it either but you really can't dispute that that logo looks like the word rape.
I would be horrified if any of my boys chose to wear that.

There's a plasterers van that drives round where I live with the brand name 'Spread It And Lay It'. They know what they're doing too.

It was pretty obvious it was i'n my opinion' because I posted it.

Not sure you know what 'bombastic' means, but it's got that song in my head and I'm quite enjoying it, so thanks in any case.

Did you ask "what does this word say" or "does this look spell rape"? How questions are asked is important.
And honestly, I didn't see what you see until after reading your post.

I showed the the photo and said 'What does that say?'

They all said Rape and was confused about it being on a jacket.

I am out of touch, have never heard of this brand and absolutely think it reads rape. And if I were this company, intentional or not, I would be horrified to realise this and withdraw it immediately. But then being out if touch and old fashioned I have standards around decency and acceptability.

Likewise. And it certainly reads as 'Rape' to me.

GustyBaloo · 25/04/2025 02:21

We have Sofa King.

Our prices are Sofa King good!

Actually I think they had to stop, but it took about 10 years went viral before anybody 'in charge' noticed.
They sold sofas. I couldn't comment on the quality.

I know nothing of the brand - I don’t think it’s aimed at me tbh.

however, it’s nonsense to say that the first “a’ doesn’t look more like an r. It definitely Italy doesn’t match the second a in the logo

And that font was consciously chosen. A capital A is not normally so rounded that it might be an R.

GeorgianaM · 26/04/2025 13:27

@Lookingtomakechanges

'Do you not think the logo reads as RAPE?'

No, not one of the garments displaying the AAPE logo looks like RAPE.

I've shown it around and no one else thinks it does and they've rolled their eyes when I've said it's been mistaken for the word RAPE.
