To wonder who is buying chocolate cereal

Who om each is buying Lion bar and Oreo cereal? See also lucky charms, nesquick and coco pops
These aren't breakfast foods (or any sort of food). I literally cannot imagine anyone thinking it is a reasonable way of feeding children?

People like you have already fucked up cocopops and most soft drinks.

JournalistEmily · 22/04/2025 19:23

People in their 20s!

RosyDaysAhead · 22/04/2025 19:24

Omg op! All you are doing is showing them that when they can afford to buy their own foods and make their own choices that these are options they never were given!

my mum is a fitness health freak and did this to my sister and I as children. I’m now grossly overweight and fighting a sugar addiction and my sister has borderline anorexia and food anxiety!

my son however was given the choice of a bit of everything in moderation is fine. Now as a teenager he snacks on fruit and olives, rarely spend money on chocolate. His Easter eggs from Sunday still remain untouched as he “doesn’t fancy chocolate”. He cooks himself fresh pasta and healthy veg sauces when he’s hungry rather than heading for maccies like most of his mates.

i wish I didnt have the food issues I have, but at least I broke the chain with my son.

I was tired and messaging between tasks.

I am not all that bothered if I'm believed or not. I'm a GP, my wife is a teacher so we regularly have conversations about children/ health/ development. We also have 3 (adopted) children (1,3,4) who have a range of needs due to their histories. I have a very strong interest in child health and development.

Poverty is a huge problem but largely due to lack of education and beliefs around food I.e. children won't eat porridge/ lentils/ stews etc. So "need" to be feed coco pops and nuggets.

We have lived in a number of countries and (apart from the States) the UK has amongst the worst knowledge of diet.

It’s called lazy parenting. Half of the crap they feed their kids is more expensive anyway!

Get up with enough time?

Treat mealtimes as part of the day that needs structuring in, rather than rushed through.

It can be made overnight in a slow cooker. I’ve only done it once, I buy the Ready Brek pouches for myself (full of sugar but I love them ).

This is the recipe I use: https://tasty.co/recipe/vegan-pulled-pork-sandwiches

It is quite time consuming but the result is really delicious!

I use tinned jackfruit for mine - just whatever tins they have in the Asian supermarket near me (and also have now seen it in Sainsbury’s but haven’t tried it - expect all tins are broadly the same though!).

These look really great. I'll definitely be trying this out in the next couple of weeks. Thanks!

@maybein2022 Here you go! We started them in lockdown and now on thread thirteen which is both a crying shame and a lifeline. I knew about ED's of course but the lived reality was like nothing I could have envisoned. Having these threads full of people who know exactly the levels of despair, fear, anger, grief that you go through was unbelievable. People join, leave, return, ask for support on day1 and are often giving support back on day 2! A couple of us meet up each year in London for the Eating Disorders march - I believe our numbers for the MN contingent for this years march have grown. I don't post much on the board at the moment but I always say we march for those who are still in the trenches. Do say hi on the board if you feel up to it!

Students who are stoned?
People who are addicted to sugar?
People who just eat only a few as a small snack akin to a couple of biscuits?
Obese fuckers with zero self control?
People who like the taste?

Why are obese people ‘fuckers’?

RocketDog101 · 22/04/2025 19:32

I do 👍 choco hoops, as eaten on a weekend (one bowl limit as usually have eggs later in the morning 😉) as a treat...why not?! We've all heard of moderation, right? Here's a shocker - at Christmas there is no expense and can choose gasp any cereal they like for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day breakfast (this is before having a selection of pastries and hot chocolate/juice!). Youngest usually has KitKat; middle child likes Cinnamon Churros and eldest is partial to Oreo 😀

So I shout from the roof tops...I AM A BUYER OF CHOCOLATE CEREAL and MY CHILDREN EAT CRAP FOR BREAKFAST but only at weekends!

Personally I like the equally sugary Honey Nut Clusters with warm milk 🤪 or Honey Nut Cornflakes...unfortunately I usually forget they exist and are often stale by the time I get to them (or a child has had for weekend cereal 😡)

*Disclaimer
I do not judge a parent who's self or child eats sugar laden cereal responsibly 🤪

blueleavesgreensky · 22/04/2025 19:32

OP meant kindly and with perhaps a small roll of the eye, your dc are all 5 and under.

Come back when they are 12-16 and we can see how your ‘get up early and make time for breakfast’ theory goes.

I’m obese and a fucker to be fair.

BornSandyDevotional · 22/04/2025 19:37

My husband was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 bowel cancer. He's awaiting his treatment pathway currently. But has to eat a very restrictive low fibre diet.

Coco Pops with a banana in is about all he can stomach at the moment.

So, yeah, we buy them.

2to5 · 22/04/2025 19:37

LeaveTaking · 21/04/2025 18:59

Heathens.

