Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

My husband's grandparents let the dog do this and it almost makes me puke everytime. Absolutely rank.

Has anyone pointed out that most standard dishwashers don’t have a 90 degree (C) wash cycle…? Though they might reach near that in the rinse / dry cycle So these dishes could only have been washed at 60 degrees 🤮

I let my dog lick my face so I really can’t talk 🤣

Sadly if a dog licked my face, hands, arms etc I'd be covered in welt like hives so it's a huge no from me & they'd be getting nowhere near my plates & cutlery 😐

Do you use a separate disposable cloth?

No! I don’t use a cloth. A squirt of Ecover,
rubber gloves, hot water, rub,rub,rinse!

I do use kitchen towel to dry though.

DIL has overreacted and flouncing off after being hosted all day is incredibly rude. Her husband sounds like a drip tbh.

However, I have a bigger issue with people licking plates and bowls. Some really do people have appalling table manners.

pigsDOfly · 21/04/2025 19:43

A dishwasher doesn't sterilise. 90 degrees isn't hot enough to sterilise the plates.

I love my dog but there's no way I'd share my tableware with her. She has her own bowls and she eats out of those. I wouldn't want to eat off anything she's eaten from even if it's been thorough scrubbed. It's just unpleasant.

I also don't give my dog human food: the salt, the onions and the grease in the average roast dinner makes it unsuitable for dogs.

I made an awesome lamb roast yesterday and damn right I licked the plate.

That’s disgusting

Bunchymcbunchface · 21/04/2025 19:47

Phahaha is this the right thread to announce that (some) horsey ladies wash their horses bits - that’s the metal part of a bridle that goes in the horses mouth ……in the dishwasher too.

ZepherinDrouhin · 21/04/2025 15:35

If you know how your dog cleans her bits then why are you letting her lick your crockery?

Plenty of humans engage in this too 😁

Yes, I did, several times. My dishwasher washers at 70'C on "intensive", but I was just reading on the Finish website that all domestic dishwashers should reach around 82'C on the final rinse on any cycle, to make the contents "safe" [sic].

I also pointed out that the harsh detergents and vigorous cleaning action of the dishwasher also goes a very long way to loosening and removing pathogens too - it's not just the temperature that does the work, the very act of washing crap away (like when hand-washing dishes) is all part of the process.

Kellybonita · 21/04/2025 19:56

I won't even share cutlery or a cup with my brother and parents.

I keep my own cutlery and separate cup.

My brother is not very hygienic!

There was a woman on How Clean is Your House? who put all sorts of horse paraphernalia into her her dishwasher...Kim Woodburn looked like she was going to have heart failure when she saw it.

Let’s put hygiene aside, because everyone understands that a hot wash at 90°C will kill any germs.

I question the ethics of doing such a thing. I personally do not think it is right and would never have thought that it was a thing people do.
Wow, you learn something everyday!

I love my dog and he loves his food and is well fed. My dog is also greedy and an open dishwasher in the process of being loaded is beyond temptation for him. But I tell him firmly ‘leave it’ and off he goes and sits watching me load the dishwasher, longingly. Poor boy! But it’s not going to happen in my house and my dog is none the worse for it.

A hot wash at 90 doesn't kill any germs though, that's just not true. And domestic dishwashers don't run at 90 anyway.

Psychologymam · 21/04/2025 18:26

but why wouldn’t you just scrape the food into the dogs bowl? It’s fine if you’re happy to share with your dog, but lots of people aren’t! Honestly, I’m relatively relaxed and it would make me never eat in that house again. I wouldn’t be rude or say anything, but I’d definitely have dinner before visiting next time 🤣🤣
It’s like wet dog smell or cigarette smoke, if you do it yourself you don’t notice and think what’s the issue, but it’s horrible if it’s not yours!!

I do this, as onions, stuffing & other things not good for dogs.

I maintain that there is no problem with allowing my dog to lick the dishes from residual gravy etc & then putting them in the dishwasher on a high temp.

My mistake was allowing Step Grandchildren who don't normally stay with us (as live abroad & have maids who pack dishwasher etc & rather a new experience for them) were accompanying step GC who often stay & regard packing the dishwasher as their contribution to the meal. It was the GC who normally spend time with us who said 'Oh - <dog name> usually licks the dishes before Granny puts them in the dishwasher', Scraped the residue into the food caddy (to be collected & composted) & put the plates down for the dog to lick That's what they do at my house as well at home-they have a dog & a mother who's a senior nurse in the local hospital.

But DIL blew her top.

I make no apologies - my GC are very healthy & I maintain that my dishes are totally safe for them to eat from. There is a lot of evidence that children brought up in a house with pets are less likely to develop allergies.

If you are talking about 90F then I agree.

If you are talking about 90C then we're all doomed.

And the majority on here maintain that's it's gross and you shouldn't do it in front of visitors!

Smallmercies · 21/04/2025 21:12

... not to mention it's teaching your grandchildren to live in squalor. Blecchh.

Smallmercies · 21/04/2025 21:13

"Granny always [insert gross practice]" is not the endorsement you seem to think it is!
