Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

'We let our dogs lick plates, bowls, saucepans, meat trays casserole dishes the lot, then they go in dish washer, my dogs my house my rules snyone that doesn't like it don't come, I don't want you here. Its that simple'

Yes and that is fine but do tell any potential guests that you have such poor hygiene standards so that they are aware and won't eat or drink at your house.

But the plates are going to be washed at a very high temperature. There really are some pathetic posters here

but why wouldn’t you just scrape the food into the dogs bowl? It’s fine if you’re happy to share with your dog, but lots of people aren’t! Honestly, I’m relatively relaxed and it would make me never eat in that house again. I wouldn’t be rude or say anything, but I’d definitely have dinner before visiting next time 🤣🤣
It’s like wet dog smell or cigarette smoke, if you do it yourself you don’t notice and think what’s the issue, but it’s horrible if it’s not yours!!

My MIL was amazed when I said I'd left chicken out to defrost on the side as I had three cats at the time. She was sure they'd go for it. Never did. I have had six cats and none jumped up on sides. The only one I wouldn't have risked leaving food out was our Siamese ex-stray because she'd developed some odd habits from her life on the streets (such as an obsession with eating black plastic bin bags) and Siamese are notoriously naughty.

Chocolateeggsandsugaredalmonds · 21/04/2025 18:29

I have dogs and love dogs, but I’m not eating out of their bowls and they are definitely not licking mine. It is gross. Are all you people saying it’s fine the same people who apparently also wash their toilet brushes in the dish washer? After all, the high temperature will kill all the germs…yuck…

No, toddlers are even worse. they touch their bums and bits, then touch everything in shops.

Kids are more gross.

So true! I’d happily let my dogs lick our plates before they went in the dishwasher, but would never eat anything a toddler made at nursery 😂

Mirren22 · 21/04/2025 18:30

Really gross. Even if it it fine germ wise, it’s just a really off putting thought that you’ve eaten off a plate that’s been gobbled over by your dog. Fine to do it in privacy but YABU to do so in front of guests

I might have to try that we have a pet cam. Only on when away from the house with sitters.

Though I’m eye balling the fattest cat and I’m not sure he could be arsed to jump up that high for a chicken these days. Maybe a lamb.

Share? As in use in conjunction with the dog at the same time, as one spoonful for you, next one for dog and so on
Or share? As in you have same utensils but not at same time

Share as in if I'm eating something and I know the dogs like it I'll share by giving them a spoon or fork full. Usually something I can't use my fingers for like ice cream or something in gravy.

LazyArsedMagician · 21/04/2025 18:33

Logically, I know that the dishwasher would wash it all off.

However, I'd be unhappy with it too, it seems really nasty to me. I wouldn't be having a dog licking my face ever though, so it seems a bit of an overreaction from DIL.

None of my many cats ever jumped on work tops or any surfaces. Not normal for any cats to wee on things left out. I'd have the same reaction to cats rather than dogs licking plates. Not sure why one would be worse than the other?

Just my observations from other people's houses that have cats. The hairs in the food is a tell of a lick perhaps. Or worse. I suppose at least with a dog you would know.

Your cats are bound to have a snoop about when your back is turned but probably haven't told you.

aCatCalledFawkes · 21/04/2025 18:34

I wouldn't like this no. I have two cats, if I was going to give them leftovers I would put the scapes in to there normal wet food bowel and they would be fed on the floor like they always are, I would do the same for a dog. I really dislike the line crossing with dogs or cats eating off our plates regardless of the dishwasher.

UpsideDownChairs · 21/04/2025 18:19

Yeah - if I'm in the room they won't as that's a firm rule with me, but I'm under no illusion that they're following the rules when I'm not there.

And I always make my bed, as I don't want cat (or particularly cats bum) on my pillow.

I'm realistic - the cats live in the house, the children live in the house, various creep-crawlies, there's chickens and all sorts outside - so the best I can do is good enough.

Yes agreed re bottoms on the pillow. No one likes getting pink-eye.

Aworldofmyown · 21/04/2025 18:37

Rationally I know that because they are going in the dishwasher, it's fine.

BUT. Yuk!!! I'm not sure i could eat at yours.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 21/04/2025 18:37

Netcam · 21/04/2025 15:38

I think it's a bit gross and wouldn't be happy if someone did that at my house. But I don't run the dishwasher at 90, seems a terrible waste of energy.

However, there are all sorts. Yesterday I watched someone eating food from a bowl with a spoon, then put a spoonful into their dog's mouth, then dipped that same spoon into the food and continued to eat it themselves. DH, who is a big dog lover, noticed and even he thought it was disgusting.

Edited

Mee! I do that.

Kellybonita · 21/04/2025 18:37

You should at the very least, let people know BEFORE they eat off the plate.

Not after they've already eaten off the plate.

LadyButtonofButtonHouse · 21/04/2025 18:38

I let my dogs like the stuff as I'm loading the dishwasher, they have a lick as its being stacked, I don't hold the plates out for them

We call it the "pre-wash" 🤣

Dishwasher is hot enough to kill any germs. Even if some remain, some germs are good for you!

To add though, my parents are the only ones who eat at our house and they let their dog do the same at theirs, so not really anyone else to offend

steff13 · 21/04/2025 18:41

She also questioned that I had bed linen on a washing line - doesn't that encourage allergies? Umm - no it makes the bed smell lovely & fresh.

I'm allergic to pollen. My son's car is parked in the driveway, currently covered in pollen. I don't believe that my laundry is impervious to being covered in pollen.

Icanttakethisanymore · 21/04/2025 18:42

Hmmm - I’m not at all high maintenance when it comes to food hygiene but something about his would make my stomach turn. However, I’d rationalise it out and not make a fuss. DIL sounds pretty unreasonable in her reaction though.

While still disgusting, it's less bad that your parents know it happens and are okay with it.

The dil in this case had no idea it happened, until after her and her children had eaten off the plates.

Charlize43 · 21/04/2025 18:45

Vile. I wouldn't eat out of a plate that a dog has licked.

TrixieFatell · 21/04/2025 18:48

It's gross. However I am mindful I do have an ocd around germs and am the person who washes their pets bowls separately, with their own sponge and then bleach and disinfect the sink afterwards. I couldn't eat from a plate a dog had licked no matter how much they had cleaned it because I'd have that image in my head.
