To wonder who is buying chocolate cereal

Who om each is buying Lion bar and Oreo cereal? See also lucky charms, nesquick and coco pops
These aren't breakfast foods (or any sort of food). I literally cannot imagine anyone thinking it is a reasonable way of feeding children?

My autistic son eats Oreo cereal every day, he has a very restricted diet and I’m so happy to be getting iron, vitamins and folic acid in him every day!

lifeonmars100 · 21/04/2025 19:52

not got a clue and never give it a thought. Having said that and expended a bit of mental energy it could be anyone. Maybe adults buy them for themselves, maybe parents get them for their kids for the occasional treat , maybe some parents think they are a reasonable food stuff, who knows...

Are kids not allowed treats? Must they only eat healthy things all the time?

I think the problem is when children get fed them everyday (I know some will have their specific reasons but many don’t apart from ease).

EJ2 · 21/04/2025 19:53

Me! Mostly because it was banned when I was a child. Usually for dinner when I don’t want to cook.

delilabell · 21/04/2025 19:53

My children do! Sometimes they choose cocopops, sometimes weetabix and sometimes choose toast instead. They also have fruit and yogurt as part of their breakfast.
This will really horrify you.....at the weekend they sometimes have ring donuts for breakfast!!!
You say no food is seen as good or bad and that they can choose what they want but you don't give them the opportunity.
I have friends who's childrens diets are better than mine and friends who's chikdrens are worse. I do not judge. I think that's the thing how obnoxious you come across about it.

ttcat37 · 21/04/2025 19:53

How long can you make a roast chicken last OP?
Do you love a massive salad?

Tortielady · 21/04/2025 19:54

We didn't have Coco Pops when I was a child on grounds of affordability. The same with Rice Krispies, Sugar Puffs, Sugar Frosties, or best of all, Ricicles, which for a while had Magic Roundabout characters on its packaging. Now how cool was that? My parents must have had nerves of steel to keep saying no. 😁

Most of the time, we had porridge, toast cornflakes or Weetabix. There weren't as many big supermarkets around in the 1970s, which meant fewer own brands at lower prices. Having said that, the branding was often the point, so if it wasn't Kelloggs, you weren't going to see Dougal gazing at you while you ate your Ricicles. Nowadays, it wouldn't matter if Dougal, Ermintrude and the rest tangoed round the kitchen, the thought of sugary cereals makes my teeth hurt. But then? Gimme.

lunaemma · 21/04/2025 19:54

Me, for me. I really like it with Greek yoghurt

I'm interested to know how long she can make a duck last. I've seen them in the park, some of them are a bit scrawny.

Purplecatshopaholic · 21/04/2025 19:55

Me, and I give no fucks. Nothing wrong with the occasional bowl of coco pops.

If obesity was a fairly minor issue here and it was unusual for kids to have rotten teeth, then I would say YABU, because a treat is fine and everyone deserves one now and then.

But look around you. Some of the kids at DD school honestly look like James Corden before he started the weight loss. Massive bellies, huge arms and legs, boys with what I can only describe as ‘womanly’ shapes. We have a real problem with kids needing teeth removed as they’re rotten or decaying. What’s happening to our kids is criminal - once you’re on the road to obesity as a child it is very very hard to row back. Not to mention the health complications which are many and life threatening.

So, YANBU. These shit ‘cereals’ are designed to pique the interest of kids (cartoons on the front), and I think we all know nobody is buying a box once a year as a very rare one-off treat. Any parent who buys them on a regular basis is failing their child in my opinion as they’re full of crap.

I’ve had cereal for breakfast for 41 years and my fair share of junk food growing up and I’m still wearing my size 6 jeans as we speak with a full set of pearly whites. There’s a lot more than cereal that defines an adult.
I wonder if you’ve heard of puppy fat?

Blueyseviltwin · 21/04/2025 19:17

ADHD meds then? So a bowl of porridge or eggs would be much better for him?

I sincerely hope you’re not actually a GP, as I fervently hope a GP understands neurodiverse children often do not eat food that some may deem ‘better’ for them just because those people deem them ‘better’….

Springhassprungxx · 21/04/2025 19:56

Not me op - terrible start to the day imo!

Hoppinggreen · 21/04/2025 19:57

Might try and shove pulled pork and wedges into DS in the 10 minutes I have to feed him before he goes to school on Wednesday morning.
Neither of my DC have ever been keen on breakfast, they rarely eat before 10/11am so if my DS agrees to eat something before school he can have it.
He actually doesn't really like any cereal these days but I can sometimes get him to eat Rice Crispies

Sesma · 21/04/2025 19:57

All that duck, venison, pork and steak, doesn't sound good for the bowels

SchoolDilemma17 · 21/04/2025 19:58

Blueyseviltwin · 21/04/2025 19:15

No food is banned in our house. My kids often eat a yoghurt and spaghetti bolognese simultaneously. There is no food they don't eat. They eat spicy curries, veg, soups. Lentils, venison, salmon.

They love food. They have ice cream at the beach, we make crumbles in the winter but I see so many kids that are obese, constipated and fussy eaters (I'm a GP) that I don't understand not feeding them better.

I also think it's alarming in the UK that not eating coco pops and chicken nuggets and waffles is seen as fun police not a good parenting decision.

I agree with you but we are in the minority in MN and in the UK. Only recently there was a post where most people agreed that going to McDonald’s with the kids once a week is completely normal and acceptable.

Baabaapurplesheep · 21/04/2025 19:58

My kids chose some for a birthday treat! They’ve had Kit Kat cereal on holiday as well

I am a right judge pants when it comes to feeding kids.

I walked down the cereal aisle today and was aghast that such rubbish is being fed to kids. (Healthy adults I also judge a bit but if you have a normal bmi and an otherwise good diet then it's up to you.).

I just don't understand why you wouldn't want to give your kids a healthy diet, especially to start the day.

I would never judge people in that way, I do not have the time, the energy or the inclination. I do sometimes wonder how on earth parents are managing to afford a healthy diet for their kids given the ever rising cost of food. I was piss poor when my child was little and often skipped or reduced my meals so that I could feed them. it must be even more difficult these days and it is easier to fill them up with cheap stuff when you are struggling to pay all the bills.

DurbevillesGirl2 · 21/04/2025 19:59

Size 6 fatties like me.

Overtheatlantic · 21/04/2025 19:59

We had Count Chocula back in the day. 😍

toodledo · 21/04/2025 19:59

Op I actually agree with you - it's a horrible way to start a child's day (esp if done every day...) I think there a lot of defensive comments here. I'm all for natural muesli with no added sugar, or German rye bread with almond butter, for my LB

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 21/04/2025 19:59

I can't stand them, but it's more to do with the chocolate milk than anything else. I love chocolate and milk/ice cream/cream but chocolate flavoured anything is 🤢.

For that reason they aren't in our house, DH can barely stomach breakfast so he doesn't care what we have in, and therefore DD will, by default, not get them til she can get them herself. Which is basically how it worked when I was a kid and I still dislike them, so fingers crossed.

But, people like them, they get kids fed of a morning. They aren't evil.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 21/04/2025 20:00

I let my kids eat what they want, in moderation, admittedly, but no food is off-limits.

They have a varied diet and eat all different things for breakfast. Until recently, they were opting for Lion cereal but my eldest has moved onto granola which probably has far more sugar in it!

Spareincoming · 21/04/2025 20:00

Me. For me. 42 years of eating coco-pops.
The children can have their weetabix crispy minis, that we’ve convinced them is just for children because they’re called minis…
