Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Happyspendingthedayinthegarden · 21/04/2025 15:11

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

It might kill the germs, but it won’t stop me thinking of a dogs slurpy tongue on my plate everytime I ate at your house. YABU!

Motheroffive999 · 21/04/2025 18:03

I love dogs .
I just don't think I would let guests see that because they may wonder what else you do that is a bit gross.
Maybe it's ok.if it is your own plate and nobody sees it happening.
Like a dog giving you a pre wash before a shower 😉 🚿

Poor dogs.

BreadInCaptivity · 21/04/2025 18:04

Technically I know I high temp dishwasher cycle will clean the plates, but I just couldn’t stomach the thought of dog lick having been in them.

It might not be wholly rational, but I’m sorry, I wouldn’t eat at your house either 😳

blobby10 · 21/04/2025 18:04

I often allow my dog to lick the plates clean before I was them by hand - hot water, plenty of Fairy liquid and a scourer before rinsing with hot water. Don't have a dishwasher.

But the thread isn’t about what bothers the individual, thread is about what others eg guests can or cannot tolerate
It not relevant what bothers you as you’ve not indicated that you have doggy plate licking as a spectator sport

Point taken. I can see how it could put others off. I only have my immediate family round for meals. I tend to meet friends at cafes and restaurants.

ThatWildMintSloth · 21/04/2025 18:07

This is exactly why "You can't eat from everybody"
Makes me feel sick just thinking about it🤢

Shock

You don't cook for guests ever I'm hoping, just you in the house?

Sugargliderwombat · 21/04/2025 18:01

Do they also shit on the plates but it's no problem because the dishwasher will clean it off?

It's disgusting.

This.

Standards fgs. I have a dog, they have their own pots to eat and drink from. They don't use ours, we don't use theirs.

IncessantNameChanger · 21/04/2025 18:10

Come on, as a mum and a dog owner none of my four kids have ever eaten dog or fox shit off the street. My dog has. Fox shit, horse shit, spiders, slugs, vomit. If she could chew it she'd eat it. She would eat diarrhea if she could, vomit it up then eat her own vomit. On loop.

How would you feel if a person ate some wild animals turd, didn't brush their teeth then licked your belongings? Why do people on MN presume kids do things like this? You was a child once. Did you honestly eat shit? Some dogs do. Some don't. But no child does this.

It's up to you OP but hide it. My cousins dog licked his balls then he would be licking my cousins face. His choice. My choice to be silently disgusted. My dog was never encouraged to lick my face. Because we're all different.

I was rather shocked at USA living DIL's reaction TBH

To be fair, I guess she was probably shocked at you letting your dogs eat from your plates.

I've heard about this too, that drying outdoors can trap pollen etc. Talk about doomed if you do, doomed if you don't...I hope the vast majority of things like that blows off my laundry again before I bring it in, because I love drying outdoors.

I do too.

But my friends son had extremely bad eczema as a child and she was advised to tumble dry bedding at certain times of the year, or when he was having a bad flare. I hadn't heard this before that, but it makes sense.

Generally though, if you line dry in many parts of the US it's looked down on as it implies you are too poor to afford a tumble drier - or choose to spend your money on other things (alcohol etc). "Trailer trash" was the rather derogatory term used.

Plus many parts of the US get too hot to line dry. The clothes are baked within an hour, no good if you are at work, you can't bring them in, and that ruins clothes very quickly, and fades them.

My brother used to eat slugs. Would properly chew on them and show us his mouth contents.

We put our cat’s plates and bowls in the dishwasher. Is everyone else handwashing?? Who could be bothered. (We’re rarely ill)

'Fraid I am. The cats are fed in the utility room and their bowls are washed every day in the sink in there. There's very rarely room left in our dishwasher for their bowls. Once in a while I throw them in the dishwasher for a bit of a steralise

Imisscoffee2021 · 21/04/2025 17:21

Would you use a tea towel again after cleaning a dogs bum with it if washed on 90 degrees? Dogs lick their actual arseholes, this is very grim. I know that yes most likely no bacteria would survive at 90 degrees, but it's just so gross that if I witnessed it as your dil did I'd probably not want to eat at your home again, though I'd have shuddered and held my tongue at the time for the sake if family peace.

Do you have dogs? Their arseholes are everywhere they are. And they walk on annd eat shit. And then lick faces.

I’ve cleaned up vomit and blood with towels and washed them and reused them. What do you do? Throw them away? I wash underpants and guess what? They come out clean. I actually don’t wipe my dogs butts but plenty of things with poop on them have ended up in the washing machine over the many years with 3 dc and many many dogs.

That made me giggle. In the UK we very much dry on lines outdoors, but what you've said about dryers in the US would explain why I've seen so many videos on facebook where people in the US state that we in the UK rarely have tumble dryers. Just about everyone I know has a tumble dryer.

Oh Lord that’s awful 😂. There was a very unfortunate young man in Australia who ate a slug as a dare and ended up with brain damage. It was so so sad. Some microbe or thing some slugs carry

Tryingtokeepgoing · 21/04/2025 18:18

Given that dogs, rightly, aren’t allowed in commercial kitchens I think it’s reasonable for guests to find animals eating off plates intended for people disgusting. Perhaps you should stick a zero star hygiene rating sticker in your kitchen window to warn your guests 😂

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 21/04/2025 18:18

No, I wouldn't like it particularly, but that's probably hypocritical of me as I've let my cats lick plates and we don't even have a dishwasher so the plates are only washed in hand hot water. But they're my cats so it doesn't feel as gross I suppose.

OTOH I bet her ( @XenoBitch) brother is now immune to that particular microbe, having given his immune system exposure to it!

I thought cats hop about on work tops and wee on anything left out. So cats are usually worse presumably.

Yeah - if I'm in the room they won't as that's a firm rule with me, but I'm under no illusion that they're following the rules when I'm not there.

And I always make my bed, as I don't want cat (or particularly cats bum) on my pillow.

I'm realistic - the cats live in the house, the children live in the house, various creep-crawlies, there's chickens and all sorts outside - so the best I can do is good enough.

If I knew someone who did this i would never visit their home or eat anything they had made. The thought of dog slobber over stuff grosses me out. I know rationally that the dishwasher on high heat would remove it. But it would make me question approaches to other hygiene things. I wouldn’t necessarily believe it would make me ill-i just find it gross and weird. But its entirely up to them how they run their home and how they like things. But i wouldnt eat there.

Or it suggests the person actually understands cleaning and bacteria and knows the plates will be clean. The number of homes I’ve been in that have no idea about hygiene. They wash their raw chicken in the sink. They wipe surfaces with a cloth then hang it straightaway on the burnside of sink without thoroughly washing and rinsing it. They don’t rinse the soapy water off hand washed dishes. They wear shoes in the house. They cough into their hands. They don’t lower the toilet lid when flushing they drag a manky mop around the floor and think they are cleaning it.

bet these are the people who think dogs licking a plate pre dishwasher is dirty.
