I've already said he had difficulty speaking but the older generation have a sense of duty that doesn't always resonate with the rest of us. The Queen met Liz Truss two days before her death from cancer and she looked very frail. Was she also forced to do this by aides for the photo op? Not a chance.

Eternal rest grant to him O Lord.

Let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.

Very sad but also amazing that he made it to 88 and through one more Easter Sunday. He must have been holding on for that to die the morning after.

He was a great Pope. I didn't pay attention to the last 2 conclaves but I shall follow the next with great interest.

Well said.

Came across as a very humble, compassionate man.

May he rest in peace now after all his health struggles.

I recently read the book "The Two Popes" by Anthony Mc Carten about Francis and Benedict. I have to say as a non practising Catholic it was a great and very interesting read. A biography of both with all the background and Vatican stuff, including the conclaves.

One thing - I really hope that memes don't surface to say that meeting JDV was the death of him. Sorry, but it was one of the first things to cross my mind.

I saw the film version a few weeks ago. Pope Francis (played by Jonathan Pryce in the film) seemed like a good man. I’m sorry to hear that he has died.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 21/04/2025 14:16

A genuinely charismatic Pope unlike his predecessor Ratzinger. He was a priest for years in a poor area in Argentina and knew how to connect with people. It's going to be a tough act to follow.

Sad for Catholics I guess. Have to say that as an atheist I've already heard enough Pope/Catholic news today to last me a lifetime.

I’m also an atheist and find your post a bit harsh, nobody forced you to click on to this thread.

pinkingshears · 21/04/2025 14:33

If we have to have a Papacy, then another Pope like Francis is the way to go.
He seemed a genuinely humble man who broke many previous Papl 'barriers' and had the 'common touch'. He stood up to world leaders and constantly remembered migrants and the oppressed. RIP Francis. You did a good job.

CheshireCat1 · 21/04/2025 14:34

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

i found that cruel and shocking, doutless people will say that was what he wanted but kitting him out in all that regalia and putting him on the balcony seemed dreadful to me. I am not religious and I thought it was horrible

Honestly? I think appearing in public when he was dying was probably part of the job of the pope. It’s a role where you keep going until the very end.

I remember JPII dying and being quite taken aback when his body was carried around before his funeral. It will be the same for this pope.

Pickledpeanuts · 21/04/2025 14:46

He looked so unwell yesterday, though it's no surprise he insisted on appearing in public.

It's not at all likely, but hopefully the next Pope is even more progressive.

lol what is the bums rush?! I love this even I though I don’t know what it means 🤣

It's a polite way of saying that you basically told someone to fuck off.
My dear departed mother used to say it all the time.
"I gave him the bums rush". I would say "I told him to get to fuck and then fuck off some more" or similar

I'm Catholic too and think that "woke" is a horrible scathing term.
Do you mean you'd rather he was more judgemental? Would rather he was more hell fire and damnation? rather than peace, love and forgiveness? Just say that then.

We’ll probably never know, doubt they will come back to explain 🤷‍♀️

that is my response and as I said I am not religous. I don't dispute that people of faith and those who know more than I do about the Catholic church will see things from a different perspective.

GinGanGoooooolie · 21/04/2025 15:35

No one would have ‘forced’ Pope Francis to be there yesterday, it would have been important to him to be present on the most important day in the Christian calendar, he would have felt a deep responsibility to be there.

So stay away from the news then
Im no royalist so stayed away from the BBC when the Queen died .

What a great idea, I'll just ignore all other domestic and international news in case any news reports mention Il Papa.

You can just choose not to click on the link or article? I don't enjoy football, so whilst I won't ignore all news, I also won't deliberately access articles and threads about the topic.

mnahmnah · 21/04/2025 09:25

He was a good Pope.

I worry now who the next will be though. Francis’ more liberal ideas upset many within the church so I fear they may go with someone more conservative like Benedict again and take the church backwards.

Yes. My mum was just saying that. And she’s a very devout 82 year old. She was delighted he gave out to Vance as well.

TheSillyCrab · 21/04/2025 16:04

DurhamDurham · 21/04/2025 09:06

When I saw him on the news yesterday I said it was a shame that he’s being wheeled out when he’s clearly not at all well. But maybe he knew his time for short and wanted to come out one last time. Hope he rests in peace, imagine one of the last people you saw was JD Vance.

My thoughts exactly about Vance being one of the last "people" he saw.

Maybe just don’t waste your time expressing your lack of interest online to people who couldn’t care less what you think?

AutumnLeaves24 · 21/04/2025 16:08

Annoyeddd · 21/04/2025 09:13

He may have wanted to do this - no one could force him. Met our king, gave JD vance the bums rush and spoke to the devout.
Then went to bed and slipped away.

When you put it like that, it's probably not too far off the way he would've chosen to go.

I can't believe he's been pope for 12 years, it really doesn't seem that long ago.

RIP x

He was the Pope. He will have chosen to be with the faithful on the most important day of the year - it was his last gift to them. He was doing his duty to them and to God.
