To wonder who is buying chocolate cereal

Who om each is buying Lion bar and Oreo cereal? See also lucky charms, nesquick and coco pops
These aren't breakfast foods (or any sort of food). I literally cannot imagine anyone thinking it is a reasonable way of feeding children?

Anyway OP, this is one of those situations where it’s not so much that you’re wrong in what you say, but that you’ve said it in such a way that you sound like an irredeemably sanctimonious little arsehole.

🤣🤣 that did make me chuckle!

OP, how about venison and cocoa pops altogether? A happy medium?

Kindersurprising · 21/04/2025 19:40

FoxRedPuppy · 21/04/2025 19:37

ADHD is a neurological condition and has nothing to do with what you have for breakfast.

Also, you do in fact sound like a fun sponge.

Yeah ‘fun sponge’ is always used by secretly guilty feeling parents who want to think feeding their kid rubbish means they love them and want to make them happy.

Je5585 · 21/04/2025 19:03

Better than no breakfast at all. Child poverty is at a high at the moment. Better to be full than not at all. Bit judgemental of you OP!

Do you honestly think that parents are buying chocolate cereal for kids because they can't afford to give them porridge, wheetabix or toast and peanut butter?

Do you feed you own kids food like this every day?

AhBiscuits · 21/04/2025 19:40

I buy them for my children. They're fine.

HoraceCope · 21/04/2025 19:40

probably grown ups are eating oreo cereals

Hobbitfeet32 · 21/04/2025 19:41

Blueyseviltwin · 21/04/2025 19:11

Porridge and fruit? Scrambled eggs? Wholemeal toast and pure nut butters?

I've never once fed my kids a breakfast cereal. I understand now why childhood obesity is so rife.

My kids have the odd ice cream, chocolate etc. I'm not a fun sponge but I just can't get over serving that as a meal before expecting concentration at school for example.

As for cost of living, porridge is much cheaper.

Porridge requires the facilities and skill to cook it. And yes there are people in the UK to have neither. Porridge also doesn’t taste that nice. I have a very healthy diet but couldn’t tolerate porridge unless I added sugar to it. As other posters have said, for some children something is better than nothing. And cereal with milk provides some vital nutrients for children in poverty.

trifficname · 21/04/2025 19:41

I have a confession, I also gave my children chocolate eggs this weekend op, I know, I know.

NotSoSunny · 21/04/2025 19:42

Ofc you’re a judgy GP.

Climb down from your high horse for a moment. Have you ever considered that people may not be educated about nutrition, battle to get their children to eat anything at all or maybe just lack time and/or money.

This… my girls had shit cereal every day before school… it’s all they would eat, and I’d rather that then nothing! They ate healthy lunches and dinners and are now very healthy 19 and 23 years olds

MayaPinion · 21/04/2025 19:43

Ooh, I love mini frosted shredded wheats as a snack. I bring a little ziplock bag of them into work most days - they’re excellent to munch on AND they keep your poops regular and lower your blood pressure. What’s not to like?

candyflossbabe · 21/04/2025 19:43

Acc0untant · 21/04/2025 18:59

I buy lion bar cereal and coco pops. For me. Since when was cereal just for children?

You must lead a sheltered life if you can't imagine anyone thinking they're a) breakfast foods and b) reasonable for children.

OP can imagine, they just want to project their smugness onto the rest of us by implying those cereals are the equivalent of feeding ourselves/our children etc rat poison 🙄

Isn’t there a saying “Everything in moderation” or “fed is best” cos with a neurodivergent child with food issues, I can say with certainty if my child would only eat coco pops or whatever for breakfast, then I’d be darn well shelving any of my ideal porridge with fruit ideas and making sure they were fed and not hungry as the priority!!

waitingforautumn · 21/04/2025 19:43

As a child I never understood why I was allowed jam for breakfast but not chocolate cereal.

IstayhomeonFridaynight · 21/04/2025 19:43

ThejoyofNC · 21/04/2025 19:19

I can 100% guarantee your kids will be the ones who pig out at birthdays parties or sneaky off to spend every pound they get on sweets when they're a bit older.

It's so sad to see and you are the cause of it.

I think nutritionists would disagree that early heathy eating habits lead to an adult life of Fry Bentos pies.

😂I'm thinking duck, wild salmon en croute, chocolate Krave cereal, porridge, yoghurt, a BBQ joint of pork and Tango.
Then when they arrive at school, a plain rice cake.

StScholastica · 21/04/2025 19:44

Lion bar cereal?? Wow, who knew?
I must get some!
Honestly OP, it's fine once in a while! You sound like my friend who melts Easter eggs and makes them into crispy cakes because they are homemade and more acceptable (less common).

WtafIsThat · 21/04/2025 19:07

Enlighten us, what should our children be eating?

I’m going to play ‘breakfast bingo!’ Someone do a shot when UPFs get mentioned.

Edited

Oh come on, anything except sugar cereals you can give them pasta if you want...or egg fried rice etc.

But "normal" non sugary options for breakfast;

Porridge - all varieties really
Eggs - scrambled, poached, dippy, omelette etc
Toast and butter/peanutbutter/avocado/tomatoes
Yogurt and berries
Kefir
Quesadillas/ cheese on toast

aylis · 21/04/2025 19:44

We occasionally buy coco pops or some Krave stuff my daughter likes, usually for a treat for a sleepover or sometimes just because we fancy coco pops. Sometimes we even buy pop tarts 👀

BatchCookBabe · 21/04/2025 19:39

I don't know why you're getting a hard time on here @Blueyseviltwin I enjoy chocolate, and don't see any harm in children having it now and again. But chocolate and cereal should never be in the same bowl, and chocolate cereal certainly shouldn't be fed to children. I agree with you. No wonder so many children/teens/people are obese now, when they're starting their day off by eating chocolate!

Cocopops are bad enough, but Oreo cereal? WTAF?! Shock

I (largely) agree with the OP too, but I think the reason she’s being given a hard time on here is because she’s worded her posts like a sanctimonious prick.

Hollietree · 21/04/2025 19:45

How is giving your kids the occasional treat of ice cream, birthday cake or a crumble any better than another parent occasionally giving their child cocopops as a treat breakfast?

Are you just generally superior to everyone else in all areas?

Tomatotater · 21/04/2025 19:45

I cant think of anything more disgusting than lion bar cereal, but I do love Coco pops. I dont buy it but when I'm in a hotel or at my mums ( she buys it for my kids) I scoff it!

TropicofCapricorn · 21/04/2025 19:45

waitingforautumn · 21/04/2025 19:43

As a child I never understood why I was allowed jam for breakfast but not chocolate cereal.

Id rather my kids have jam than chocolate crappy cereals

At least jam is pretty much just fruit and sugar, not the weird highly processed cereal shapes that are coloured and flavoured etc.

Next year, perhaps just give them medallions of venison?

Pineapplewaves · 21/04/2025 19:46

My kids have Chocolate Hoops for breakfast. If I make rice crispy cakes I use Coco Pops for extra chocolate. My DC also like chocolate wheetabix.

StScholastica · 21/04/2025 19:46

My DS ate a big bowl of tiramisu for breakfast. 😬 Sugar, fat and alcohol. We are truly common in this house.
