Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

None of my many cats ever jumped on work tops or any surfaces. Not normal for any cats to wee on things left out. I'd have the same reaction to cats rather than dogs licking plates. Not sure why one would be worse than the other?

Oh I dunno...I used to work in a house that was overrun with cats, and one used to jump on the counter at one end, walk along, spray over the toaster and some cups hanging off a wall cupboard above, then jump off the other end. I've never been overly fussy about how clean a cup was before I used it (as in, if it looks clean I'll chance it), but never in that house would I accept a drink.

I thought cats hop about on work tops and wee on anything left out. So cats are usually worse presumably.

Isn’t that rats. Rats wee on everything.

Never seen my cat wee anywhere other than its litter tray.

Mothership4two · 21/04/2025 17:47

@IridiumSky

Of course.
Presumably, after each time he’s done all that, you suggest he washes it first?
😀

Naturally, on a 70°C intensive wash cycle 😂

Ah that explains it more. That was a tom marking his territory in an overran house. Sad and gross.

I let my dog lick my face so I really can’t talk 🤣

Mothership4two · 21/04/2025 17:49

Well that house must of stunk @Bonniethetiler

Well that house must of stunk @Bonniethetiler

It used to greet visitors at the front door. "Stunk" would be a compliment.

She sounds v OTT about made-up hygiene issues (why would sheets on a line cause allergies?! Changing your bed linen every day – insanity!).

Are you sure you didn’t do the dog-plate licking thing in front of her on purpose? Wink You must have known she’d freak out!

If you are very allergic to external triggers (particular pollen at certain times of the year), then you are better to dry your bedding and clothes away from a potential pollen source. Sometimes even micro bits blowing in the wind then being blown on to a pillow case or a sheet can cause bad flare ups. Not common, but it can be a problem for the unlucky few.

I've heard about this too, that drying outdoors can trap pollen etc. Talk about doomed if you do, doomed if you don't...I hope the vast majority of things like that blows off my laundry again before I bring it in, because I love drying outdoors.

I think that's gross. Pet dishes are for pets. But logically speaking they get thoroughly washed in a dishwasher but I still wouldn't like it at all.

why does 'usa living' have anything to do with it?
there are enough (presumably majority british) people on this thread, saying it's rank.
the 'well it's been cleaned' argument doesn't work
would you eat your dinner out of a toilet if someone assured you it had been thoroughly sterilised?
would you be happy to wear someone else's period pants, after all, they've been through the wash at a high temperature?

Plenty of people buy used swimwear on Vinted - which includes bikini bottoms.

Daftypants · 21/04/2025 17:55

I don’t give my dog human plates to lick , if I felt he could eat some leftovers I’d save them for his next meal in a Tupperware or if there wasn’t much I’d scrape it into his dog dish .
However , he tries and sometimes succeeds getting into the dishwasher to lick the dirty plates if I’m distracted .
So ?? It is yucky but of course the very high temperatures and the dishwasher detergent would kill anything

IridiumSky · 21/04/2025 17:16

Good point.

The correct procedure is to ensure separation from the knives and forks. As in the Miele dishwasher manual - precisely lined-up knives, forks and spoons, all separate, and orderly. One’s dirty knickers go at the back, in the section provided. You really should read the manual.

this exactly....and NEVER the silk ones with the rhinestones on

consistentlyinconsistent · 21/04/2025 17:56

This has put me off my dinner.. and it takes a lot to put me off food. For context, last night I ate dinner while watching a graphic television programme about surgeries.....

RanchRat · 21/04/2025 17:56

I have always let my dogs clean the plates. I am a bit careful who sees me do it these days after catching an appauled look on the face of one of my DC's dates.

Princessbubbles · 21/04/2025 17:56

I do the same. Have had dogs all my life and doesn’t bother me one bit. It all goes in the dishwasher. I’m more likely to catch something from pushing a shopping trolley. But that doesn’t bother me either

Iwrotethelyricstoaxlf · 21/04/2025 17:57

My dog is the pre clean.

it’s all washed at a temp
that doesn’t let any lurgi live

juicelooseabootthishoose · 21/04/2025 17:58

If I knew someone who did this i would never visit their home or eat anything they had made. The thought of dog slobber over stuff grosses me out. I know rationally that the dishwasher on high heat would remove it. But it would make me question approaches to other hygiene things. I wouldn’t necessarily believe it would make me ill-i just find it gross and weird. But its entirely up to them how they run their home and how they like things. But i wouldnt eat there.

Smallmercies · 21/04/2025 17:59

Right, I'm just flipping the pancakes with the dog poo spatula - it's been through the dishwasher. Who wants the first pancake?

But the thread isn’t about what bothers the individual, thread is about what others eg guests can or cannot tolerate
It not relevant what bothers you as you’ve not indicated that you have doggy plate licking as a spectator sport

ItsUpToYou · 21/04/2025 18:00

This is why you can’t just eat from anyone’s houses…

Backs away offering ip
pancakes to others more deserving. 🫣

Sugargliderwombat · 21/04/2025 18:01

Do they also shit on the plates but it's no problem because the dishwasher will clean it off?

It's disgusting.
