Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Happyspendingthedayinthegarden · 21/04/2025 15:11

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

I'm a life long dog owner and I am sorry, but I think this is grim. Anything that my animals eat or drink from is kept seperate from human utensils, I never feed from my plate or my table or even have the dogs in the room when I eat as I hate them begging. Treat food, such as left over chicken and gravy, is scraped into their bowls - I am with your DIL on this.

I’m curious. How do you wash your animal dishes then? Do you hand wash them separately? Just curious no jusgement. I find this thread fascinating 😂
I have a dog and let her eat leftovers from my plate. I don’t even have a dishwasher. But before I had her the thought would have made me sick.

Yes when I had a dog, I handwashed her bowls separately.

So DIL actively encouraged your dog to lick her children's faces, then had a strop when the same dog licked some used plates ? I could understand if she objected to both, but not one of them, weird !

Share as in if I'm eating something and I know the dogs like it I'll share by giving them a spoon or fork full. Usually something I can't use my fingers for like ice cream or something in gravy.

Gross!
What is wrong with some dog owners.

Dog lover and owner here. If you can't see what is so wrong about anyone or anything licking plates there is no hope. As an owner you must know what your dog licks [bum, bollocks etc]

Do you not lick your partner's bollocks? (Or vagina if you're a lesbian).
At least the dog licks his own.

I wash my dogs bowls by hand every morning. With my rubber gloves on. I don‘t put them in the dishwasher. They don’t need to go in the dishwasher.

Do you use a separate disposable cloth?

I do this too.

Yes of course!

Cloths are cheap.

A lot of women on here are single for a start.

@XenoBitch The colonoscopes are washed by the endoscopy tech or other endoscopy staff using a special sponge that has cleansers made for cleaning the scope. There are special attachments that are then placed on it and it’s placed into a special washing machine. The attachments are connected to lines that run a Glutaraldehyde solution through the scope to clean and disinfect the inside of the scope when the machine is running. It also cleans the outside of the scope and rinses it. Sometime an alcohol solution is used as a final rinse. There are special test strips that can be used to test if the colonoscope has any biological matter or residue. If anything is detected it is re-cleaned the same as above and tested again. I don’t think a normal dishwasher does the same for dog licked plates. 🤣

If any endoscopy suite has been decontaminating endoscopes like this any time in the last 25 years the CQC will want to know about it.

And the dog licks the bum of any other dog that he encounters.

Dishwasher water isn't hot enough... are you sure that water is 90c and not 90 degrees?

'We let our dogs lick plates, bowls, saucepans, meat trays casserole dishes the lot, then they go in dish washer, my dogs my house my rules snyone that doesn't like it don't come, I don't want you here. Its that simple'

Yes and that is fine but do tell any potential guests that you have such poor hygiene standards so that they are aware and won't eat or drink at your house.

I think most of us ask our guests if the have any food allergies/likes/dislikes.

I think it might be polite to let them know about the doggie ‘pre wash’ as well. They could then decide if they might want to make other plans!

I have a dog and she has never licked another dog's bum. They have a sniff. They don't lick.

Why are the more vocal dog haters on MN obsessed with their assholes?

Kellybonita · 21/04/2025 19:14

I do think that some dog owners can be a bit nuts.

I was watching an instagram page. It's called second date update. It's this radio show in the USA. If people had a first date, but then never hear from the person again, they can email the show and get them to call the person and ask why.

On this one call, the guy said he didn't want to see the woman again because she was so weird with her dog. The woman was weird.

The woman got on the phone and said "but that's my child!" And she said " you're over reacting , non dog owners don't understand "

LadyNairne · 21/04/2025 19:17

Some dogs eat shit.

I don’t want particles of excrement going on my plate and circling around my dishwasher. I don’t want my plates and pans being washed in poo water even if it is very hot pooey water!

if you saw a restaurant allowing dogs to lick the plates and pans clean would you eat there again? No as they’d be shut down! Same thing at home. Gross gross gross.

How do the two differ?

My mum takes her dog to a place where they have a dog menu. He eats off the same plates people do.

The place still has a 5 star hygiene rating.

Licking the spoon that your dog had licked - now that is gross.😖

I put it on at a high temp because dog has pre-washed the items, As is usually just the 2 of us & we only do dishwashing about twice maybe 3 times a week.

So the dog-licked dishes don’t even get washed immediately but sit in the dishwasher for a bit?! 😕
I do find it all a bit grim, but I also think your DIL overreacted in storming off

Fabulousagain · 21/04/2025 19:20

Americans often drop F (fahrenheit) and just say X degrees.

It has to be remembered / understood that bacteria etc. don't move far of their own accord, they need help. So arguably a plate left standing in a dishwasher which is eventually cleaned when the sealed door is closed, by washing violently at high temperatures in a sealed space is preferable to doing it by hand right away and moving the pathogens around the kitchen surfaces.

But ultimately, if there's one thing we can all be sure of, it's that not one person posting on this thread has actually died, no matter what their domestic choices are.

Well that makes some sense now.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstated · 21/04/2025 19:24

If I was at someone's house and they did this, I'd think that was incredibly grim and wouldn't want to eat there ever again either.
However, I am extremely hypocritical because my little cat loves custard so I always let her lick the bowl out.....🤦
Your mistake was doing it in front of guests!
