More funding for better services for confused young people.

I think mental health services are poorly funded anyway.

Young people who hate their bodies and feel 'wrong' need counselling and help to see they are not 'wrong' they don't need to change themselves. No need to bind breasts, take hormones, hate themselves. Stop with the ridiculous extreme stereotyping of what girls should look or behave like and if they don't fit that silly idea opt of what they are. Pretend they can change sex. I feel sad for them. More sad for the detransitioners. No need for social contagion to feel OK, they are ok.

Build self esteem, love themselves as they are biologically.

I didn't add a vote since I assumed most people would say more funding for mental health issues whatever they are.

We desperately need an enquiry to find out why so many young people hate their perfectly normal, healthy bodies so much, and fix the root cause.

Totally agree. It's sad.

I honestly think there are way more needy causes than this. If money was no object fair enough. If someone wants to access a private service good for them.
But the state must stop funding invasive procedures. I do not want to be liable through my taxes for mutilating anyone. I don't want to be funding mastectomies in healthy women, or unnecessary undercarriage surgery on anyone.

I meant more funding for mental health issues so people don't feel the need to take hormones or lop healthy breast tissue off etc. Help them feel they are important as they are.

Maybe talk to people who are trans because the op was just so naive and misinformed. It is not just a matter of hating a body and maybe needing a lil therapy to fix it. Is a shame the court ruling now made everyone into an armchair expert in trans issues.

M1n1eggs · 22/04/2025 16:45

No I’d rather the priority was ED services. It’s massively underfunded and leads to death. What families are having to go through is appalling.

Are you saying that the only effective therapy is based on physical interventions? What evidence base is there for that?

What's your evidence for the contrary?

Im saying people who are trans are not a little bit lost and 'therapy' will not 'fix' the problem. Their bodies are not 'perfectly normal' in their eyes and it's a super thick and patronising thing to say.
Hope one day someone invites pills for stupidity.

Just because people think something is true, doesn't make it true.

They might think there's something wrong with their body, they might really believe it, but they're wrong.

Health care services should not be lying to them and harming them.

We don't give people health care based on what they think they need. We give it to them based on actual assessed and proven clinical need.

letsallchant · 22/04/2025 18:57

glittercunt · 22/04/2025 16:57

Er, I asked first. @HerNeighbourTotoro said 'therapy will not fix the problem' and I'd like to know the evidence base for that statement. So far it's 'two people on a message board think so'.

I think it would really help if teenagers didn’t have such unfettered access to the internet and internet communities - and instead were able to spend time in-person in real life exploring other hobbit and interests.

That’s where they’re getting these ideas from in the first place.

countrysidedeficit · 22/04/2025 21:11

Giving people cross sex hormones and surgery because they don't conform to sexist stereotypes is the only "conversion therapy" in this scenario.

Would you also support gastric bands for anorexics?

People with eating disorders think there is something wrong with their bodies. Doesn't make it true though. We don't encourage them to change to further those beliefs by eating less.

Why is lopping healthy breasts off the correct way to help troubled young girls or often autistic girls. That's harmful. Maybe love themselves first as they are? Chest binding and pretending they are male furthers the lie. They can never change sex no matter how hard they try they will fail. Why set them up for failure.

Hiya

You've just described conversion therapy which is a big no no, friend!

Berrytea · 22/04/2025 23:04

I don’t think that mental health services are the answer and someone enforcing the idea that something is wrong with the way you are thinking about your circumstances isn’t helpful either.
Deprived areas, poverty , and generational trauma are some of the fundamental main things that need to be addressed before the other things. It will probably include a home that isn’t so comfortable to be in, an area that isn’t nice to be in, lack of services, exclusion from activities, not the best diet, etc. I think anyone would feel ill in those circumstances

No. You have that totally backwards.

So they need surgery and drugs to pretend to be a sex they aren't. Bizarre.

Would you suggest a person with eating disorder that might say they are too fat, eats less then or has surgery to get thinner to fix the problem of being wrong or fat. Wow.

Affirmation that they do indeed have a body problem and suggest chopping bits off and pretending they are something they aren't and will never be. Poor child.
