Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Happyspendingthedayinthegarden · 21/04/2025 15:11

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

Don't tell me you ingest Calgon!!! 😫

Washing machines live longer with Calgon

Now tell me you did not sing that in your head 😂

Yeah, it was gross. I remember asking my mum if it was normal. Nope!

Was it "No dear, we don't do that in our house. Come along".

I do this, as onions, stuffing & other things not good for dogs.

I maintain that there is no problem with allowing my dog to lick the dishes from residual gravy etc & then putting them in the dishwasher on a high temp.

My mistake was allowing Step Grandchildren who don't normally stay with us (as live abroad & have maids who pack dishwasher etc & rather a new experience for them) were accompanying step GC who often stay & regard packing the dishwasher as their contribution to the meal. It was the GC who normally spend time with us who said 'Oh - <dog name> usually licks the dishes before Granny puts them in the dishwasher', Scraped the residue into the food caddy (to be collected & composted) & put the plates down for the dog to lick That's what they do at my house as well at home-they have a dog & a mother who's a senior nurse in the local hospital.

But DIL blew her top.

I make no apologies - my GC are very healthy & I maintain that my dishes are totally safe for them to eat from. There is a lot of evidence that children brought up in a house with pets are less likely to develop allergies.

You have a full thread of people telling you that for non-dog people (and some dog people as well) it feels gross and unclean.
You are breaking the convention of separating human eating and dog feeding.
Maybe it isn't harmful, but it is weird and makes people uncomfortable.

It sounds you don't like DIL anyway, so I suppose you can keep being proud of it.

Btw, your dishwasher does 90 Celsius? I thought that a typical max temperature is 70 Celsius.

And here's another, because I'm cruel like that. You can't get quicker than a Kwik fit fitter.

BakewellGin1 · 21/04/2025 21:39

🤢 disgusting
My GP used to have dogs and cats who they allowed to drink from cups and eat from plates.
All I can remember is finding random hairs on my cups and plates.

No pets sharing any plates, bowls etc here. They also don't share beds, towels etc

I'm not a clean freak but this has to be maintained along with regular hand washing, hygiene in the kitchen.

For this very reason I only eat where I am certain hygiene is maintained

DoYouReally · 21/04/2025 21:40

For the sake of your relationship with your grandchildren, you need to accept that a lot of people consider your approach to the dogs unhygienic and off putting.

A lot of people think you are wrong and whether you agree or not, don't risk of your relationship with your son and his children by being too stubborn.

Ohnobackagain · 21/04/2025 21:41

Sorry @Happyspendingthedayinthegarden if it doesn’t run straight after the dog has licked the plates then that’s making something grim potentially even worse - even on hot wash sometimes dry stuff doesn’t get dissolved and fully clean.

I remember the mum was german. So little me assumed it was what german mums did 😆

Doesn't bother me at all but then I'm not particularly worried about germs.

I probably wouldn't allow my dog to do it in front of guests though.

Exactly, it’s not right to let the dogs lick the plates in front of (before) the guests have a go…..😉 (Sorry, deliberate misconstruing of post)

My dishwasher washes at a higher temperature than the hot water heater delivers hot water to the sink so would get dog licked crockery cleaner than washing it ‘by hand’. I can’t be arsed to keep a separate set of washing and drying up equipment for our cats’ bowls, and make sure they don't 'contaminate' each other, so they go into the dishwasher.

The cats rarely manage to lick the crockery before it goes into the dishwasher but if they did I wouldn’t worry. I’ve managed to stay alive for 50+ years since having dirty arse licking cats in the house. 😉

Those of you who think it's YUK that's fine - everyone is entitled to their opinions & that's the good thing about MN. I asked for opinions & boy, did I get them. - thank you to everyone who gave them.

I honestly don't see the issue letting my dog lick the residue off the plates as long as they're washed properly afterwards.

My dog doesn't have fleas or worms as she is regularly treated.

My GC hug her & kiss her. My dog doesn't beg when we're eating, she's not allowed on beds (although when staying GC encourage her & I tell them 'no' not allowed), she knows she's not allowed to lick faces &, although a cousin of mine encourages her to do so, she won't as she's been taught not to.

