Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

Absolutely rank. Dog owners have the lowest standards of hygiene, as proven by so many of them thinking this is ok. Filthy tramps.

Lots of dog owners on this thread think it is rank too.

They do! I can confirm the presence of many non-tramps.

'I make no apologies - my GC are very healthy & I maintain that my dishes are totally safe for them to eat from. There is a lot of evidence that children brought up in a house with pets are less likely to develop allergies.'

But you repulsed your guests, doesn't that bother you?

We can't change your poor hygiene standards but at least try to hide it just you know for basic social etiquette?

Maybe save the awful habits for when you don't have guests.

No, not OK. Plates have microcracks. But on second thoughts - you have no idea what we are eating when eating out. Scores of hepatitis positive food servers, food preparation technicians, etc. etc. Scary to give it a proper thought.

But as far as we know no one has contracted hepatitis from a microcrack in a plate. So it's not really scary at all, because it's not really a risk - because food gets cleaned. All sorts of things end up on plates that then get washed and re used and we've all managed not to die from it so far

Sarah2891 · 22/04/2025 09:56

Absolutely gross. I never let my dog do this.

ItsUpToYou · 22/04/2025 10:14

I wouldn’t even want to eat from a plate that I witnessed a human licking, let alone a dog.

GasPanic · 22/04/2025 10:27

It's pretty horrible. Dog saliva is full of all sorts of nasty bacteria, that's why they have dog breath. Probably because they eat shit quite literally.

And not everything comes out of the dishwasher clean and sterilised. Dishwashers aren't perfect.

Watching a family member eating off the bone put me off wings for life. It was just so eugh yeah I can’t deprive it but it’s ingrained this horrible imagine.

I can butcher an animal though not a problem but eat wings or ribs? No thank you.

Gloriia · 22/04/2025 11:25

'we've all managed not to die from it so far'

It isn't about not dying more about bacteria causing illnesses.

Also it's the aesthetics of letting pets use the same plates that adults do.

Would you eat your cornflakes from a dogs bowl even if it had been in a dishwasher? I wouldn't.

It also gives a glimpse of poor training. If dogs are licking humans pots and pans I bet they're licking table tops an kitchen surfaces too.

Gloriia · 22/04/2025 11:26

'I can butcher an animal though not a problem'

Why would you?!

Because we used to process animals for pet feed. 🤷🏻‍♀️

ChompinCrocodiles · 22/04/2025 11:33

We never do this - but tbph, that's just because ddog has lots of intolerances and is on special food so pretty much nothing we eat would be safe for her.

Hypothetically though, i'd have no problem eating off a plate my dog had licked and then had been through a dishwasher.

When our dishwasher finishes you can't even pick up a mug or plate for a couple of minutes they're that hot - I'd be comfortable that any doggy germs would be dealt with.

elfendom · 22/04/2025 13:21

But it has to be remembered that in a dishwasher, not only is the temperature of the water very high, the detergents used are harsh and the washing action exceptionally vigorous. In combination of all these factors, the vast majority of anything bad is unlikely to survive in dangerous numbers. oh dear, a dishwasher is not a steriliser and what on earth do you mean by dangerous numbers, all you need is one bacteria replicating.

Tessiebear2023 · 22/04/2025 13:29

We're all guilty of doing slightly gross stuff and being ok with it. I was letting my rabbit have a few bites of my apple yesterday, then carried on eating it. However, I wouldn't do this in front of a guest, and certainly not a child, so that they can witness/pick up my bad habits!

In fact, if I did this in front of my niece's little daughter I know damn fine I'd get a telling off, and my niece would be within her rights.

I think there are two aspects here. It's not unreasonable to do slightly gross things with our own pets in the privacy of our homes (that's our own personal choice), but we shouldn't parade these bad habits in front of others and expect them to be ok with it, especially not when there's kids involved.

I think pet food is readily available. You make it sound like you personally go about catching and slaughtering animals or do you mean you work in a slaughterhouse? 🤮😬

Smallmercies · 21/04/2025 22:11

I'm not sure why you bothered asking in the first place 🤷‍♀️. You're clearly going to take absolutely no notice of anything, and carry on with your grotty habit.

So foolish too and stubborn. Despite the majority opinion (and OP asked for them), she is willing to jeopardise important family relationships for what? To prove she knows best, i suppose. Crack on with your dirty habits OP as that seems to be all you are interested in.

TeaIsNice · 22/04/2025 13:40

eeeeww no and I'm a dog owner. any leftover bits go on his plate - which I handwash with a separate brush after all other dishes have been done

Jevarakh · 22/04/2025 13:58

I was out walking my dog and it encountered another dog, which started to have a crap. My dog ate the crap as it emerged from the other dog's arse before it even hit the ground. This made me throw up. Then both dogs eagerly tucked in to the pool of vomit.

Don't let such vile things lick your plates.

Well you certainly know how to make a point 🫣

And that's enough internet for today.

I mean we used to pick up the already dead but not fit for human food chain due to cause of death not fitting in the nice box, farm animals direct from the farm and process for a raw food diet for animals. Sometimes we didn’t butcher as they were fed whole such as piglets and lambs.

I am a huge dog lover but that's grim. I wouldn't want to eat anything at your house either!

90 deg C will kill just about anything.

No domestic dishwasher reaches this temperature.

Plus that is categorically not true, ask any infection control specialist.