My DH likes a bit of crunchy but for pudding. Evening pudding, not breakfast pudding.

CRUNCHY BUT 😅

celticprincess · 22/04/2025 19:37

Hahah. Mine like the chocolate pillows from Aldi. They don’t have it everyday. We also have other choices. They often don’t eat breakfast but might have it as a supper snack if we’ve eaten tea early. They also like oats with fruit and Greek yoghurt. So variety is key. I’ve never liked chocolate for breakfast. I need plainer cereal like bra flakes before I can eat anything more.

oh and whilst I’m at it I’ll confess to the post from the other week where the lady couldn’t believe what she used to eat for lunch - sandwich, crisps and a biscuit. Well that’s what mine have most days but they’ll also include some fruit or some cheese. They take packed lunch less now at secondary and too much to carry so god knows what they’re buying from the canteen!!

OneTC · 22/04/2025 19:39

bra flakes don't sound great but whatever works for you

LeaveTaking · 22/04/2025 19:39

2to5 · 22/04/2025 19:37

CRUNCHY BUT 😅

What can I say. We go all out with our cereal time.

I can only assume that’s why OP says they’re not suitable for children.

spring252 · 22/04/2025 19:41

I used to absolutely love crunchy nut cornflakes, I could eat them all day! Then i realised they were 35% sugar or something ridiculous and weaned myself off them. If I'm going to eat a ton of sugar then I want it to be a delicious desert not some cereal!

Bloozie · 22/04/2025 19:43

Thanks for signalling your virtue. Unfortunately I have no fucks to give right now, but I'll keep your details on file in case any come up.

I don't know if you are being ironic or not but either way you are hilarious!

I’m noting the irony of life and other people exercising their really not very good choices, even while you believe that you have done absolutely all you can to model much better choices!

axolotlfloof · 22/04/2025 19:53

This thread is a hilarious middle class lecture.
Most kids will never eat duck, steak and smoked salmon.
I buy my (skinny, cycle 5 miles to school) kids chocolate cereal if they want it.
They eat a normal varied diet without smoked salmon or duck.

RocketDog101 · 22/04/2025 19:54

Blueyseviltwin · 21/04/2025 19:15

No food is banned in our house. My kids often eat a yoghurt and spaghetti bolognese simultaneously. There is no food they don't eat. They eat spicy curries, veg, soups. Lentils, venison, salmon.

They love food. They have ice cream at the beach, we make crumbles in the winter but I see so many kids that are obese, constipated and fussy eaters (I'm a GP) that I don't understand not feeding them better.

I also think it's alarming in the UK that not eating coco pops and chicken nuggets and waffles is seen as fun police not a good parenting decision.

The thing is, as a buyer of cereal, my children will eat what you claim are healthy meals as well (middle child would live off sushi if I could afford it!) One was eating raw mange tout and carrots with their 'sausage and mash' as didn't fancy potato or peas 🤷‍♀️ we have plenty of fruit, veg, nuts, grains and protein (boiled eggs for snacking for my ever hungry pre-teen!) and are far from obese (youngest was under a dietician as only ate raw fruit and veg, nothing else! Now they looked unhealthy!!!) Whilst chocolate given at Easter and Christmas lays stale and uneaten on top of the fridge.

But allas, a weekly bowl of treat cereal or pastries at breakfast in the holidays and I'm doing my children a dis-service. Or, I'm trying to make sure they're not pushed into an ED like I was because "all food has a clause" and "if you eat a burger, you must run an extra 10 miles to burn it off". I aim to teach 'moderation' and 'there are no bad foods' and 'listen to your body'.

I believe many parents have the same belief 🤷‍♀️ no 'reasonable' parent sets out to harm their child's attitude to a sensible diet. I see more young people in Wagamama of a weekend than I ever frequented as a young person 😉

Rhaenys · 22/04/2025 19:54

I don’t eat dairy now but I used to love Krave. Cookie Crisp was one of my favourites as a child. The Lion and Reese’s cereal were so disappointing though. I remember them being quite salty?

OneTC · 22/04/2025 19:23

People like you have already fucked up cocopops and most soft drinks.

This is true.
Have self control instead of low sugar everything.

QueefQueen80s · 22/04/2025 19:59

Love the responses, judgy OP has had her arse handed to her.
These faux wide eyed incredulous questions.. “who on earth is buying chocolate cereal” “who would eat at mcdonalds” “who buys the tacky Christmas decs” “who goes on holiday to benidorm”

hate to break it to you OP but most people in the UK are outside your judgy middle class bubble.

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 22/04/2025 20:00

I buy cocoa pops and chocolate pillows for one of my teen daughters but bulk it out with a chopped banana. She doesn't have it everyday so I don't see it as a problem. They're a lot nicer than stringy shredded wheat which is unbearable without sugar so it probably works out the same in the end