I'm not going to engage with this conversation any further. Thank you everyone for your input - it's been an interesting conversation.

I'm actually not too fussed about the whole hygiene thing - I'm sure the dishwasher would clean them sufficiently. In my table etiquette understanding it's rude for humans to lick their plates - just bad table manners. To lay pots and plates on the floor for animals to lick is just a big massive no.
If I saw someone do this I too would be horrified because it's not something I have ever seen nor would I believe that it was an acceptable thing to do.
But fine crack on but don't be surprised if other people disagree with it and think it's gross.

Happyspendingthedayinthegarden · 21/04/2025 15:26

I didn't think about it.

Dog waits in kitchen for the plates & I did what I normally do, scaped the fatty stuff off & put the plates down for her to lick clean. I thought as long as washed at a high temp there would be no problem. Ironically enough she was encouraging my dog to 'kiss' her children on the face which I said she had been trained not to do as we all know how she cleans her 'Bits'.

These responses are unhinged. What on earth do you think is going to happen if a dog licks a plate which is then washed at a high temperature? Dogs lick all sorts of things in houses 😂Mine licks most plates and we are very rarely ill

ohdearagain2 · 21/04/2025 22:01

I have ceolic's disease - we are told to get our own set of cooking pans so gluten has never touched our cooking equipment..... dishwashers are only as good as the person stacking them - sorry I would not eat at your house either.

I'm not sure why you bothered asking in the first place 🤷‍♀️. You're clearly going to take absolutely no notice of anything, and carry on with your grotty habit.

OnTheBoardwalk · 21/04/2025 22:19

I wash the cat dishes with mine (they have better food than me) and am also convinced the dishwasher, even on a short wash is hot enough to deal with it

what I don’t do though is feed them off any human plates or let people (mother) feed them off plates as I don’t want the begging and hanging around for the plates to be finished with

Before I got a dog, I always said they would never be allowed in the bedroom, would never be given tit-bits, would never eat off our plates.

Then I accidentally got a dog (I fostered it for seven days as an emergency, and he stayed for over thirteen years).

I had a stair-gate across my bedroom door to prevent the dog coming in. And it worked. I also had an ingrowing toe-nail and after what felt like the millionth time of tripping on the bottom of the gate and stubbing my very, very poorly toe, I ripped the stair-gate from the doorway and decided there was nothing I could catch from the dog that would match the pain in my foot. And added to which, the neighbours were complaining about my language.

Tessiebear2023 · 21/04/2025 22:26

In my rational mind, it's obviously not a big deal and your plates are perfectly fine to eat from. However, if I actually saw this it would make me gip (much like when I see a dog on the sofa with his butt hole all over the cushions). Everyone has different tolerances for these things.

I think she has overreacted, but maybe don't do that in front of house guests again. The only way you can salvage the situation is to tell her that although you see no issue with it, you don't want to make her uncomfortable in your house so you've stopped doing it. It's really not worth falling out over - do it for your son and grandchild, not her.

TrixieFatell · 21/04/2025 22:31

This reminds me of a guy I really fancied. Until I saw him one day at the pub with his dog and he was letting it lick him on (and in) his mouth. Still makes me gip to this day, thank the lord I never got the chance to kiss him before I knew he did that.

OuchyEars · 21/04/2025 22:32

GoldenRosebee · 21/04/2025 19:21

Americans often drop F (fahrenheit) and just say X degrees.

Brits often drop the C (Celcius) and just say X degrees.

But why would you type out "degrees" when you could just type a single letter and it would give more not less information.

FYI British dishwashers definitely state temperatures in degrees Celcius.

Yeah, that's grim. I do not like dogs to lick me in ANY way. If I pat or stoke them I only do so if I know I can wash my hands after.

ThisIsItNowOrNever · 21/04/2025 23:17

Absolutely revolting. I would have exactly the same reaction than your DIL. I'd never set foot again in your house.

Loki64 · 21/04/2025 23:18

I have a dog and adore dogs.

I caught my dog licking a playe once. It got thrown away. Its absolutely rancid.
