To wonder who is buying chocolate cereal

Who om each is buying Lion bar and Oreo cereal? See also lucky charms, nesquick and coco pops
These aren't breakfast foods (or any sort of food). I literally cannot imagine anyone thinking it is a reasonable way of feeding children?

Maybe because creating taboo foods just makes them more attractive to kids who will gorge themselves senseless as soon as they get chance? Same with takeaways like McDonald’s. My kids love a crappy breakfast cereal, but they get that once or twice a week tops - with a side of fruit and glass of water. Other breakfasts might be flaxseed muffins (homemade, wholemeal, banana), grilled cheese muffins, omelette, porridge, fruit & yoghurt with seeds. A couple of bowls of sugary cereal a week - combined with plenty of fresh fruit & veg and 95% home cooked meals - absolutely can be part of a healthy diet!

Flaxseed muffins sound like a great option. Do you have a recipe you can share?

I used to love Coco pops and bought them until recently
They changed them though so I no longer do

Oh no! I fancied them too just as a treat. What’s changed?

RubiesAndRaindrops · 21/04/2025 19:14

DH loves coco pops. I've seen oreo cereal used as a topping for ice cream, a bit of chocolatey crunch for texture I guess - not tried it myself though.

Okbyethen · 21/04/2025 19:14

My son has Krave most mornings (and no he's not obese) 😄🤷🏻‍♀️

MightAsWellBeGretel · 21/04/2025 19:15

Itsrainingatlast · 21/04/2025 19:13

I do. For my son, who is on medication which suppresses his appetite and he needs high calorie food first thing in the morning, because until the meds wear off mid afternoon, he won’t eat. A bowl
of sugary cereal, with full fat milk means he gets the calories he needs quickly before the meds kick in each morning, you judgemental fool.

Yes, because that applies to majority of children, of course.

Generally, child obesity is on the rise.

SouthLondonMum22 · 21/04/2025 19:15

Me! DS loves a bowl of coco pops at the weekend.

Porridge and fruit? Scrambled eggs? Wholemeal toast and pure nut butters?

I've never once fed my kids a breakfast cereal. I understand now why childhood obesity is so rife.

My kids have the odd ice cream, chocolate etc. I'm not a fun sponge but I just can't get over serving that as a meal before expecting concentration at school for example.

As for cost of living, porridge is much cheaper.

Childhood obesity has various causes. Giving them the odd bowl of cereal isn't one of them.
Children need to learn to self regulate and not see food as forbidden. Mine had managed treats and were allowed certain cereals in moderation. They're now healthy adults and have learned to eat well.
I'll never forget kids coming round to our house and ramming their faces with biscuits because they weren't allowed them at home. Mine could take one, and leave the rest.

How do you know OP's name?
Or are you peddling misogynism?

2 minutes, that’s less than I thought.

Costco sell it in packs of 4!

Earlier I bought me and the DC a Costco pizza (if you go, you’ll know the ones I mean). Report me to social care why not.

I bought one of those pizzas once when I first had my own place and was having a couple of friends over, had to cut it in half to get it in the oven!

Octavia64 · 21/04/2025 19:15

Mmm chocolate cereal.

one of the shit…

one of the many shit things about being lactose intolerant is that chocolate cereal and nut milks just does not taste the same.

I miss being young when I could eat chocolate cereal and milk.

Blueyseviltwin · 21/04/2025 19:15

No food is banned in our house. My kids often eat a yoghurt and spaghetti bolognese simultaneously. There is no food they don't eat. They eat spicy curries, veg, soups. Lentils, venison, salmon.

They love food. They have ice cream at the beach, we make crumbles in the winter but I see so many kids that are obese, constipated and fussy eaters (I'm a GP) that I don't understand not feeding them better.

I also think it's alarming in the UK that not eating coco pops and chicken nuggets and waffles is seen as fun police not a good parenting decision.

I buy coco pops and wheetos for myself on occassion. Not always for breakfast, a bowl of cocopops and milk on a monday night once everyone has gone to bed is heaven 😂
My nephew like lucky charms, hes 15, he doesnt eat them very often but will occassionally buy the imported ones for 15 quid a box with his pocket money.

I sometimes get my kids a box of something they've been begging for all year, during school holidays, one box here and there and once they're gone theyre gone, its not a regular purchase.

I draw the line at frosties 😂

Zezet · 21/04/2025 19:16

Me. They go on top of the Weetabix.

Itsdefinitelyme · 21/04/2025 19:16

My dd eats these type of cereals for breakfast. She is autistic and it’s just a good day if she eats something so I’m not fussy. She likes the oreo one and coco pops

Whilst you were polishing your halo I bought some crunchy nut cornflakes last week 🤤

We had crunchy nut clusters. Lush!

ADHD meds then? So a bowl of porridge or eggs would be much better for him?

Flaxseed muffins sound like a great option. Do you have a recipe you can share?

So I use a generic banana bread recipe (you can add oats if you like, but I add 2/3 tbsp milled flaxseed, a couple tbsp chia seeds and some mixed seeds). If the mixture is dry add more milk (I like Greek yoghurt for extra protein). I also add dark or white chocolate chips but don’t tell the OP. The banana can be substituted for canned pumpkin. I vary the spices depending on how I’m feeling (nutmeg is great with pumpkin muffins). I also halve the sugar the recipe calls for (especially if using very ripe bananas) but do this to taste!

JandamiHash · 21/04/2025 19:11

My kids. I’m not neurotic and don’t have a complex about food or an eating disorder that I rub off into my kids so food isn’t demonised in this house, it’s enjoyed. Both lean and very sporty and eat like a scabby horse, and very happy too.

I feel bad for the odd growing up in households where food is demonised. What a horrible complex to pass on to your kids.

I agree.

Enigma53 · 21/04/2025 19:17

Me! Bloody love them! They are my” go to cereal” whilst on chemo! 😋

A yoghurt and spaghetti bolognese simultaneously. Now I’m aghast

Soonenough · 21/04/2025 19:17

@Blueyseviltwin You lost me at the mention of venison. 😅

CandyCane457 · 21/04/2025 19:18

I’m 36 and love coco pops for my breakfast 🤷🏻‍♀️

FleurDeFleur · 21/04/2025 19:18

@Blueyseviltwin what party food do you serve?
Do your kids eat at other parties?

StarShapedWindow · 21/04/2025 19:18

Father Christmas brings my DC Lucky Charms every year

BabyRuthless · 21/04/2025 19:18

Have you thought that, maybe, just maybe, it is bought more for a treat breakfast rather than an every day breakfast? I love the chocolate cereal that Tesco do, but it's not something I'd have often.
